World's Oldest Time-Waster? Lunar Lander

It won't win any beauty contests, and it has a pretty weak storyline unless you have a magnificent imagination, but Lunar Lander may well be one of the oldest time-wasters in existence.

High-school student Jim Storer, obsessed with the Apollo missions -- and obviously inspired by what he'd witnessed along with the rest of the world, 40 years ago today -- took his inspiration to class in the fall of 1969. The result was a very simple text-based game for his school's Digital Equipment Corp. PDP-8. "It had 8 Teletypes, a small hard drive, and 12KB of main memory, where 8KB was used by the system and 4KB time shared by the users."

Storer, can lay claim to the first primitive game but, what about the graphical Lunar Lander we've all known and loved on one platform or another? DEC consultant Jack Burness developed the first known graphical Lunar Lander as a demo project for the DEC GT40 console in 1973. It certainly wasn't the first video game, but it definitely holds its place in video game history.

Feel like wasting a little time day-dreaming about the 40th aniversary of the Apollo moon landing? Flash versions of Lunar Lander are easy to find, but I especially love this one -- which is incredibly true to the Atari arcade version I remember as a kid wandering the halls at the Cumberland Science Museum.

Youda Farmer is fun for a few minutes - Time-Waster

Youda FarmerYouda Farmer is a nice little flash game. You have to grow products on your farm and deliver them into the village. Each level requires you to deliver more and to add on to your farm to offer more products. The more you do, the more the little village begins to prosper.

The first few levels are almost painfully easy. There is no growing involved really, all you have to do is click on products to put them into delivery crates, which then magically load into your pickup truck. Then into the village you go, where a series of clicks will deliver all the products and net you some cash. You then use the cash to buy farm improvements.

The higher levels get a bit more difficult as you go from needing to pick up 6 items to 30 or 40 items. Your little pickup truck just doesn't go all that fast. So, if you stick it out, it does get more challenging. Is it my new favorite game? No, but, I just played it for 20 minutes and will probably go back later today and try and get past some of the higher levels.

The music is rather annoying though, so I'd suggest you get ready to turn that part off. Not into farming? Try out Youda Camper where you build your own campground instead.

Micro Olympics - Time Waster

Micro Olympics is a simple, yet addictive Flash-based game that brings wasting time and shooting things out of a cannon to a whole new level.

There are three varieties of Micro Olympics, the original, Micro Olympics on Mars and Micro Olympics Christmas. All three have the same guiding principal: shoot your plane, flying saucer or Santa's sled further than your competitor.

You control the height of your launch by clicking on the cannon and stopping at your desired angle. The velocity of the launch is then chosen by when you click on the canon as you see the velocity increase and decrease. Match the right angle with high enough velocity and you're golden.

In each round you are given three opportunities to best your competitors average distance. After each launch session, you are awarded points based on distance, bonus points dependent on other features and money that can be used at the end of each round to buy add-ons that will help you obtain higher distances, either through power-ups or bonus points.

The first few rounds are pretty easy, but after that, I got stuck and had to start playing with power-ups to increase my distance. Thirty minutes later, I finally remembered that I better start writing up this post instead of playing Micro Olympics.

The graphics are pretty hilarious, especially when landing (Christmas Olympics is worth a play just to see how Santa lands in the snow -- adorable). The sounds are fun too, but office workers might want to make sure that you disable the effects and background music or mute your workstation before playing.

Become a sushi chef - Time Waster

The road to becoming a sushi chef is a long and hard one. Over 10 years are spent learning this culinary art form. From proper handling of the fish to mastering the intricate knife work, the dedication required is truly amazing. But if you're not sure that the profession is right for you why not fill in as a sushi chef for a week at Sushi Go Round.

Like any good sushi chef your goal is to keep your patrons happy by preparing their orders correctly and timely. When a customer places an order consult your recipe book, create it and send the dish down the conveyor belt. If you don't follow the recipe correctly your end product will be a turd of a dish, so no improvising here.

In addition, you'll have to also play executive chef keeping tabs on inventory, ordering when supplies are low. And if you're not careful, you may end up with no ingredients to make your dishes. In order to keep your customers happy you can certainly offer them some sake while you pay extra to have your deliveries rushed.

As you progress further into the week your menu expands and your daily goal increases. But remember a sushi chef is rooted in honor and tradition so keep your skills as sharp as your knives and press forward!

Time Waster: Music Catch

If you need a minute to relax from some stress at work, Music Catch is the game for you. The idea behind the game is pretty simple: catch the flying shapes while some relaxing piano music plays.

Most of the shapes in the game are blue and teal in color. In addition to the blue and teal shapes there are yellow shapes that you can collect that make your man larger and multiply your score, red shapes that take away the bonus you earned with the yellow, and purple shapes that give you "Purple Power" which sucks in everything around you.

The whole thing is pretty simple. There's only one level that takes about 5 minutes to play. With top scores over a million point however, it can be just as addictive as it is relaxing.

ToonCrisis- Today's Time Waster

Toon Crisis
Using an interesting blend of real-world video and cartoon-enemy overlays, ToonCrisis is a fun Flash shooter with an original soundtrack of punk-ish/ska songs to keep you motivated.

