Doodle.ch: elegant, no-fuss scheduling utility gets a Facebook app

Doodle.ch is a straightforward, highly-usable tool for scheduling events or making decisions with a group. It generates polls that the members of your group can use to fill in their availability for an event, or even simpler polls that let you make a list of options (What should we serve at dinner? Which movie should we see?) and see which ones work for your group members. We last wrote about Doodle two years ago, and it's gotten a lot better since then, so I thought it was time for an update

You can now export your Doodle appointments to other calendars (Outlook, Google Calendar, etc.). Some power user options have been added, like hidden polls and an ifneedbe option. The latest new feature is a Facebook application, which brings the power of Doodle into a space where a bunch of people you know probably already hang out. Now you don't even have to get people to wander over to a Doodle URL to fill out your poll. How much easier can it get?

Sketch 4 Secs - super hard Timewaster

Sketch 4 Secs is an online Java game that asks you to try to replicate doodles using your mouse in 4 seconds or less. Drawing with the mouse is only ever sort of fun, so this game suffers from that knock right away. But worse, it's actually ridiculously hard. The first two levels aren't too bad, but level 3 asks you to try to doodle a pair of headphones with many lines.

Give it a try and let us know if we're out to lunch here. Fun, or freakishly hard?

Make a note on any website with Firedoodle

Notes, doodles, marks, comments; They're how we remember things. Firedoodle brings notes right into the browser window, and puts them squarely on top of webpages.

Firedoodle, a Firefox extension, will enable any page visited in the Firefox browser to turn into a whiteboard where notes, additions and comments can be made easily.

Firedoodle also acts as a bookmarking tool. Any page that you leave your mark on gets archived and can be easily found through highlighting or placemarks. This will only be activated when you register for free on the Firedoodle site. If you choose not to register, your marks will disappear when you exit Firefox.

This is great for Designers and Developers to make small comments, feedback, and doodles for feedback, or even a surfer keeping tabs on something they enjoy.

Doodle: Schedule meetings by committee

Sometimes scheduling meetings and get-togethers sucks. The difficulty of finding a date and time that works best for everyone increases exponentially with the number of people involved. Doodle aims to simplify things. It's a simple web-based polling app that lets you list possible dates and times for an event and then survey all of the interested parties. When you create a poll, you're given a link to send to everyone--no sign-up required!--and another link to keep track of the results. Those you invite just enter their name, click on the dates that work for them, and submit. Doodle then tells you which date and time works best and how many people can attend then. Fast, free and easy!

New Yahoo! Messenger Plugins rolled out

The new beta version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (version 8) lets users attach special use plugins. There were several available when the beta version was rolled out and today several more were made available in the Yahoo! Application Gallery.

Yahoo! Scribbler - It does just what the name says, it lets you scribble. When you and you chatting friend launch it, you can collaborate on a whiteboard. It also lets you drop in a photo from Flickr and doodle on it. And, if your work is worth it, you can save and store it to your Flickr account.

iTunes Remote - Erm, it's a remote for iTunes. Requires iTunes.

Yahoo! News - This plugin was one of the initial offerings. Maybe this is a new version? Gallery listing says it's only hours old. Lets you quickly browse news categories and zoom in on stories within Messenger.

Yahoo! Sports Gamechannel - This is my personal favorite. It lets you see the current US Major League Baseball stats and action within a smartly designed space. Cute animation and easy to read text tells you everything about the game being viewed. Also includes current scores and stats around the league. This was released a while back and is presumably an updated version. Lets hope it handle US football just as well.

And, by the way, plugins work in the Windows version of Y! Messenger but not the Mac version... yet.

Draw all over Google Maps with quickmaps

quickmaps is a cool new Google Maps-based web service (or mashup, if you prefer) that lets you get really creative with your Google Maps. Quickmaps gives you a bunch of tools, including a couple dozen markers, line and doodle tools for drawing, and text labels that you can place anywhere on a Google map. Drawing is done with the mouse, and markers and text labels are conveniently drag-and-drop. There's a lot of ways you could quickmaps, but the front page has a few suggestions: "drawing a map to your house, sketching out a cycling or hiking route, or telling everyone where you saw the grizzly bear." quickmaps is super-easy to use, but I was frustrated that in order to remove "doodled" lines you must remove them one segment at a time, which gets old fast. Maps that you create can be saved and shared with your friends. Registration is optional, but if you don't register you can't go back and edit maps that you've saved. And, of course, once you save your map you can embed it in your web site and share it with your friends. I have to say that apart from the doodle-removal issue, quickmaps is one of the slickest applications of the Google Maps API I've seen yet.

Gloodle - doodle with globs

Gloodle is s strange little drawing application. You don't really draw with it, you doodle with little globs. It sort of reminds me of a those spirograph toys we played with as children, in that it creates images that are identical in a number of planes. There's nothing really useful you can do with Gloodle other than play with it, but then again that's fine by me.
