Windows Live Search for Mobile update adds business photos and reviews

Microsoft has pushed out an update to their browser-based local search and mapping site.

Enhancements include:
  • 1-click directions for all businesses and street addresses in U.S. This is sweet; you can see directions to the particular location depending on where you are coming from: north, south, east or west. You also have the option to specify a starting location.
  • Additional details for U.S. businesses, including neighborhood, business category, cuisine (restaurants) and hours of operation.
  • Photos and reviews for U.S. businesses. The photos are nice; you can check out whether the place is a dive. Are the lights burnt out on the neon sign outside? Chances are the food is suffering as well. The reviews are also extremely helpful.
  • Improved movie show times Instant Answers (they now show critics rating; one thumb or two?)
  • Added interactivity to all maps (clicking on maps now zooms in/out to predefined levels, or advanced to the next waypoint for routing maps)
  • Traffic & map Instant Answers
  • Mobile search for the China market. Scopes offered are local (no maps, but coming soon), web, images, news and Spaces.
All in all, it's a very feature rich update, and it should make life in the fast lane a little easier to navigate.

Point your mobile browser to http://m.live.com/ for the experience. Don't forget, Windows Mobile Live Search also includes weather, web search, stock quotes, and more.

Sprint and Microsoft team up to bring customers enhanced Mobile Search

mobile phoneSprint and Microsoft have teamed up to bring users what they call "the industry's first fully integrated GPS location-aware mobile search service."

The service which launches today is available on Sprint phones and allows users to use one search box to search the web, local listings, and maps at the same time as well as use their cell phones GPS to quickly find local businesses without having to manually input their location. So next time you're on vacation you don't have to know where you are to find out where the nearest Starbucks is or where you can score a piece of pizza. One neat aspect of the new service is voice search which allows users to search by saying a business name and then have their search results show up on the screen.

Sprint's enhanced mobile search is available now on most data-enabled Sprint phones at no additional cost for data subscribers. The voice search feature is available for users on select handsets as a free download.

AOL launches updated mobile portal

AOL Mobile searchAOL (this blog's parent company) has launched a new and improved mobile portal for searching the web and AOL content from your cellphone or portable device.

The new portal integrates AOL properties including Moviefone, Mapquest, and CityGuide. When you conduct a search, the results screen will have several tabs at the top for switching between local, images, web, finance, and other sections. AOL determines which tabs to show based on your search, rather than constantly displaying a dozen tabs on your tiny mobile screen.

There's also a click to call feature that lets mobile phone users dial any phone number listed on a web page by clicking on it.

Cellphone makers are continuing to make devices that are more and more like full fledged computers. The Apple iPhone supports a full version of the Safari web browser. But the truth of the matter is portable devices often have slow internet connections and always have small screens. It's nice to see that companies like AOL, Google, and Yahoo understand that and are developing tools to make the mobile web almost as useful as the regular web.

Google working on search engine for mobile content

Google ServicesGoogle is yet again adding to its ever growing list of services -- but the latest product in the works makes a lot of sense. The search giant is working on a niche search engine that will help cellphone users find ringtones, games, and other mobile content.

Google already provides a version of its internet search engine optimized for mobile devices with smaller screens and slower internet connections.

The new product could be a major money maker for Google. Cellphone users spend billions of dollars on phones, service, and content. Google will provide links for you to download and buy mobile goods like ringtones, wallpapers, and games. The company will charge content providers a fee for placing links at the top of a search results page, much the way it does with its regular search engine. Of course, that kind of placement could be even more valuable with the limited real estate on most mobile screens.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
