NetMeter - Another way to monitor your network connection

Yesterday we told you about FreeMeter, an open source project which allows you to keep track of how much dump-trucking you're doing to those Internet tubes. Download Squad reader Piyo upped the ante with NetMeter, another network monitoring app without the extra features of FreeMeter, but with a few tricks of its own.

NetMeter isn't just transparent on systems running Windows 2000 or later, but also supports click-through, so your transparent NetMeter is also transparent to your mouse. That means you can lay NetMeter on top of anything with the transparency cranked up and never be forced to move it out of your way to get to another application awkwardly placed behind.

The application hasn't been updated in quite a while, but it's free, fully functional and works like a charm.

[Thanks Piyo!]

Freemeter - keep tabs on your network connection

How much data are you pouring through the tubes? Freemeter lets you know at a glance whether you're treating the internet like a dumptruck.

Better still, there's no installer and nothing complicated to configure. Freemeter can either hang out on your desktop in fully opaque or variably transparent trim or stay hidden away in your system tray for easy access. Also built in to this clever little utility is a simple traceroute and ping console, as well as the ability to act as a notifier for a single Pop3 or IMAP email account. For the adventurous, the source code is available.

It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
