Launch Windows programs remotely with Application Access Server

It's no secret that I'm a big TeamViewer fan. However, there are some chores that just don't require launching a full-featured remote control program - like restarting our point-of-sale system's Btrieve engine.

Application Access Server provides a lightweight alternative. Once you've got it installed and configured, you can issue commands to a remote machine by connecting to it using any web browser. AAS has built-in support for DynDns.org for automatic IP updating and DDNS access, so all you've got to do is choose a port for the server and forward access from your router (if necessary).

Adding launchable applications is done via the configuration menu, and it's a simple procedure. You can also configure multiple users and select which accounts have access to specific applications. Apps can be launched in three modes - normal, silent, and stealth - depending on how discreet you need to be. AAS is fairly light weight, using about 8Mb of memory when running.

It's a handy application to add to your Windows remote administration toolkit.

Portable WSCC simplifies access to SysInternals, Nirsoft utilities

SysInternals and Nirsoft make a lot of really, really useful applications, but they're all standalone. Keeping them organized for easy access can get to be a bit of a pain, and that's when Windows System Control Center comes to the rescue.

WSCC is a free, portable application designed to centralize and simplify access to these utilities. Think of it as the Swiss Army shell for your "knife blades."

Launch the program and enter the location for your apps. Relative paths are supported, so don't forget to adjust the directories accordingly if you plan on running it from your flash drive. On my drive, I created a WSCC folder in the root placed the other applications in two subfolders (NS and SI). I find it helpful to check the "hide missing items" box since I don't use every app WSCC supports.

The group buttons on the left side of the main program window make finding specific utilties fast and easy. At the top of the window, there's a search box - which is also a great help in quickly locating an app.

Keep in mind, the download is only the WSCC - you'll need to fetch the actual programs from Nirsoft and SysInternals yourself. Save some time, and grab the SI apps in a single file and Nir's from the Web Panel.

It's free for both private and commercial us, and should be a welcome addition to any Window's admin's flash drive.

A Fistful Of Password Busting Tools for Your Travels

Not all booty is as easy to find as digging where the X marks the spot. Sometimes a pirate's got to kick a few doors open to get at the goods! Here are a handful of programs to help you gain access whilst pillaging!

If it's Windows you're after, don't forget about trying the easy way first. Reboot, hold F8 down, and boot to safe mode. Log in as Administrator with a blank password. It works on a scary number of systems, and you'll be able to clear or change any other password on the system.

Don't get too paranoid, Windows users. Removing passwords on other systems really isn't all that hard either.

Now, on to the tools!

phpMyAdmin 2.9.0.2 is available

phpMyAdmin phpMyAdmin is one of the best and most heavily used (at least on my desk) MySQL management tools. It makes everything you do in MySQL simple, and can be either desktop or web-based. Even LAMP installs have a portable, USB drive friendly version, which is one of my favorites. Sure, I love SQLyog, MySQL Administrator and other desktop based clients too, but none is as versatile and useful as phpMyAdmin. 2.9.0.2 is a setup script distribution that addresses issue in 2.9.0.1, so nothing majorly new here, but you can download it, so we are all over it. Security fixes and bug fixes are good things.

Ten tools for every admin

USB
keyOkay, we've seen plenty of lists of apps for every user, or every Windows user, or every Mac user. But what about the sysadmins? This list of 10 tools for every admin is a good start, if very Windows-centric. The list is a bit different than it might have been a few years ago, with now-essential tools like a virtual CD app, VMWare or Virtual PC, a USB key, and even an RSS reader making the cut. Okay, admins, what tools did the author miss that you couldn't live without?

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
