Thumbstrips - great way to see and track your search results

ThumbStrips is a Firefox add-on which allows you to see your search results in the form of a filmstrip at the bottom of your screen. This is way handy since the alternative is peeling your eyes on your history view and stabbing at a string of single line text results, which for whatever reason, don't get you what you were looking for.

When you download ThumbStrips, it loads an icon in your toolbar and your status bar. When you want to start using ThumbStrips, you just click on the icon and it will load.

While it doesn't take a lot of page space, you can hide ThumbStrips (and it will still record your search results) by clicking an arrow icon. You can also press a button to make ThumbStrips stop recording your search results (which will keep it a little more private).

There's a way to share your ThumbStrips on the web -- just choose the "share on innovation.intuit.com" option when you save a ThumbStrip, and then anyone with a web browser can see what you saw and saved.

ThumbStrips has a tendency to slow down Gmail, as well as some other Ajax sites. There is a quick fix for Gmail by going to https://www.gmail.com/ instead of http://www.gmail.com/. It's a nice little work-around,
since ThumbStrips ignores secure sites (https instead of http), and because Google allows you to see Gmail both securely and unsecurely. While you're there, you can update your bookmarks to do the same.

Developed by Intuit's Innovation Labs (think Quickbooks), ThumbStrips system requirements are Firefox 2.0 or later, PC or Mac.

Download and let us know what you think of Thumbstrips - thumbs up or down?

Speed up Firefox with Firetune...

... if you use Windows and don't mind installing a third-party, standalone application.

FireTune is not a Firefox extension. It's a downloadable app - for Windows only - that "tunes" Firefox depending on your computer's speed and internet connection. You give FireTune some information about your setup, and it adjusts the browser's settings accordingly.
Firetune

The big question for me, though, is why anyone would go to the trouble of installing FireTune, when the extension Fasterfox includes the same functionality and more. I have yet to uncover any features in FireTune that aren't present in Fasterfox; and Fasterfox includes other perks in addition to speed, such as blocking Flash-initiated pop-up windows. So far, the only benefit I can see to FireTune is that it apparently supports Firefox 2.0 - which, of course, still hasn't been officially released.

Look out for Firefox 2.0 launching tomorrow

firefox 2.0 launch
Hot on the heels of Microsoft releasing Internet Explorer 7 last week, Mozilla is releasing Firefox 2.0. The final version of the browser will be launched on Tuesday. The new Firefox 2.0 is said to be basically the same as the Release Candidate 3 (RC3) version which is available as of Monday on Mozilla's website.

Some of Firefox 2.0's features include:
  • Theme and user interface update, including prettier glowing buttons.
  • Phishing Protection
  • Search term suggestions
  • Search engine manager
  • Firefox will open all pages in new tabs instead of new windows
  • Session Restore to resume browsing
  • Web feed subscriptions
  • Spell checking
To help spread the Firefox love, Firefox fans can get badges, buttons, and email signatures at Spread Firefox, getting credit each time someone clicks on links from your buttons. Don't forget about the Firefox party as well! There are 367 official parties happening worldwide, with over 3229 registered party goers. If you want to host your own Firefox party, sign up at www.Firefoxparty.com. And yes, you can also get the official t-shirt there.

Who is getting ready their mouse finger ready to click on the official Firefox 2.0 download link tomorrow? And will this new release beat out IE7?

UPDATE: As Clay pointed out in the comments, he has come across a secret location where version 2.0 install files are hiding, waiting to be unleashed tomorrow!

Firefox 2.0 alpha 2 released

Mozilla has released a 2nd alpha version of Firefox 2.0. As usual, this release is not recommended for any kind of serious use, but if you're salivating at some of the new version's features, check out what has been incorporated in this 2nd development milestone:
  • Links default to opening in new tabs, not new windows
  • Close buttons now appear on every tab, and the close behavior is slightly different
  • Inline spell checking in text boxes (Works well, though apparently not on all sites yet)
  • Automatic restoration of your browsing session if there is a crash
  • Search suggestions now appear in the search box auto-complete for Google and Yahoo!
  • New search plugin manager for removing and re-ordering search engines
  • Improved support for previewing and subscribing to web feeds
  • New microsummaries feature for bookmarks (Really interesting new feature)
  • New Add-Ons manager improves the user interface for managing extensions and themes
  • Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
  • New search service that supports Sherlock and OpenSearch engines
  • Support for SVG text using svg:textPath
A mouthful, I know. I typed this post using this development version (Bon Echo, as they call it) on Mac OS X and I have to say, it's nice so far. Of course, none of my extensions were compatible, and I highly recommend backing up your Firefox app support folder before testing this, no matter what OS you're using. When I tried the last Bon Echo development version, it rendered my support folder incompatible with the latest stable release of Firefox. Just another one of those hazards of playing with dev editions.

If you want more details of this release, check out its download page and Mozilla's release notes.

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
