Mobile Minute news: Blackberry on Windows Mobile, free ZIP utility and more

In today's mobile Minute, we'll take a look at some of the latest news and software related to Windows Mobile devices.

BlackBerryRIM announces BlackBerry software for Windows Mobile

BlackBerry makers Research in Motion have announced plans to create a program that brings Blackberry software and services to devices running Windows Mobile 6.

The software will include email, phone, calendar, address book, tasks, memos, browser, instant messenger, and other applications developed to run on BlackBerries. Since the application will work like any other third-party Windows Mobile program, showing up on your screen as an icon you click to launch the suite, you'll be able to flip back and forth between the Windows Mobile calendar/email etc and the Blackberry suite.

The new program will enable push email on Windows Mobile devices (something you can already get for free through emoze), and allow companies to deploy software that will run either on BlackBerry or Windows Mobile devices. You'll also have a more input methods than on a traditional BlackBerry, with support for QWERTY keyboards, 5-way navigation buttons, or stylus support.

Customize your Windows Mobile interface - Mobile Minute

RE's Launcher and Unlocker
The default Windows Mobile interface not doing it for you? No problem. There are a thousand ways to customize everything from your Today Screen and program launchers to the way you open files.

First off, I'm going to ignore some of the more popular programs like Wisbar Advance. It's an excellent program, but I wanted to highlight some of the free alternatives.

RE's Launcher and Unlocker (Shown above)

We mentioned RE's launcher and Unlocker last week. The controversial programs are designed to resemble Apple's iPhone interface. While there are several similar programs floating around, this one's intriguing because an intellectual property lawyer has decided to host the files on his site as lawsuit-bait for Apple. He's hoping to prove the program does not infringe on any copyrights.

Anyway, the program doesn't turn your Windows Mobile phone or PDA into an iPhone. Each of the buttons links to a program you've already got on your device. Click on "web," and Pocket Internet Explorer opens up. "Calendar" brings up your Windows Mobile calendar, and so on.

The source code is available if you want to customize the links, which might be necessary, as I found that many of the icons point to programs I don't have installed on my device.

Installation is pretty simple. All you have to do is copy about 4.5MB of files to your device. You can put them anywhere, even on a storage card. Then click the program to start Launcher or the Slide/Unlocker program. If you want RE's Launcher to pop up every time you do a soft reset, just create a shortcut and copy it to the Windows/Startup folder.

Animated Today screens for Windows Mobile - Today's Time Waster

Animated today 4.0Sometimes you just get sick and tired of staring at appointments and phone numbers all day, and you think to yourself, wouldn't it be great if I had an aquarium scene on the Today screen of my PDA?

Okay, maybe not, but Animated Today has come up with a solution to the problem that you never knew you had. For $14.95 you can add a system resource hog to your Pocket PC and add animated visuals to your Today screen.

Version 4.0 adds support for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices, takes up less memory than previous versions, and supports landscape, square, and VGA screens.

I'm not really sure why a company that's been putting out software for at least four years is just now getting around to updating its products to Windows Mobile 5.0, but I'm also not entirely sure why you'd want to have an image of a dog romping around your PDA.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
