FlexTK Makes File Management Easy

If you're like us, your hard drive is anything but tidy. That's because us power users can't be bothered to keep things organized - there are just too many awesome things out there to download, extract, and forget about because half of them turn out to be garbage.

FlexTK for Windows helps make short work of cleaning up after yourself, offering a full complement of file management tools in one handy package. Folder sync, duplicate file search, temp file cleanup, storage utilization, search, and an advanced organization module are all included. Navigation is handled beautifully in an explorer-like manner, tweaked by the addition of breadcrumbs and a "bookmarks" pane that allows you to quickly link your favorite locations.

Double Killer: Hunt down and remove duplicate files

If duplicate files are your resident pest, then DoubleKiller is your exterminator. This free program from Big Bang Enterprises (we're not making this stuff up!) will scan your computer or selected directory for duplicate files and allow you to easily remove them from your system.

If permanently deleting files makes your neck sweat, not to worry: DoubleKiller protects you from any mistaken or dumb deletions. First of all, DoubleKiller ensures the accuracy of duplicate files by checking the name, size, date, and CRC32-checksum of your files. You can also limit scans to particular masks and exclude files matching certain masks (by default, DoubleKiller excludes any .dll, .sys, .vxd, and .inf files).

Simple to use and easy to customize (not to mention free!), DoubleKiller is the ideal program to do your duplicate dirty work. Windows only.

Tidy up your Linux installation with FSlint

We all eventually accumulate "lint" on our computers whether it's in the form of empty directories, duplicate files, or temporary files. FSlint (Linux only) serves as a virtual lint trap that lets you remove specific types of lint to keep our Linux installation humming along. To use FSlint, simply add the directories you wish to search (/home, /usr, etc.), select the type of lint for which you're searching, and click "Find." FSlint will return its results showing file size and paths for your particular search.

From within the search results window you can select files and delete them, or you can save them to a different location (good for backing up files before you "accidentally" remove your xorg.conf file). FSlint also will find bad symlinks, name clashes, bad names (e.g. invalid characters in file names), and installed packages. Distribution-specific installation instructions are available on the FSlint website, but for the Ubuntu readers, simply type sudo apt-get install fslint from your Terminal prompt.

CloneSpy cleans up duplicate files

If you're heavily involved with digital photography or have a large music collection on your computer, you may wonder whether you've got duplicate files laying around that you could afford to turf. While you can try searching for duplicate filenames using a number of tools including the search functionality that is built in to Windows, to truly know if files are duplicates you need a tool that will examine the bits, and see if they match completely.

CloneSpy is a little utility that will do just that for you, and it provides enough options to make sure that when you finally do decide to delete some duplicates, it's the right ones that actually get deleted. I was able to clean a a couple of hundred megabytes off of my laptop's drive between duplicate photos and music files.

DupKiller - find and remove duplicate files

Okay, I'll admit it - this is one of those utilities that scares me a little. While I find it amazing to note that I have over 300 Megs of duplicated files in my file system, I haven't got the nerve to start deleting the duplicates for fear that I might break something. However, that doesn't mean that DupKiller, a tool whose whole purpose revolves around removing duplicate files, isn't worth having on my system.

Even though I don't want to globally remove all duplicated files from my system, I do want to be able to go through specific folders (like my music file or picture folders) and remove duplicate files. For that type of task, DupKiller is exactly what the doctor ordered. Just don't get sucked in to removing all duplicated files from your system - it's just not worth it to see if it ends up breaking anything.
