Video Codecs explained

Video CodecsVideo is, unfortunately, complicated. Probably the first thing that you will run into when dealing with digital video is the concept of codecs, and it can certainly be daunting. Of course, the best way to deal with a complicated topic is to learn about it. And if you're interested in video codecs and what they're all about, check out Atomic PC's article called Everything you ever wanted to know about video codecs.

While it's not actually going to answer every question you might have, it's a very well-written article that starts that the beginning, and quickly goes through the evolution of video codecs and what they currently mean to you (and everyone dealing with digital video). Well worth the read.

Any Video Converter

Any Video Converter[Update] I've changed the link to one suggested in the comments as being a more correct link. Some readers below experienced virus warnings when visiting the original link, although personally I did not, and had no virus issues with the download. I suspect this is a case of McAfee being a little overly-sensitive in its virus detection (in other words, a false-positive), but I have no way to know for sure, hence the updated link.

When you start dabbling with video files on a PC, one of the first things that happens is you realize that you need to convert a file from one of the myriad of video formats to another one. Then, as you start investigating how to go about doing that, you find that it's not such a simple task - at least that's what I found.

That's why I was very happy to discover Any Video Converter. This monster of a little utility can convert almost any video file to almost any others. The list of supported formats include DivX, XviD, MOV, rm, rmvb, MPEG, VOB, DVD, WMV, AVI to MPEG-4 movie format for iPod/PSP or other portable video device, MP4 player or smart phone. Oh, and did I mention that it's free?

Although it claims to be fast at converting files, the reality is that converting video takes time, and depending on the level of compression and file size, sometimes LOTS of time. That's just how it goes.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
