XP Syspad centralizes access to Windows XP functions

If you're looking for a slightly more efficient way to access the numerous built-in features Windows XP provides, Xtort's XP Syspad may be of interest to you.

The program's main window provides basic process information and menus that link to just about every OS function you'd ever be looking for. Examples? MSconfig, sysedit, control userpasswords2, iexpress (self-extracting package creator), services.msc.

These are things I access all the time, so I've gotten used to using win+r and typing the application's name to launch it, so firing up Syspad is saving me more than a couple keystrokes.

It can also show and hide desktop icons, recover XP and Office product keys, display your current IP address, clean temp files, quickly access system folders, much more. The list installed programs is a nice alternative to add/remove programs: it loads in a split second and allows you to launch uninstallers as well as remove items from the programs list.

Add folders and applications to "My Computer"

Folder2MyPC
Do you hate cluttering up your desktop with dozens of folder and application icons? Folder2MyPC will help you clean up your Windows desktop by cramming them in your "My Computer" menu. Of course, this is the virtual equivalent of sweeping your dirt under the rug. But hey, whatever it takes to impress the house guests, right?

Operation is pretty simple. Open up Folder2MyPC and select "create folder" or "create application." Then browse to find the folder or application you want to add to your "My Computer" screen. You can also add items as submenus in the Control Panel. Click the "create" button and you're all set.

Folder2MyPC is freeware. Version 1.9 is Windows Vista only, although earlier versions of the application work with Windows 2000/XP.

DreamHost redesigns web control panel

Host to many, many a website, DreamHost decided it was time to bring some new hotness to their web admin control panel. Gone are the dark blue roll-out headers in favor of a much lighter AJAX + full CSS design, with subtle gradients and even a pseudo-tag area under the Home > Overview section (we only rank it as 'pseudo' due to its tag-like appearance, but rightful lack of actual tagging features). Some may question why such a robust new system is necessary for a bunch of web admin nerds, but we say bring on the well-designed, über-functional CP any day.

A post at the DreamHost blog explains all that is new about the redesigned CP, and hints that some truly new features are still to come.

Vista startup sound optional after all

Windows Vista startup soundAwhile back I reported that Microsoft was considering making it impossible to disable the Windows Vista startup sound, short of physically turning off your speakers. I'm still getting comments on that post. Happily, Microsoft has reversed its position. In a post to the Windows Vista Team Blog product manager Nick White writes, "We heard you loud and clear when it came to discussing our plans to include a default start-up sound that plays as you boot-up Windows Vista: you said you wanted to have the opportunity to mute it if and when you felt it necessary." Going forward, Vista will have a (relatively) easy-to-find option in the Control Panel to disable the startup sound. Thanks for listening, Microsoft!

The World's Hardest Game 2.0 - Time Waster

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do. Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game. The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...
