• Lesser known weapons to trick out your malware arsenal
  You probably know all the big names in antivirus, anti-spyware behavior. But just because companies like Norton, Symantec, McAfee, Spybot, and AdAware get all the attention doesn't mean they're the only games in town. We have a roundup of some of our favorite anti-malware applications you probably haven't heard of, but should definitely check out.
• 10 tools to pimp out your FriendFeed
  Apparently we've been feeling all listy this week, because in addition to a list of anti-malware tools, we published a list of 10 tools to spruce up your FriendFeed page. Whether you want to filter the info that shows up in FriendFeed, or to read FriendFeed on your mobile phone, we've got you covered.
• VLC Media Player 0.9.0 pre-release adds Last.fm support and more
  VLC is already one of the most full-featured video players around. And it happens to be free and open source to boot. This week the developers pushed out a preview version of VLC 0.9.0 with one new killer feature: integrated support for streaming music service Last.fm.
• Ask DLS: Web browsing for the color blind
  Between 8 and 10 percent of males have some degree of color-blindness, but surprisingly few web designers take this into account. If you have problems distinguishing colors on web pages, you might want to check out the Colorblind Web Page Filter, which attempts to adjust the color scheme of any web site to make it easier to read based on the type of colorblindness you experience.
• Opera Mobile 9.5 beta released
  Opera is doing its part to keep Windows Mobile users from throwing jealous glances at their iPhone-owning friends. Opera Mobile 9.5 beta hit the streets this week, and it offers a Mobile Safari-like drag, drop and zoom interface, super-fast page rendering, and other features to make browsing on a handheld device just a little bit more pleasant.

• Plurk on the Desktop: What's already out there, and what's next
  We hear you loud and clear. Many Download Squad readers are tired of reading about micro-blogigng service Twitter. So we promise, from now on it's all Plurk, al the time. But seriously, Twitter may be the biggest name in micro-blogging, but it's not the only game in town. This week we took a look at some of the desktop clients for accessing Plurk, the new kid on the block who's already making a big splash. Is that a mixed metaphor?
• Truecrypt updates to version 6, hides your subversive plots even better!
  Popular, open source encryption application Truecrypt got a major update this week. The new version adds support for multi-core CPUs, speedier encryption, and the ability to encypt your entire OS or hide system volumes on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.
• Glubble vs. Kidzui: Good kid browsers, silly names
  So you've tried telling your kid to stay away from the darker corners of the interwebs where strangers keep offering them candy and that's not working. Why not try replacing Firefox or Internet Explorer with a kid-friendly web browser? We have all the details on two of the most popular browsers for the under 10 set.
• Sending attachments with Gmail is just a click away - gAttach!
  Ever wish you could change your default email application in WIndows to a web-based email service like Gmail? Now you can. 'Nuff said.
• Windows XP ain't the only OS retiring this year - Goodbye Windows 3.11
  Sure, Windows XP may be grabbing all the headlines this summer, what with Microsoft officially ending sales of the venerable, but durable OS. But did you know that an even older, if slightly less stable version of Windows was still available through the Windows embedded channel? Come November, though, you'll no longer be able to find Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. Quick, somebody start a petition!
• All-in-one driver solution with DriverMax
  You back up the important files and software on your computer. But what about your drivers? DriverMax is a simple, free Windows utility that makes a backup of all the drivers instaled on your system. Whether you need to reinstall Windows or just want to make sure you have a backup in case anything happens, DriverMax can help.

• Whipping your website into shape
  You run a small business. And you have a small website. And no offense, but it kind of looks like you let your 6 year old design it. We've collected some of our favorite tips for making your web site a thing of beauty. Oh yeah, and it'll be far easier for people to find what they're looking for too.
• Do you know what your hard drive has been up to?
  CrystalDiskInfo is a handy little Windows utility that spits out all sorts of information about your hard drive state, including its temperature, the number of power cycles, and even how many hours you've been running the drive. So if you run this free application every now and again and save the data, when your hard drive inevitably fails, at least you'll have an idea why.
• Mozilla breaks non-existent world record, nobody cares
  Look, we hear what you're saying. Mozilla scored a world record for the largest number of downloads in a 24 hour period when the company launched Firefox 3. That's be pretty awesome, except nobody had ever bothered to compete in this category before. So it's not exactly shocking that Mozilla holds the record now, is it? And no, we have no plans to fire Drew Olanoff for writing this post which has been the subject of much debate.
• Windows XP goes by bye
  This week saw the retirement of Windows XP. Kind of. Microsoft will no longer let end users pick up a standalone license. But you can still get a copy of the venerable operating system if you really want it. Some of them are even legal!
• Trillian turns 8, no astra beta birthday gift quite yet
  Multi-protocol chat client Trillian turned 8 years old this week. The program has been downloaded over 35 million times so far. And while we were crossing our fingers hoping that the new version, called Trillian Astra, might poke its head out for the anniversary, the upcoming version of Trillian is still in private alpha.
• Windows Steady State bulletproofs your system
  Ever wish you could throw caution to the wind and click on obviously dangerous links, download files that are likely to contain trojans, and otherwise muck up your system without actually mucking up your system? Windows Steady State creates a large cache file that essentially lets you save all of your activity in a temporary location. When you reboot your system, anything you did while running Steady State should be removed.

