Yahoo! concocts a spicier new version of Widgets and Konfabulator

Yahoo! concocts a new version of Widgets and Konfabulator

Yahoo! has launched an updated version of the Yahoo! Widget Engine and gallery. Yahoo! Widget Engine 4.5 has the same look and feel on your desktop as version 4.0, but there are some changes in the way widgets are created and organized.

First, Yahoo! has retooled its online widget gallery to give you more information about what each widget does. Users now also have a quick view of the most downloaded, highest rated and newest widgets, and can share Widgets directly with friends on IM, email, a Yahoo! Widget badge, del.icio.us, Digg and Reddit.

Second, there's now support for Flash and HTML based widget design. Yahoo! has also teamed up with the NBA to vote on All Stars, RockYou to create and watch slideshows on the desktop, and the Netvibes UWA will now be available as a Yahoo! Desktop Widget from the Netvibes Ecosystem. And if you still aren't satisfied, Yahoo! Finance has also improved their powerful stock Widget.

Check out a screeenshot of the new RockYou Yahoo! Widget after the jump.

Yahoo's Widgets play nicely with Vista

yahoo widgetWith the launch of Microsoft's Windows Vista today, I have to say that I will not be installing it for awhile. Why? Simple reason: I want to see what works with the new operating system, what needs upgrading, and what totally bombs out on it. I utilize quite a few of Yahoo's widgets for my PC and was excited to learn today that the Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.1 and all of their over 3,700 widgets have no issues running on Vista. That's one daily use application checked on my list. Will the others work? I will have to wait until some further reports come out. Until that time, no Vista for me. Stay tuned as Download Squad covers the trials and tribulations that come with the new Microsoft Vista release.

TheSpringBox: Widget engine for desktop and web

Spring BoxThe Spring Box is a widget engine for the web and for the desktop that is just plain sprung (sorry, I grew up near Chicago, so I still know a little street slang). The product is in beta, so you know it is cool like all the other roller-shoe wearing kids, but this also means there are not a lot of widgets available for consumption just yet. There is an API for developers that you can use (developer skills preferable) to make your own widgets, available by contacting the company. Currently the list of widgets you can use are: RSS reader, NFL GameTrax, Scoreboard, Clock. You can embed the widgets anywhere that accepts code such as MySpace, Faces.com, Friendster, Xanga, and many more or download the engine to use on your desktop. One idea Spring Box may want to explore is some way to display Yahoo or other widgets on their engine, to allow integration across other widget-works (if at all possible). So check it out and start gettin' sproingy with it!

Most popular Yahoo! Widget Engine (Konfabulator) widgets

Winamp remote widgetYahoo!'s Widget Engine (formerly Konfabulator) is conspicuously missing any sort of "most popular widgets" list, so Jon Aquino build his own. His Ning-powered Most Downloaded Konfabulator Widgets page ranks the top 500 widgets in order of downloads along with ratings, descriptions, and so on. Currently topping the list are the mini CPU, Winamp Remote, and World Clock Pro widgets.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
