WhoNeedsAnIphone becomes FreeStyl: Windows Mobile program launcher

FreeStylWhen we told you about GoodWin, an iPhone-like program launcher for Windows Mobile, we included a link to a similar app that we'd discovered this summer. While the $20 GoodWin is pretty, it's also a bit clunky and difficult to use. The other application, on the other hand was elegant and free. The only problem is that last time we checked, it was in Alpha, meaning it was still pretty buggy. It also kept changing its name.

Now that other program has reached public beta, and is reportedly pretty stable. Oh yeah, and it has another name. The program formerly known as WhoNeedsAniPhone and FUILauncher, is now called FreeStyl.

There's still a pretty hefty list of requirements:
FreeStyl includes a program launcher, a screen locking application, and a redesigned contacts application. Developer Jason Jaegers is also working on a weather program and a music player that will also be finger-friendly. You can also choose from several different wallpapers.

Alpha version of FUILauncher released for Windows Mobile

Who Needs an iPhoneFlash developer Jason Jaegers set about to create an iPhone-inspired (but not duplicated) program launcher for Windows Mobile. A few weeks ago he posted some pretty pictures, and this weekend he released the first public alpha for download. The working name of the program is FUILauncher, for Flash user interface.

Here's a few things you need to know:
  • You'll need Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6, Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 SP1, and the Adobe Flash Lite 2.1 player to run FUILauncher.
  • The tabs that show unread voicemail and e-mail are not yet activated.
  • There's no indicator yet for what page you're on.
  • Once you create an icon you can change it, but there's no mechanism yet for deleting it.
  • You can't yet configure the permanent buttons at the bottom of the screen.
  • And there's no easy way to stop the server process without performing a soft reset on your device.
In other words, this release is for early adopters only.

Mobile Minute News: speech to text, memory management, and mobile search

Who Needs an iPhoneIn today's mobile Minute, we'll take a look at some of the latest news and software related to Windows Mobile devices.

Who Needs an iPhone?

Not long after Apple started showing off the iPhone in images and demos, the hacker community got to work making Windows Mobile devices mimic the mobile phone's innovative interface. But the truth is, Windows Mobile PDAs and phones will never actually be iPhones.

That's a good thing and a bad thing. Multi-touch screens would be nice. But removable storage, the ability to work with multiple carriers, and the fact that you may already have one in your pocket all work to Windows Mobile's advantage.

And so that's why it's exciting to check out the project at WhoNeedsAnIphone.com. One developer started off tinkering with Flash to see if he could make an iPhone-like interface for his PPC6700. But he quickly realized that he could use the iPhone interface as a starting point and go in different directions. For example, 16 icons on the program launcher doesn't take you very far when you can install hundreds of programs. So the bottom four buttons will turn from program launch buttons into page flipping buttons, giving you a total of 48 buttons to press for applications.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