We'd normally write something mildly clever in this spot, but to be honest, it's been a long week and we're just too tired to be clever. So umm, a man walks into a bar. He says ouch. See what we mean? Anyway, have some of our favorite posts from the last week:

• Help! Windows cannot open this file
  Ever download a shiny new file from the internet only to realize you have no idea how to open it, make it run, or do whatever it is it's supposed to do? We've compiled a roundup of some of the best Windows applications for opening pretty much any file type. Make sure to check out the comments, because it turns out y'all provided a veritable treasure trove of additional suggestions.
• aTunes: Cross-platform open source media player
  Looking for a media player capable of handling pretty much anything you can throw at it (except DRM)? aTunes might just fit the bill. And it's open soruce and cross-platform to boot. There's a native Windows version, but since the application is Java based, you can also run it on OS X and Unix/Linux. Oh, and did we mention it displays lyrics and has a karaoke mode?
• PlanningWiz: Plan and share room layouts
  Whether you're moving into a new place or trying to figure out how to better utilize the space you have, odds are PlanningWiz can save you an awful lot of time and graphing paper. This web-based app makes it easy to set your room dimensions and then start figuring out where to put the couch, table, entertainment system and missile silo.
• Tofu makes on-screen reading actually bearable
  Computer monitors are a lot better than they used to be, but let's face it, even though we spend all day staring at a computer screen we have a hard time reading large amounts of text on a computer screen. That pretty much rules out reading eBooks. But Tofu is a desktop app for Mac that takes large chunks of text and breaks them up into shorter, more easily digestable segments so you can tackle War and Peace without all the eye strain.
• Inline PDF viewing for Firefox 3? There's a plugin for that
  While the Safari web browser features support for inline PDF viewing, if you happen across a PDF online while using the Mac version of Firefox 3, you have two choices: download the PDF or install this plugin. Nuff said.
• Sync your Google Reader, NewsGator feeds with RSS Bandit
  There's a new alpha version of RSS Bandit, a desktop RSS reader for Windows that adds one killer new feature: Support for synchronization with online feed readers like Google Reader and NewsGator. In other words, you can configure RSS Bandit to not only import your feed list, but to mark items as read in your online reader once you've read them using the desktop reader, or vice versa.

The big story this week was undoubtedly the launch of Firefox 3. And we covered the heck out of it. But while Mozilla's little browser was busy grabbing headlines, there was plenty of other news. Here are a few of our favorite (mostly) non-Firefox related stories:

