Speed Read : Improve Your Reading and Retention Skills

With the number of laptops I reinstall Windows on every day constantly on the rise, I've been looking for applications that might help boost my pitiful short-term memory - for some reason, my boss frowns upon me playing Brain Age at work.

And since 6AM isn't the best time to be shouting at something in my house (toddler, wife, etc.), I need something a bit more quiet to help me practice. Speed Read may be just the app for the job.

The idea is very simple: display the number of words you choose at a specified interval to improve your ability to recall groups of words and maintain attention to the subject. Speed Read will display text from any text file and comes packaged with 51 sample files.

You can, of course, add your own, which is a good idea. If you're serious about practicing, you may as well be reading something you enjoy. As your skill improves, increase the number of words displayed and turn up the speed to keep the exercise challenging.

It works quite well, and after sticking with it for about a week I definitely notice an improvement already in my ability to read quickly - and remember.

Speed reading with Zap Reader and Spreeder

Spreeder lets you read text at full speedI've been an on again off again speed reader for some time. Every couple of years I find myself in the book store going through the discount bin and finding, buying, and reading yet another speed reading book. I'm addicted to the idea of speed reading, even if the art itself somewhat escapes me.

Spreeder and Zap Reader are two tools designed to help you improve your speed reading ability on the web. The basic idea behind each tool is that you copy content from the web (an article from the New York Times, for example) into the tool on the website. Then you click the play button and "read" the article one word at a time. Controls let you adjust the speed at which each word is shown to you so that you can read faster or slower.

Both of these tools work well for speed readers because they let you work through an article more quickly by resting your eyes at the same place on the screen as the application churns through the content for you. And, since speed reading is really the art of recognizing words and phrases instead of just letters, the focus on a single word acts as a kind of flash card system to help you memorize both small and large words quickly.

Spreeder - another online speed-reading application

SpreederJust like ZAP Reader, Spreeder is an online speed-reading application that will help train your brain to read faster. Although they function very much the same, Spreeder's main goal in life isn't simply to allow you to read articles online more quickly; Spreeder wants to make you into a faster reader in general.

Basically, using a speed-reading application like Spreeder forces you to drop the habit of backreading, which is exactly what you think it is - you know, when you read a sentence over and over again. Instead, you learn that you better catch it the first time, because there's no going back. Secondly, it forces your reading to outpace the little voice in your head that subvocalizes everything you read as you read it. Although very common, subvocalizing actually slows your reading down, since we're capable of taking in information faster that it can actually be spoken.

Lastly, Spreeder can be configured to show full chunks of text, rather than one word at a time. Since we can recognize words and groups of words by their shapes alone, learning to read this way can vastly improve our reading speed.

Here's the coolest part. Hidden under a Plugins link at the top of the screen is a bookmarklet that will allow you to simply select text on a page, click the bookmarklet, and have a new Spreeder window or tab spawned with your text already loaded into it.

ZAP Reader: Web-based speed-reading trainer

ZAP ReaderWant to read faster? Try ZAP Reader. It's a free web app that will, in theory, as much as quadruple your reading speed. It works like this: You find some text you want to read fast, you paste it into ZAP Reader and hit Play, and ZAP Reader starts flashing the words on the screen. You can control the speed it goes at (it starts at 30 words per minute) and pause it, and you can skip backward or forward. I tried it and was surprised at how fast I was able to push myself, though I found that only being able to see one word at a time made my brain skip a beat on words I'm not used to, in particular trade names. ZAP Reader also has a bookmarklet which, when clicked, will automatically feed any text you've selected into ZAP Reader. You can see a video of ZAP Reader in action after the jump.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