The objective is simply to kill the monsters by aiming your laser-shooting hand (which is, of course, in the shape of a gun) at them and clicking the left mouse button. There are different types of enemies including some that don't move but shoot things at you, some that move and take a bunch of shots to kill, and bosses (complete with separate energy meter) that must be beat before moving to the next stage.

The game flow is similar to arcade games like Area 51, Time Crisis, and Virtua Cop in that you walk a bit, kill all the enemies, walk more, kill enemies, defeat boss, repeat.

Bloons - Today's Time-Waster

In the game Bloons, your goal is to pop all of the balloons on the screen by throwing darts at them. In each of the games 50 levels the balloons are arranged in a different order. With each level you are given a specific amount of darts to throw at the balloons (sometimes just one) and a target number of balloons you'll have to pop to move on to the next level.

Levels get progressively harder as you go on and start adding things like a bouncing wall, and walls you have to break through to get to the balloons. You also encounter "special balloons" which start effects such as giving you a boomerang rater than a dart to throw, or giving you the ability to throw three darts at once.

Kung-Fu Election - Today's Time Waster

Are you tired of watching all the election coverage on the news? Do you wish the candidates would just fight it out old school style in a no holds bar fight to the death rather than drop out entirely ? Your dreams can come true (sort-of) with the game Kung-Fu Election.

In the game you get to select your favorite candidate, and then put them head to head in a Kung-Fu fight for the presidency. Choices of characters include Clinton, Obama, Edwards, Richardson, Giuliani, Huckabee, Romney, and McCain. All come equipped with their own weapons, and there's a training mode so you can get acquainted with your candidate before making a run for the white house.

Tiny Drum Machine - Today's Time Waster

Play the Tiny Drum Machine

Created by the food folks at PixelPlanet, this half-time-waster-half-technology-demo is all fun. The Tiny Drum Machine (now in its fifth version) is a music maker where you control the notes that are played as well as the tempo of your piece. Use the simple grid to pick notes to be played and drag the bar below to set the speed. The song endlessly loops, but if you are clever you can mingle the start and end of your song so that it sounds like one long repetitive chorus. For a technology gifted but musically deficient individual such as myself getting the perfect tune has prove quite addictive.

Feeling uninspired? Hit "P" to hear a serious of random arraignments.

Zip Bear Town - Today's Time Waster

Ok, Zip Bear Town isn't revolutionary. It's essentially just Mahjong with ultra-cute tiles and great Japanese sound effects but, that doesn't stop it from being so damned loveable.

The object of the game is just like a simplified Mahjong; match tiles to make them go away. The timer resets every time you make a match, and there is absolutely zero chance of pausing (until you beat a level) so, take the bathroom break now, before you become addicted start playing.

Thanks Victor!

Doodle- Today's time-waster

In the game Doodle you play the part of a stick figure. Your goal is to get to the checkered flag at the end of the board without being erased or attacked by one of the stray spiked balls. The first few levels of the game are pretty simple with nothing attacking you and are designed primarily for you to get the hang of controlling the stick figure. As the the levels progress you have to fight more eraser and the game gets more difficult.

Pac-Xon - Today's time-waster

Pax-Xon is a new take on your traditional Pac-man game. In the game you're a Pac man like character, and your goal is to cover 80% of the board in blue without touching a ghost. You do that by traveling across the screen drawing lines. If you enclose an area with lines that doesn't contain a ghost then that entire area turns blue, if a ghost touches your line in progress then you lose a life.

There are a couple of power-ups that can occur. Cherries make you move faster, Bananas make ghosts move slower, and ice cream will make ghosts stop all together. You can also turn the tables on the ghosts by eating a blinking circle which, much like the power pills in the corners of the original Pac Man, give you the goods and make your little muncher able to eat the ghosts.

[Thanks E.J.!]

Blueprint - Today's time-waster

In Blueprint your goal is to get your ball to the target. To do that you move around the provided pieces to create a path for the ball to go in. There are 28 different puzzles to choose from and even the easier ones are pretty challenging. Puzzle pieces include pipes, triangles, treadmills, half-pipes, and a few nudges that will shoot your ball in a certain direction.

A few tips: You can use the outside of the pipes as well as the inside, and the ball will bounce off a wall if it hits it hard enough. It's much harder than it looks!

Double Wires- Today's Time Waster

Double Wires is a Spiderman type game where your only goal is to not fall down. You have two extendable wires that are released by clicking your mouse on the area you want tem to connect to. The man has a bit of a swing to him, so you have to watch out for missing your target or moving so quick that you have nothing else to grab onto. Simple, but addictive.

Draw Play - Today' time waster

The idea behind Draw Play is fairly simple: create a line for your mummy to walk on that gets it to the flag. You draw your line with your mouse and control your mummy using the arrow keys on your keyboard. The game starts off pretty easy with your mummy in the bottom left hand corner of the screen and the flag in the top right, with nothing standing in your way. As the game progresses though you are faced with spikes and rotating objects that make getting to the flag a little more difficult. There's no time limit and no set amount of lives, so you can literally be stuck on the same level all day.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
