YouTube and New Orleans team up for presidential forum

youtube new orleans presidential forum
YouTube, the mayor of New Orleans, and the governor of Louisiana have publicly invited the presidential candidates to participate in a presidential forum this September. Since this is not an official debate, it is unknown if any of the candidates will actually show up. Either way, the event should prove successful -- here's why.

It's been quite some time since New Orleans was hit by Hurricane Katrina, but the city is not done suffering. There's about 86,000 evacuees stuck in Houston, Atlanta and 40 other cities, and there the government currently has no plan on how it will bring these people home (not to mention the city's other 921,332,437,208 problems). So even if the candidates don't show up to the debate, the publicity stunt should help to remind government officials that it's not over yet. In other words, it's a giant call for help.

Despite that many may dismiss YouTube as a time-waster, this isn't the site's first dive into the presidential race. Last year, YouTube allowed its users to record and send in questions, which would be answered by the candidates on TV. And though we know the Google owned site gets a lot of great publicity out stuff like this, we can't help but tip our hat for the good work.

Municipal WiFi capacity gets a boost

municipal wifiPhiladelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans are some of the cities that will be enjoying a boost in their citywide WiFi networks care of their provider.

WiFi equipment provider, Tropos Networks, a major municipal WiFi supplier based in Sunnyvale, California, announced that they will be providing a 50% boost in capacity. This means that many service providers will be able to increase bandwidth drastically for users, which is much needed these days to the ever expanding world of video and multimedia content online.

The specific equipment needed for the boost will be out in October, and there will be a test phase rolled out to unspecified customers.

Survival of New Orleans blog

neworleansblog The Interdictor is a LiveJournal blog from New Orleans. How? You'll have to read the saga of these guys to find out. It is fascinating, disturbing, and in some ways historic. Not to mention a feat of pure gumption. Outpost Crystal is apparently still up and running (there's even a webcam), and blogging live to the world what's really going on in New Orleans. They apparently host SomethingAwful.com. Yeah, it's offline as of right now. Also, the pics page is down, so don't bother. Try not to IM the last few guys there, they are, uh, a little busy. Feeding the generators has been their top priority (well, after water and food and keeping safe), and they're just trying to stay online to keep the news coming out. Citizen journalism at its best, gripping, gritty, and raw. Check it out, but don't hammer it all day, OK?

And don't forget to donate some money to the Red Cross.

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