• What to expect from Mozilla's mobile Firefox web browser
  OK, we promise, this is the last Firefox-related link of the roundup. But we got a chance to talk with Mozilla VP for Mobile Jay Sullivan this week and he gave us the a rundown of what we can expect from the upcoming mobile version of Firefox. For example, Mozilla is targeting Linux and Windows Mobile phones at first, but could develop a Symbian version soon as well.
• HELP! Windows cannot open this file
  Ever download a file from the internet only to discover that you have no idea what program you need to use to open it? We've got you covered with a roundup of software you can install on a Windows system to ensure that you can open pretty much any file you're likely to find.
• OpenSUSE 11.0 proves chameleons can take on herons any day
  Ubuntu gets a lot of attention for being a user-friendly Linux distribution for newbies, but the latest version of OpenSUSE is poised to give Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron a run for its money. It's fast, supports GNOME or KDE4, as well as the light weight Xfce interface, and comes with all the applications you'd expect from a modern Linux distro, including the latest stable version of OpenOffice.org.
• Giveaway: OpenSUSE 11 box set with all the trimmings
  Oh yeah, and we've got a special boxed edition of OpenSUSE 11 to give away. Follow the link for all the details and contest rules. The contest runs through Tuesday June 26th.
• Digg this Kevin Rose - Reddit goes completely open source
  Always wanted to develop your own Digg-killer? Now you can, using the source code for one of the most popular social news/bookmarking sites around. Reddit opened up its source code this week which lets anyone develop their own Reddit clones or applications designed to interface with the original web service.
• Qtrax launches free, legal, and limited P2P music app
  Remember when you could easily find and download any song on the internet just by firing up Napster or your favorite P2P music client? Yeah, we know there are still programs and P2P networks out there holding the free music torch. But you always run the risk of getting a nasty letter from the RIAA when you use those clients. That's not the case when you use Qtrax, a new P2P client that launched this week. What sets Qtrax apart from the competition is that the service only features 100% legal and free music. The service is supported by advertising and would be totally awesome if it weren't for two restrictions. First the software uses Windows Media DRM. Second, the music selection is still pretty pitiful.
• Skype 4.0 beta puts video front and center, takes over your screen
  Skype has released a new beta of its popular VoIP client for Windows. And for the first time, video seems like a primary feature and not an afterthought. The video window is larger and more prominent. But overall the client takes up far more screen real estate and starts in full screen mode by default. While you can certainly resize the window, it doesn't fit in the sidebar as easily as earlier versions, which makes it a bit more awkward to use if you're just looking to use the text chat or audio call features.

It's been a busy week at Download Squad HQ. We've been busy covering the releases of several new web browsers, updates to several operating systems, and we've been continuing our never-ending quest to find as many ways as humanly possible to waste time while using a computer.

• Firefox 3 is pretty much ready
  After years of working, testing, and tweaking, Mozilla plans to officially launch Firefox 3 on June 17th. This week saw the release of Firefox 3 RC3, which is basically identical to Firefox 3 RC2 if you're using Windows or Linux, but the latest version fixed a critical bug on Mac systems.
• Mozilla shows off Firefox mobile interface concept video
  But it's not all about desktop browsers over at Mozilla HQ. The developers of Firefox are also hard at work on a project to craft a mobile version of Firefox that will run on cellphones. The company unveiled a concept user interface this week that might make its way into the final release. Or it might not.
• Microsoft TownSquare: A social network for business communications
  Microsoft may own a stake in Facebook, but it looks like the company's not putting all of its social networking chickens in one basket. Microsoft is also working on a social network for internal use by businesses who want to faciliate communication and collaboration among employees.
• TidalTV: Web video doesn't get much more TV-like
  Tired of internet video looking more like video stuck on a web page than TV? TidalTV is a new video site that looks almost exactly like an interactive program guide from a cable or satellite network. And it features a combination of live video streams and on-demand programs from several networks including HGTV, National Geographic, and CBS.
• Viewzi visual search engine gives you a dozen ways to search
  Ever find yourself staring at Google Images wondering why it's so hard to find images? Viewzi can help. This highly customizable search engine lets you flip through images about a dozen different ways, and tries to predict which views will be the most helpful depending on your search terms. It's a bit overwhelming, but also extraordinarily cool.
• Opera desktop browser 9.5 is final - Take your stuff with you
  Mozilla's not the only company with a new web browser to promote. Opera 9.5 went gold this week, and the latest version of the browser is faster than ever, has a nifty new skin, and has a new Opera Link service that lets you sync your settings across browsers on multiple machines.
• HotPads shows real estate rents, foreclosure rates, and demographics heat maps
  HotPads is a real estate search engine with more eye andy than you can shake a stick at. Not that you typically shake sticks at real estate search engines. But HotPads lets you search by location, price, and number of bedrooms like any other real estate listing site. But HotPads also shows you heatmaps with information like the average rent, foreclosure rates, age, or income levels in a given area.
• Parallels for Mac hits 1,000,000 users
  No matter how much you love your Mac, the truth of the matter is that there are still some programs that are Windows only. So it's probably not surprising that Parallels, a program that lets you run Windows on a Mac without rebooting is so popular. Whether you use it on a daily basis or just on the rare occasion when you really want to fire up MS Paint, we're betting there's a decent chance you've got Parallels or another virtualization program if you've got a Mac.

