phpMyID: roll your own OpenID provider

With more and more web sites and services offering OpenID for authentication, you may want to use your own domain name as an OpenID provider instead of selecting from the wide array of other providers (like Blogger, AOL, Wordpress.com).

phpMyID is a pair of PHP files that allow you to easily use your domain name for authentication to OpenID-supporting sites like Sourceforge, Skitch, and Technorati.

To use phpMyID (substitute "yourwebsite" with your domain name or website address):

Gmail adding log-in monitoring features

Have you ever asked yourself, "Is someone else using my email account?" Well, if you're the cautious type, Google just added a few log-in monitoring features to its email service, so such ~~paranoid~~ questions won't feel so pressing anymore.

Wondering if you're Gmail account is open in multiple locations? Just look at the very, very bottom of the main Gmail page. It'll say something to the sound of: "This account is open in one other location." Click on the "details" link next to it to get taken to, well, a details page.

It'll give you the deets on the most recent sessions including the access type and IP address. It's not the end-all for email hijacking, but at the very least it'll help you point-out intruders. And if you don't see the feature yet, sit tight, Google is slowly rolling out the feature to all accounts.

DLS Tip: Use a new Yahoo! account for Flickr

Whether you made the switch to using your Yahoo! ID on Flickr ages ago, or you simply stepped into rank with the rest of us on March 15th, you might find yourself at one point or another wishing you could change which Yahoo! ID you have tied to Flickr. You could beg Flickr support for some help, check out the forums to see if you aren't the only indecisive person to pull this stunt, or you could simply visit the recently redesigned account management section. We aren't sure how long it's been there, but a new pref section titled 'Your Yahoo! Account' offers a really simple process for changing the account you log into Flickr with. Easy breezy, and no waiting for customer service.

Create a Useless Account

With every site out there requiring you to create an account and log in, why not jump in and create a Useless Account? This great new web service allows users to create an account with unlimited account editing that can be updated anytime, with the ability to change your password 1,000 times a day for free. Of course, this is a joke put on by the team at Brisbane Creative to get a laugh over the number of Web 2.0 companies out there whose services we sign up to test out every day, never to visit again. Good show! Create one now to get the username of your choice before its gone, there are over 1,800 accounts already!

Google merges Writely and Spreadsheets

Google has merged Writely, now known as Docs, and Spreadsheets together to form one super online office application. Ok, so it's not super yet, and it still does have some catching up to do with Zoho Office, but it's on the way.

Google Account users now have the benefit of creating, and storing documents and spreadsheets together in the new Docs and Spreadsheets service. Google has listened to users suggestions, and made this into a combined list, that works with the same ideas as Gmail with stars, tags, and searches. Sharing documents and spreadsheets is a breeze, simply choose the individuals you would like to collaborate with, and invite them to view. Google has added another feature here, which allows collaborators the ability to share your spreadsheets.

It looks like a hit so far. One easy convenient location to store all online documents, all under a Google Account ID. The real virtual office is on the way, even though this has not been rolled out for Google Apps for domains....the users that could really benefit from this service. Writely now features Google Account sign-in goodness

Writely has finally done the deed and fulfilled their acquisition destiny by opening their doors for users to sign in using their Google Accounts. They even published a succinct, though somewhat goofy, Help Center Q&A on this new ability, clarifying that not all Google Accounts are Gmail accounts, but all Gmail accounts are, in fact, Google Accounts; they must've been getting pounded with questions from Gmail users who aren't quite hip to the Google Account universe, or something.

At any rate, there don't seem to be any other revolutionary changes; Writely's design and UI hasn't been Googleized (and some might thank them for that), but who knows - this could easily be one more step in the direction of a Google Office suite.

Leave a message on your Backpack with voiceNote

Ever wish you could call your Backpack account and leave a voicemail? Me neither, but now that someone thought of the idea and cranked out voiceNote for Backpack (beta, of course) - I can't wait to start dialing! To sign up, you simply have to enter your name, email, Backpack URL, the email address of the Backpack page you want these voice messages sent to and up to three phone numbers from which you'll be calling. You then simply dial a specific number to make your call and leave your message. celltell, this service's provider, lists about 7 U.S. numbers in major cities you can call to use this service, but I would imagine that if you have long distance dialing, it shouldn't be a problem no matter where you are in the country. The voiceNotes are added to your specified Backpack page "a few minutes" after your call as small Flash players, complete with export-ability to an MP3 file.

This looks like a fantastic (and unexpected) addition to an already stellar online PIM. If you try it out, feel free to let us know what you think in the comments.
