Digg THIS Kevin Rose - Reddit goes completely open source

LOL Kevin RoseDigg has legions of followers. They're quite fanatical. The similar service Reddit doesn't have that type of following.

But how many of the Digg fantatics know how Digg works anyways? There's some type of "algorithm" that controls what hits the homepage. Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson have hinted to that it involves who is digging what, the rate at which the stories are dugg, and we think that it involves something with the space time continium. That and what side of the bed MC Hammer wakes up on.

But nobody really knows but Digg.

Today, the #1 competitor to Digg, Condé Nast's Reddit, says "Screw you guys, we're going transparent". That's not an actual quote, but the company's actions say that in a nutshell.

Condé Nast is opening up Reddit's codebase to developers, your moms and dads, your pet fish, and whoever else has a computing device hooked up to the interwebs.

Om Malik brings Calacanis and Rose together for a rare photo-op

It's no secret that Jason Calacanis -- founder and former head-hancho of Weblogs, Inc. -- and Kevin Rose -- that Digg kid -- have a mild feud between them. After Calacanis re-launched Netscape.com as a competing social news portal, albeit with a different target market, Rose and Calacanis fought publicly on their respective blogs in the public eye.

Valleywag reports on a not-quite tearful reunion and burying of the respective hatchets at a launch party thrown by Revision3, Rose's on-line video company.

Aww, it's good to see thekids play nice for a change.

Digg unveils iPhone beta app

Get ready to fire up your bookmarks ladies and gents, cuz digg just joined the ranks of the iPhone-friendly. On the digg blog this afternoon, Kevin Rose announced that digg.com/iphone has gone live, offering access to some of the site's key features in a slick, iPhone-ized package that runs great on mobile Safari. Users can of course log in and digg, and mini-permalinks as well as top 5 comments on stories are also available. The tailored site even features a slick iPhone-like (or rather: iPod-like) scrolling UI when selecting a story, giving the iPhone version of digg a subtle feeling of running as actual software on the phone.

If you think this is cool, you might be surprised to hear that it was drafted and coded within 48 hours by one of digg's ninjas, Joe Stump. Rose offered Stump an iPhone if he could bang out the code within 48 hours, and as Rose states on the post, he's out one more iPhone. Impressive work for a cool prize.

More features are of course coming (Top Stories is at the top of the list), but users can still browse the main digg site on the iPhone; this customized app is simply a way to streamline the site for just the on-the-go essentials.

Pownce: Up close and personal

We've mentioned Pownce previously on DownloadSquad, but instead of just a little preview, here's an in-depth look at the Kevin Rose start-up that is the object of desire right now for invite-junkies everywhere.

So what exactly is Pownce? Well, it's hard to define in a quick and concise way - but the raison d'etre is simply this: "Pownce is brought to you by a bunch of geeks who were frustrated trying to send stuff from one cube to another". It offers a Twitter-like status of 'What are you doing', but goes even farther to allow even more post types, and even contact groups.

Kevin Rose launches his Instant Messaging network, Pownce

pownce online instant messagingIt was known that Kevin Rose of Digg fame has been working with a small team on something to do with instant messaging for a little while now. Well, the kittie kat jumped, or should I say Pownced out of the bag on Tuesday night.

Pownce is a way to send anything from messages, files, links and events to friends online. It runs care of Adobe's Apollo runtime platform, taking advantage of its many benefits like building one application for Mac, PC and Linux operating systems, and Amazons S3 file storage. So in order to use it, AIR must be downloaded and installed first.

First thing you do to get started with Pownce is to create a network of friends that you want to share items with, then you can choose whether to send it to the whole list, or specific people. Basically, whoever you want to read or see you item, will be able to. It's free, and ad supported.

Pownce is still in an invite only mode so the system can be monitored and scaled accordingly. Users who want to get in on this application can sign up on the Pownce website. Look out for a full review on DownloadSquad when we are lucky enough to score an invite.

Digg to add photos, product and restaurant reviews

Speaking at TheNextWeb conference (via a video link) Digg founder Kevin Rose hinted at some changes coming to the social news site in the next 6 to 12 months.

In a nutshell, Rose says he wants to allow users to Digg just about anything you might want to share with your friends, not just news and videos. That includes photos, product and restaurant reviews, but it probably won't stop there.

There's no shortage of social ranking sites these days, but Digg's strength has always been its tech-savvy audience. The site has added categories since its inception, but some fare better than others with the regular Digg crowd. Meanwhile, other sites like Netscape and Reddit tend to skew less tech-heavy, and have more popular stories on their front pages about general news and entertainment topics.

But this doesn't mean Digg will have to replace its user base in order to balance restaurant reviews with stories about breaking AACS keys. Rather, Rose says Digg will use information it gathers about what stories you've dugg, submitted, buried or shared with friends to recommend stories you may be interested in.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
