How to downgrade a Dell Axim X50v the hard way

Dell Axim X50v WM06Last week we let you know about an amazing hack that brings Windows Mobile 6 to the Dell Axim X50v. What makes this hack so amazing is the fact that Dell has no plans that we're aware of to offer Windows Mobile 6 for this discontinued PDA. In fact, Dell's Windows Mobile 5.0 "upgrade" for the X50v was pretty widely panned for being buggy and slow.

Windows Mobile 6 runs better than Windows Mobile 5.0 on the X50v. But there are still some problems. After a week of playing with Windows Mobile 6 on our crash test unit, we got tired of occasional slow downs and the constant need to reinstall programs that had mysteriously stopped working. So we decided to downgrade to Windows Mobile 2003SE, the operating system that originally shipped with the Axim X50v, which runs like a dream.

Here's how it's supposed to work. First, you reinstall Windows Mobile 5.0 using a Dell utility. Then you use another Dell utility to reinstall Windows Mobile 2003SE. If only it were so simple. After the jump we'll tell you about some of the hurdles we faced and how we overcame them.

Dell Axim X50v gets unofficial Windows Mobile 6 upgrade

Dell Axim X50v Windows Mobile 6 ClassicDespite rumors that Dell might be working on a Windows Mobile-based phone, the company is pretty much out of the Windows Mobile business for now. And that leaves Axim X50/51 users pretty much on their own if they want to upgrade their devices from Windows Mobile 5.0 to Windows Mobile 6.

Overall, that might not be such a bad thing. Dell did an infamously poor job offering X50 users an upgrade from WM2003SE to Windows Mobile 5.0. The upgraded units ran slower and had more bugs than units running the older operating system.

But where Dell dropped the ball, the hacker community steps in. And after attempting to improve Dell's Windows Mobile 5.0 installation, one enterprising member of the XDA Developers forum has gone on to port Windows Mobile 6 to the Dell Axim X50v. Bear in mind, this upgrade is only for the VGA model. If you've got a Dell Axim X50 with a 320 x 240 pixel screen, this ROM will not run. Oh yeah, and installing any unofficial operating system upgrades like this could leave your PDA in an unbootable state. So this hack is not for the feint of heart.

That said, X50vs do seem to run much faster with Windows Mobile 6 than Windows Mobile 5.0. And you get upgraded versions of Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, Outlook, and other programs.

Update: If you've upgraded your X50v and are scratching your head trying to figure out how to revert back to Windows Mobile 5.0 or Windows Mobile 2003SE, check out our article on downgrading from Windows Mobile 6.

Windows Mobile tools for commuters and travelers - Mobile Minute

Back when I was a full time commuter (spending almost as much time on the train every day as I did in the office), I spent a lot of time and energy converting my Windows Mobile PDA from a simple productivity tool into a one-stop entertainment shop. While you could buy a fancy phone that will be obsolete in a year and sign up for an expensive data plan so that you can watch the occasional YouTube clip, my weapon of choice was the off-line media viewer.

My commute is now much shorter, but every time I go away for the weekend or take a vacation I'm glad I spent so much time tracking down these tools.

AvantGoNews/eBook readers

During the early years of Windows CE, AvantGo was the undisputed champion of mobile web browsing software. The service allowed you to save mobile versions of selected web pages to your device's memory and catch up on news from The New York Times, CNet, and hundreds of other sources on the go. Every time you sync your device, your subscriptions are updated.

But the software hasn't been updated in years, and for many users it has become obsolete. While offering up hundreds of websites was sufficient a few years ago, today AvantGo's offerings seem terribly limited.

Forumwarz - a potentially offensive time waster

I pwn UAfter spending the better part of an hour on Forumwarz I still can't decide if it's just sick or if it's kind of fun. It's a bit like a car wreck on the highway. I know I shouldn't be looking but I can't quite turn away.

It's sick, it's twisted, it's the internet on it's worst level and darn it, it's kind of fun. At least for a little while.

Forumwarz is a parody role-playing game that takes place on the internet - or at least the Forumwarz version of it. Your goal is to complete missions that are given to you through a mock up of GoogleTalk called Sentrillion.

Your first "friend" is ShallowEsophagus who begins giving you missions to pwn various forums by being a troll. Depending on the character type you are assigned at start up, you have tools like drooling on the keyboard or bashing your head on the keyboard that you can use to destroy forum threads and eventually, pwn a forum.

Future missions involve buying illegal software from the Russians, pwning more difficult forums and other internet oddness.

Completing missions gives you cash, called Flezz in game, and items that you can pawn or use in other missions. The game is NOT for those easily offended. It's crass, coarse and there are frequent f-bombs in the fake chat sessions.

This is also a game for a more mature audience as it requires you to shop at the Drugs R Fun store to get various concoctions to improve your playing, engage in certain cyber activities to get more Flezz and just generally use a more adult perspective.

If you can get past that, here are the more enjoyable and time-wasting aspects.
