Over the past few weeks DLS has had the chance to check out Yahoo's GO 2.0 application for mobile devices at home and on the go with a Blackberry 8800 and a Nokia 6126. So how did the application fare out? Is it worth having on your device? What were the benefits and downfalls? And what would we change?

We have covered Yahoo's GO mobile application since it first was released in Beta to the public at the beginning of the year. We initially tried the mobile application out on a Motorola RAZR and Blackberry 8700 among other devices, and agreed that Yahoo had developed something rather special. However, it wasn't until we tried it out long term in our everyday lives that we really understood the benefits to the application.

Yahoo GO was developed by Yahoo for users to instantly search and connect to email, news, weather, stocks, finance, and Flickr, all through an intuitive interface Yahoo has named a carousal. After tooling around with the initial Beta release, Yahoo has released yet another version that reduces load times, and adds in some new tools like a calendar and address book to help in day to day time management. However a big integration has to be Yahoo GO's ability to use GPS on select devices, perfect for when on the go, and what makes this application stand out.

New and improved, and ready to download today! Get ready to get your mobile application on because Yahoo just launched a new version of Go that brings users faster speeds, calendar and address books, better email, and more powerful maps.

Yahoo Go 2.0 has reduced data loading times which is not only good on your time, but also great on your data plan if you aren't on the unlimited. Some new tools to help in your day to day time management include the calendar and address book options. The address book even has 1 click to call functionality. As far as email is concerned, common attachments can now be viewed, including images, word, excel and pdf's. When you're on the go, mobile maps are a great feature. Yahoo had tied in GPS integration for select devices, which is going to be a great tool not only for local users, but for people who travel frequently.

We took a look at what Yahoo offered with Go Mobile when it first came out, and it still looks like Yahoo holds the top spot for universal mobile applications. We have also had the chance to use a version of Yahoo Go 2.0 just before they added all these goodies in, and it were extremely impressed with what it brought to the table. Yahoo is once again directing its talent towards the online search world. This time around they are bringing their oneSearch technology to over one hundred million phones in the U.S.

oneSearch initially launched through Yahoo's successful Go for Mobile 2.0, providing its users an easy way to access and find information as quick as possible, and as of today its available to U.S users. Yahoo oneSearch drops in relevant content alongside search results. For instance, if users search for Pizza in New York, they are send back results for their destination, as well as other category suggestions, Flickr images relating to pizza, as well as pizza related websites, news articles, mobile pizza websites, web images, pizza products, and movies relating to pizza. With this comprehensive list, users are bound to find the content they are after quicker.

The oneSearch offering is currently only available to US users, but will be rolled out in additional countries and languages over the next few months. To use oneSearch on your mobile device, simply visit m.yahoo.com.

Yahoo! is expanding its Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0 service, with support for about 75 additional Windows Mobile based phone models. Yahoo! has also reached a deal with phone manufacturer HTC to preload the software onto a number of HTC models.

So what's Yahoo! Go for Mobile? It's basically a mobile interface for a group of Yahoo! services, including email, maps, search, Flickr photos, news and RSS feeds.

While Google also has a mobile interface for its version of most of these services, Yahoo bundles the whole thing into one application with a unified look and feel. That's a good thing when it comes to making applications prettier, but it's also an attempt to lock you into using Yahoo! for everything rather than choosing Google for mail and search and Yahoo for photos.

Of course, there's nothing preventing you from downloading Yahoo! Go for Mobile and only using a few of its features. It is free after all.

Yahoo! Go is the next generation of Yahoo! properties. It includes Y! Go Mobile for cell phone users, Y! Go Desktop for PC users (yet to be released) and Y! Go TV for television and multimedia PC users.

Y! Go TV (beta) was released a few months ago shortly following Y!'s acquisition of Meedio. The implementation was a stripped down version of Meedio's basic DVR product and was made available to US users as Y! Go TV for free.

Recently an upgrade to Y! Go TV was rolled out with several improvements but still as a beta.

• Picture in picture viewing capabilities
• View personal Flickr photostreams
• Support for more tuner/capture cards
• Overall user experience improvements (responsive and consistency of menus and navigation, video player and network experience)
• Movie recommendations
• Ability to access shared music from your local network

This latest upgrade supports many more tuners and the interface does appear more quick to respond and more intuitive to use compared with the original release.

In what has to be one of the fastest app re-brandings in history, Yahoo!, which acquired media center software maker Meedio last week, has released Yahoo! Go TV, a free re-branded version of Meedio for Windows. Yahoo! Go has all of the features you'd expect to see in a media center, including music, videos, photos, and full-fledged DVR functionality, plus the ability to search Yahoo! videos and, of course, view photos on Flickr.
