When Penguins Attack - Tower Defense Time Waster

If you play casual online games at all, it's almost impossible to avoid the Tower Defense genre. Building various weapons to take down a horde of invading baddies is old hat these days, and there are tons of spin-offs out there. But what if those invading baddies were ... penguins?! That's the premise of When Penguins Attack.

Gameplay-wise, Penguins is pretty standard TD fare. You've got your basic cheap towers, your flamethrowers, your anti-air towers, and your big, expensive guns. Your opposition, the penguin army has ... well, penguins. They come in regular and helmeted flavors, and they're backed up by planes, tanks and choppers. The penguin thing is a fun novelty at first, but let's be real: this is tower defense. Once the enemies start coming in quickly, you don't care what they look like, you just want to blow them up before they make it across the screen.

Onslaught - Today's Time Waster

OnslaughtIf you got addicted to Desktop Tower Defense, you'd probably better not read the rest of this post. Onslaught is another in a long line of tower defense games, but a darn good one. Where Desktop Tower Defense feels a bit constrained, Onslaught has a bit of a more organic feel to it.

The concept is the same - there are attacking "critters" that are trying to get past your defenses. Your job is to build defensive towers with varying abilities to stop the critters from advancing.

The graphics won't stun you, and many of the critters are hokey icons, for example the printer icon in the screenshot here. But if you can overlook that, the gameplay is strangely compelling. There are lots of ways to combine weapons and make something much more powerful, and the control mechanism is very easy to pick up.

Heed this warning: if you value your time, don't click through. If you do, you'll probably lose an hour or more before you know it.

Flash Element TD - Today's Time Waster

Flash Element TDI've seen games like Flash Element TD before and haven't been overwhelmed, but after playing this one for about 45 minutes, and then realizing I had been playing it for 45 minutes, I realized it's a keeper. It's of the "tower defense" genre, wherein you have to protect against wave after wave of baddies by building towers. Each tower has strengths and weaknesses against different enemies, which get progressively tougher. For each enemy you kill you get gold, which you can use to buy more towers, and for every seventh wave you get wood, which you can spend to unlock new types of towers. At the beginning of the game you have 20 lives, and you lose one life for every enemy you let pass. While nothing about Flash Element TD stands out too far at first blush, but after playing a few levels I was completely addicted. Check it out.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
