Google's CEO Eric Schmidt is dreaming about free cell phones. Schmidt said that he definitely sees a future where consumers who accept to watch targeted advertising on their mobile phones, will in turn get them for free. As advertising is starting to hit the mobile market with consumers spending large amount of time talking, texting, and using the mobile Internet, this new form of mobile advertising makes it highly viable. This is a great option for people. Why not offer free phones and usage for targeted ads? What do you think? Would you grab a free phone for listening to, watching, or receiving text ads?Posts with tag EricSchmidt
Google sees the future, and its all about free cell phones

Just say no to data lock-in! That's what Google CEO Eric Schmidt said at San Francisco's Web 2.0 conference earlier this week. "If you look at the historical large company behavior, they ultimately do things to protect their business practices or monopoly or what have you, against the choice of the users," Schmidt said. "The more we can, for example, let users move their data around, never trap the data of an end user, let them move it if they don't like us, the better." He said that making it easy for users to leave at any time and take their data with them keeps the company on its toes, and that other software companies should adopt a similar policy. He also said that Google's ever-expanding corpus of web-based office programs isn't "an office suite" per se and that Google isn't trying to replace Microsoft's ubiquitous Office.Google-Intuit QuickBooks partnership rumored
Google and Intuit have been rumored to be entering into a partnership. The news will supposedly be dropped at 1:15pm Pacific time. Michael Arrington dropped some news today that Google could be integrating into QuickBooks 2007. This would supposedly allow small business users to add listings of their businesses to Google Maps, and create and manage AdWords campaigns, as well as post listings on Google Base. The conference is scheduled for 1:15pm Pacific, with Google CEO Eric Schmidt, and Intuit President and CEO Steve Bennett speaking on the partnership.
Stay tuned as the news unfolds.
UPDATE: Google has in fact announced a strategic partnership with Intuit, which is designed to help small business owners promote themselves online. The new partnership will see Google's services built into most Quickbooks 2007 products.
Small business owners will have the option to list their businesses on Google Maps, create and manage Google AdWords campaigns, and post their products for sale on Google Base. The Google integrated Quickbooks 2007 will be in stores this fall. No word on the 2007 pricing as of yet.
Partnering Google products with Intuits small business products is going to make some small businesses very happy at realizing the potential that Google's products have for the bottom line.

Google to Offer Free Novels
Google is planning to offer Google Book Search users the ability to download and print selected classic out of copyright novels as PDF files for free. Google's CEO Eric Schmidt says he believes that this project will introduce many people to books that they would never have normally discovered. The free novel program started life as Google's giant initiative to put books online in a searchable format. Through an outside project known as Gutenberg, volunteers have been scanning public domain books for many years to text files that can in turn be used for printing or reading. Google is acquiring this information, and will allow users to access these books in a print ready format.
UPDATE: To find out-of-copyright books that you can download, select the "Full view" radio button when you search on books.google.com
Current available titles include:
- Ferriar's The Bibliomania
- A futurist from 1881's 1931: A Glance at the Twentieth Century
- Aesop's Fables
- Shakespeare's Hamlet
- Abbott's Flatland
- Hugo's Marion De Lorme
- Dunant's Eine Erinnerung an Solferino

Google CEO joins Apple Board of Directors
Apple announced yesterday that Google CEO Eric Schmidt has joined the ranks on Apple's Board of Directors. "Apple is one of the companies in the world that I most admire," said Eric Schmidt. "I'm really looking forward to working with Steve and Apple's board to help with all of the amazing things Apple is doing." Likewise, Steve Jobs praised Schmidt, saying, "Eric is obviously doing a terrific job as CEO of Google, and we look forward to his contributions as a member of Apple's board of directors."Just imagine the outcomes in the marketplace now that these extra ties have been made between Google and Apple. These two companies full of innovation and market domination can together create some very cutting edge products and services--I wonder what Microsoft thinks about this news.
Google Doubles Profits
Google has more than doubled its profits since last year at this time. The doubling of profits has been said by Google to be from the launch of some very impressive products and services into the marketplace.Google's profits went from $342 million last year, to $721 million this year. This was a historically slow quarter, and Google's growth in the quarter had even shocked Eric Schmidt at a press conference into saying "Google grew at an impressive pace during a seasonally slow quarter".
Google's growth is a stark change to the recent news of Yahoo's fall in the market due to its delayed launch and development of its new ad search service.
Eric Schmidts April Fools office furniture
Back in the day when a young Eric Schmidt (with rather large glasses) was a manager at Sun Microsystems, his employees thought it would be rather hilarious if they were to exchange a VW beetle with his office furnishings. Giraffes showed up at his house, and gave him papers to a car. Thinking it was a weird joke, Schmidt left for work. Upon arriving at work, there was the car. It had been disassembled, and brought into his office. Check out the video after the flip.

Google does not support click fraud
Apparently there was a little chatter around the blogosphere lately about how Google supports click fraud. Well, then business product manager for trust and security over at Google cleared some things up on Google's corporate blog.Shurman Ghosemajumder, the business product manager for trust and security at Google spoke up about the issue at hand, and stated that a blogger quoted Eric Schmidt a little twistedly when he recently spoke about the click fraud issue.
When asked about click fraud at a Stanford economics event in March, Schmidt said there has been some talk about click fraud being a potential threat to the entire advertising business model, and he was wondering what people thoughts were, and if there was an economic solution, instead of a technical one. Eric was answering hypothetically, and was not describing Google's approach to click fraud. Eric went on to discuss the economic issues that can slow down fraud, dropping the price that the advertiser is willing to pay for potentially bad clicks. Thus, self correcting the actual real ad price.
The whole time during the presentation, he kept stating that Google does not take this approach.
You can find a video of the presentation at hand here.
Schmidt: No Google Browser plans
Eric Schmidt says Google has no plans to develop its own web browser, according to Reuters. During a conference call with Wall Street analysts today, the Google CEO said, "It looks like people have some good browsers choices already. We would not build a browser for the fun of building a browser." Speculation that Google would release its own web browser with its seach, e-mail, and other products integrated has been widespread for years and I doubt this will quash them entirely (if not for fun, Eric, how 'bout for money?). Anyway, we can still speculate about Google OS, can't we?[Via Digg]
