YouTube launches custom video players

YouTube's been busy rolling out tweaks to their ubiquitous video player. And it's not all about placing advertising on the screen. They've also launched a new custom player feature that lets you decorate your player in one of nine unattractive color schemes. The cool part is that you can also create a custom playlist for your player.

Here we have 7 videos created for or featured on Download Squad at some point during the last year. The nifty thing about the new player is that you can check each video out without leaving this page. The down side is that the player really wants to be 500 pixels by 430 pixels, so it doesn't quite fit into our site design. We had to crop it to make it sort of fit the page, so you can't see the glorious green border as Google intended it.

You'll need a YouTube account to create a custom player. And you'll probably want to create a new playlist in your favorites section unless you want to embed the videos of your cat prancing around the apartment along with your tech demos.

A peek inside Joost

So what's all this hullabaloo about Joost anyway? If you aren't lucky enough to score one of the invites we're giving away, take a peep inside Joost with our handy video. If you're impatient, skip ahead about a minute, because Joost on a Mac takes a wee bit to shake the cobwebs off.

OS X-compatible Yahoo! Music video player released as beta

Yahoo! Music video player screencapYahoo!'s corporate blog, Yodel Anecdotal, announced the availability of a new Yahoo! Music video player. This is a beta release and they have put up a slick user feedback mechanism for you to use in telling them how to make it better and what features rock (pardon the pun).

From the well-prepared tutorial the new features are:
  • Video Lineup: control the videos you want to watch! Create a customized video lineup, arrange and reorganize videos, monitor upcoming selections, and create your own session playlist.
  • Easy video search: from within the video player, instantly find videos by searching for your favorite artists or video titles.
  • Browse by category: get customized recommendations based on your video ratings, or choose from recommendations by category-Top 100, exclusive Nissan Live Sets, videos you've recently watched, and more!
  • All new design: everything at your fingertips! Enhanced video player controls, simplified video search, and easier ways to browse content-all in one place, within one interface.
  • Mac Compatible: now available for Macintosh OS X.

Google Video Player for OS X

Google Video Player for OS XI'm trying not to make this an all-Google news day, but yesterday at the official Google blog, Googler Matthew Vosburgh has announced the availability of Google Video Player for OS X. The Mac player does everything the Windows version does, most importantly letting you watch videos purchased through Google Video, plus the free ones, on something other than Windows. It's also a universal binary, so it'll work on both Intel and PowerPC Macs.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
