Sun sets Java free

JavaLater today Sun Microsystems is expected to release the source code to its Java platforms after years of speculation and urging by the open source community. Unlike Solaris and J2EE, which were released under the Common Development and Distribution License, Sun has opted to release the source code for Java Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) and Mobile Edition (J2ME) under the venerable GPL. It will be taking the "classpath exception" to the license, however, which will allow companies and developers who make Java programs to release their software under different licensing, including closed-source ones. Sun's Jonathan Schwartz and Rich Green will be making a webcast at 9:20 a.m. PT today, which can be seen at sun.com/opensource/java, which is also where you'll be able to find the source code and other resources. Sun's Tim Bray provides a few more details on what's in store in his blog.

UK is on the move to create an Internet Monster

uk internet monsterTony Blair, UK's Prime Minister, is on the move to create an internet monster. He has been spending some time recently in Silicon Valley with some of California's biggest minds, picking their brains.

Blair is on the hunt to figure out how the US's tech sector has created some of the biggest worldwide players in the internet industry. Some of the people Blair has met with include Steve Jobs of Apple, John Chambers of Cisco Systems, and Jonathon Schwartz of Sun Microsystems.

Even though there are some great internet companies that are starting to emerge from the UK, they might still have to learn the golden rule of the valley. Risk Taking is a virtue, and failure is not seen as a black x.

Eric Schmidts April Fools office furniture

eric schmidt april fools vw beetleBack in the day when a young Eric Schmidt (with rather large glasses) was a manager at Sun Microsystems, his employees thought it would be rather hilarious if they were to exchange a VW beetle with his office furnishings.

Giraffes showed up at his house, and gave him papers to a car. Thinking it was a weird joke, Schmidt left for work. Upon arriving at work, there was the car. It had been disassembled, and brought into his office. Check out the video after the flip.

[Thanks Mike]

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire.
