Gravity Pods 2 - Time Waster

Gravity Pods 2Gravity Pods 2 is a physics-inspired game where the goal is to aim and shoot a ball, and have it arrive at the target. To get it there, you are given a number of tools, or pods, that you can place. The most common one is the red gravity pod, but there are also blue repelling pods, and silver bounce pods. As you might expect, the gravity pods pull the ball around them with varying force, depending on how close the ball is to the pod. The repelling pods work in the opposite manner.

The game gives you total freedom with where to place the pods, which is a blessing and a curse; the total freedom means that you're always wondering if you're so close and just need one more tiny adjustment to beat the level, or if your strategy is entirely wrong, and you need to take a totally fresh approach.

The game also has a bit of a running commentary, and a boatload of snarky comments to "encourage" you. I found myself motivated to beat each level just to see what the next comment was.

Target enters digital music biz with John Legend album

john legend target
After about three years of preparing and attempting to get into the digital music business, Target is finally offering digital music (320kbps MP3) for download. Currently the only album available is the latest John Legend album "Live From Philadelphia" with SonyBMG as the label. The album is a Target exclusive, so you'll need to shop there if you're lookin' to score the latest of Legend, but it's also available in-store in CD format . The 19-track set will run you $10 online, which is a steal for so much music.

Though it may seem like the digital-download market is starting to get crowded with new services popping up all the time, there's still a lot of room for major iTunes competitors to surface. It's also nice to have options when it comes to shopping. The digital-download market is no exception, so we gladly welcome Target to the new frontier.

Google says no to behavioral targeting

Google says no to behavioral targetingEven though Google wants to make the best possible choices when it comes to connecting users with relevant products and services, they are very cautious about tracking behavior.

Google has stated that they are turning away the possibility to develop tools to compile user's actions in a profile to deliver more targeted ad results. Competition might be heading this way, but Google is not going this route for a number of reasons. First off, they believe that task based information at the exact time of the search is that most relevant information the user is looking for. Secondly it's the user's privacy. No information is stored on Google's servers, everything happens in one search session alone.

1.3 million movies sold on iTunes

AppleAfter three short months, sales of Disney movies through the iTunes Store have hit 1.3 million downloads, in addition to 20 million television show downloads. However, Paramount has been the only other movie studio that has joined Apple since October of 2006. Why? No one wants to upset colossal retailers like Wal-Mart and Target, which are responsible for the majority of DVD sales. But will these latest sales figures help convince other companies in joining the digital download game? Finanicial Times reports that Disney CEO Bob Iger said digital distribution is "creating more consumption of media....The message that we deliver to our traditional [retail] partners is that the pie is getting bigger." Part of the retailer argument against digital downloads is the lower pricing. Because, you know, $12.99 is apparently a good deal for a lower quality (than DVD) movie download without any extras and limited viewing capabilities. However, Apple has previously expressed its unwillingness to change its current pricing structure. Ultimately, it seems almost guaranteed that digital downloads will continue to gain market prominence, but only time will tell to see if and when other companies will hop onboard with Apple.

Target becomes target of class-action suit

TargetTarget faces a class-action lawsuit this week because their website was deemed inaccessible for those with disabilities like blindness. The judge struck down a motion to drop the case stating that Target must make its website accessible to those with disabilities just as if they were shopping in their physical stores. The judge cited the Americans with Disabilities Act, saying Target is legally obligated to serve its online customers with the same provisions as brick-and-mortar stores. Target is still hopeful that this will not be the final word, and the ruling has not been finalized yet, but this case does raise interesting issues and accessibility law considerations for many companies, depending on how this case turns out.

Yahoo! ads begin eBay auction invasion

eBay and Yahoo! partnership - eboo!eBay sellers this week have discovered one of the first major results of the handshake between Yahoo! and eBay that happened back in May: targeted ads that appear (for now) only on search result pages that yield no items. Apparently, many of the sellers who complained to eBay had no prior knowledge these ads were being introduced, but eBay's North American president Bill Cobb stated in May that the ads would be for complementary products and services.

And therein lies the problem: sellers are finding that not only do the ads lead buyers away from searching and shopping at eBay, but they seem to do the exact opposite of what Mr. Cobb promised, offering products and services that are, in fact, competing.

An eBay spokesperson stated that these ads are currently in a testing phase, so the system that dictates which ads appear when and where is definitely still on the drawing board. If anything is to be learned from this development, however, it is probably this: eBay sellers, try to sell products that are easy to spell, otherwise your potential customers might be led somewhere else due to a missed letter and a well-targeted Yahoo! ad.
