Give Ubuntu a facelift with new community themes and icon sets

A lot of new Ubuntu users are put off by the default color scheme. "Brown and orange? Those are colors a non-winning football franchise would pick." (you know I love you, Browns!) Well, it's really not all that hard to tweak your interface to something more "you" in Ubuntu -- and soon there will be some more default options available.

Four new community-developed themes are now available, and they're all well done and visually appealing. While there are still plenty of mocha tones, I think each one is a nice alternative to Ubuntu's out-of-the-box look.

Flipping the Linux switch: The GNOME desktop environment

There is a controversy in the Linux world. It doesn't have to do with Microsoft, or anything overtly technical. It may seem, to the outsider, the open source equivalent of the question, "Boxers or briefs?" But it's much more serious than that.

GNOME or KDE? There's a lot of emotion on both sides of the argument. Because we here at Download Squad value our lives, we're not going to tell you which is the best (yeah, as if we agree anyway). What matters is what works best for you. That's why we're spending this week and next discussing the virtues and pitfalls of GNOME and KDE.

The GNOME project began in 1997. GNOME is built from entirely open software under the LGPL (Lesser General Public License), unlike KDE, which uses the dual-licensed Qt toolkit. This means that both proprietary software and open software can link to the libraries that make up GNOME -- free of charge. Encouraging developers in this way brings more choices and stronger applications to Linux.

Run Linux apps on Windows or OS X with Lina

Next month a California-based startup plans to release an application that will allow Windows, Mac, and Linux users run Linux binaries without any modifications. Lina is a Linux virtual machine that allows users to run applications with the native look of their host operating system. It also lets you install applications with a mouse-click, no need to compile software from source code.

The idea is that developers will be able to create programs for one platform, and they'll be able to run on three different operating systems. This could both expand the market for open source Linux applications, and cut down work for developers. Lina will be free for open source developers, while a licensing fee will apply to commercial developers.

Lina is still a work in progress, with no support for GTK+ or USB peripherals yet. The virtual machine takes up less than 40MB when installed.
