AppleWorks for Windows - Freaky Friday Find

appleworks for windowsI remember Claris. What a great little tool, ClarisWorks. Then Apple snarfed the company back up, and it became AppleWorks. And let's face it, aside from an ugly port to OS X, AppleWorks has remained the "free with your iBook" crappy Office knockoff it's been for years. But I had no idea they still offered AppleWorks for Windows. What a world. And why bother? OpenOffice is fantastic in Windows. On the Mac it has a few, shall we say, issues to resolve... But that's where we find it. I'd love to see the sales chart for the Windows version of AW though. By now it must look like a chart of the adoption rate for Windows ME. I mean, the iBook on the page isn't even a G4! Besides, iWork is a lot more fun to use, even without a spreadsheet or database tool. This stinker debuted in 2002, and four years later needs to just go away now... And this coming from a guy with a Pentium II in his garage running an Ubuntu LiveCD.

Web 2.1 beta - Friday Freaky Find

web 2.1 betaYou can safely file this under "pointless." I was brave enough to download and launch the .exe, which did nothing harmful to my machine.  However, Web 2.1 beta a cute sendup of Web 2.0, and should remind everyone enjoying Writely, Google Base, digg, and all that other newfangled goodness, that Web 2.0 is a bit of a bubble still. The average person out there doesn't know anything more about Web 2.0 than they knew about the price Yahoo! paid for Broadcast.com back in the 20th century. So what does Web 2.1 look like? I've given a preview in the pic. This is a joke folks, try not to be offended. And the author should be made aware that Web 3.0 is already well underway...

Strange Palm apps - Today's Freaky Find

bizarre palm appsI'll admit to having at least one on this list, but I'm not saying which one. None of these are exactly new, but when's the last time you heard of a cool new app for the PalmOS? After all, isn't the entire platform shifting to Linux? Hopefully that shift, when it does take place, will open the door for all new weird apps... But for now, here's a list of nine bizarre Palm applications. There's a little something for everyone, the cheapskate, the sex god, even the poor space marine trapped in Doom. I love the app that pretends you have a call on your Treo, but I've never tried the flashlight app because I've never owned a color Palm (monochrome is the new black). Anyway, these are nice, and there's even a link to some comparable PocketPC versions. Strange little things indeed...

A bunch of Freaky Friday Find apps

freak softwareI had to do it sooner or later. I Googled "freaky software." True to the claims of the search masters, I found Freak Software, purveyors of fine, freaky OS X apps. There's actually one little OS 9 app, but who's counting? I am, and I count ten apps, one widget, and three games. Not too shabbby! There's even some useful stuff in there, like the Freaky Trash Manager (great idea), Freaky Tuner (for instruments needing tuning), and a really cool app called FSCalendar that gives you a hidden calendar in the menu bar. Looks like most are free, with the developer charging for just a few of the more useful apps. Now where are all the "freak" Windows developers hanging out?

Useless software - Freaky Friday Find

useless softwareNot one, but three pieces of strangeness today. Three "useless" apps. The first might be useful, as it is one of those handy hex color pickers. The next is a useless name generator, for those of you too lazy (or busy?) to think of fake names on your own. It won't create classics like I.C. Weiner or anything, but it's cute nonetheless. And the last is my personal favorite: Useless. I'll let the author speak for his work, "The award-winning Useless™ does absolutely nothing better and faster than the competition! And as it looks cyberpunkish, so you can also use it to impress your wannabe hacker friends." Did I mention these were all done with Visual Basic? Spiffy.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
