Google to integrate Talk into Orkut

google talk integration into OrkutIt seems like Google could be working on integrating Google Talk into their social networking tool, Orkut. The Google Talk and Orkut teams are rumored to be in the final stages of the developmental integration, with news of the rollout this week. Google came to the decision to integrate the two tools when they noticed that users of Orkut quite frequently had their Talk application open. Through the new Google Talk integration, Orkut users will be able to voice chat or instant message other users immediately. Users of Orkut, will also have their friends list show up in their GTalk users buddy list. Maybe this will pump up Orkut, and move it on up to competing with the likes of MySpace.

Trillian tip: Tear off some buddies

Trillian Pro mini-buddy-listI stumbled across a cool feature in Trillian Pro today completely by accident. I was trying to rearrange some contacts when I accidentally dragged one of them outside of my buddy list, which created a second, mini-buddy-list. I'm sure this isn't new to everybody, but it's new to me, and I thought it was cool. Just click and drag any contact, meta-contact, or contact group off of your buddy list and drop it elsewhere on your desktop, and now those contacts will be available in a little collapsible, dockable list of their own. I realize that half the reason for using Trillian is to get rid of multiple buddy lists, but this seems handy for keeping certain contacts available while you've got the rest of the buddy list hidden away. I'm not sure if the free version of Trillian has this feature--can anybody confirm?

Yahoo! and Microsoft finally connect their IM networks together

Yahoo! IM and Windows Live Messenger

File this under 'It's about bloody time...'

Way back in October 2005, Yahoo! and Microsoft announced they were going to connect their IM networks together. It's been a while since then, with little communication, but you can now join the public beta program(s) that allow you to add people from either network to either client.

You need the latest version of the client - Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger v8 Beta and you'll also need to sign-up for the betas, depending on which client you want to use:

Yahoo! Client beta
Windows Live Client beta

Then, all you need to do is add your buddies to the client you prefer (mine is Yahoo! Messenger) and it'll go through the process of connecting you up. Once connected, you'll be able to see Presence, Status Messages, Nudge and Buzz, send emoticons and even Offline Messages - not too shabby for the initial release. As you can see from the picture, both clients indicate what network you Buddy is using.

Kudos to the Windows Live Messenger team for having a blog that posts more details about the integration (Yahoo! - where's your's??)

Graveyard Shift - zombie-busting Time Waster

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet. They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...