Been so busy trying to figure out Steve Jobs would announce next week that you haven't had time to read the news this week? We'll save you some time. First, it's probably a new iPhone. Second, here are some of our favorite stories from the week that was:

• Wikia Search human powered search engine becomes useful
  Ever wish you could rearrange search results in Google? Well, you can't. But you can customize Wikia Search, the search engine from the makers of Wikipedia to your heart's content. Don't like the order of the search results? Just vote your preferred results up. In theory, this could be an excellent way to deal with the inadequacies of machine ranking. In practice, web publishers are just going to spend all day fighting for the top listings.
• VLC on the iPhone and iPod Touch? Yep
  The iPhone is a remarkable device that lets you make phone calls, surf the web, watch movies, and listen to music. But if you want to watch DiVX videos, listen to MP3 files, or use any number of other formats, you're out of luck. Or at least you were last week. Because this week, the open-source VLC media player was ported to the iPhone. And there was much rejoicing.
• As June 30th approaches, are you stocking up on Windows XP licenses?
  Microsoft has set a June 30th cutoff date for Windows XP sales. Sort of. While it won't be impossible to pick up a copy of the 6 year old operating system after that date, it will be a bit tougher. Since Windows Vista isn't exactly what we'd call popular, and Windows 7 is at least a year or two away, now might be a good time to pick up a spare Windows XP license in case you need to install the OS on a new computer.
• Ubuntu Netbook Remix gets real official
  Dozens of computer makers showed off new cheap mini-notebooks at the Computex trade show in Taipei this week. And while many of those "netbooks" run Windows XP or Vista, many more are running Linux. Canonical wants in on the action and is planning to release Ubuntu Netbook Remix later this year. It's basically a custom version of Ubuntu with a new program launcher designed for small screens and optimizations for the low-power Intel Atom CPU. Canonical showed off an early build of the system this week.
• Ever use Pandora? Ever use Pandora...on AIR?
  While there have been desktop clients that let you listen to streaming music service Pandora without a web browser for ages, the company finally released its own official client this week -- to mixed reviews. On the one hand, it's great that you can listen to music without having to launch a browser. On the other hand, the desktop client, based on Adobe AIR, is kind of bulky and feels more like a web service than a desktop application.
• NexusFile - Putting Windows Explorer out of its misery
  Looking for a good replacement for the Windows Explorer? NexusFile supports tabs, favorite folders, has a built in FTP client, and disk cleanup tool. And it's free.

Trying to figure out whether to see Indiana Jones or Sex in the City this weekend? Why not just skip the movies and catch up on some of the week's best software news?

• Windows 7 says hello world, then runs and hides away
  After months of speculation, Microsoft has finally lifted the veil of secrecy surrounding Windows 7. And by lifted the veil, we mean one tiny little corner. We now know that Windows 7 will feature multi-touch capabilities. And that's about it.
• Flipping the Linux Switch: Banshee learns to sing
  While Microsoft is busy keeping secrets, the open source Linux media player Banshee is free for anyone to use. The latest beta version adds a ton of features, allowing you to play MP3s, rip CDs, organize your music collection, burn discs, aggregate podcasts, or even connect to your Last.fm account.
• Mozilla - They're unbeWeavable
  Mozilla launched Weave last year as a way to keep your Firefox settings synchronized across multiple computers. But for some reason Mozilla left out one of the most useful features: password synchronization. Fortunately, this week an updated version of the Mozilla Weave browser plug-in was released, which lets you synchronize your bookmarks, saved form data, cookies, and passwords.
• Bubbles single-site web browser updated, adds extensions
  Before there was Mozilla Prism, there was Bubbles, a tool that lets you launch pretty much any web site in a stripped down web browser. Bubbles has been around for a few years, but the developers recently relesed a new beta version that adds support for user-generated extensions that give you more control over how the browser interacts with web pages. Extensions include a Gmail notifier and a Facebook chat application.
• OpenOffice.org keeps getting slower with each new release
  Free and open source office suite OpenOffice.org has a dirty little secret. It's slow. Like, you have to wait 20+ seconds to open a document sometimes slow. And it keeps getting slower. It turns out that OpenOffice.org 2.4 opens documents slower than version 1.1.5. And OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta is even slower still. But you can't beat the price.
• Adocu: Nanoblogging gets even nano-er
  Twitter took the world by storm by launching a blogging platform that limits your posts to just 140 characters. So it stands to reason that the only way to beat Twitter is to launch an even more limiting service, right? Adocu lets users post just a single word.

Have you been spending the week trying to convince your friends and family that you're not only staying in the race so that you can have some leverage in your campaign for the vice presidency? Then here are a few stories you might have missed. Don't worry, it's happened to all of us at one point or another.

• Microsoft: Would you use our search engine for a shiny new nickel?
  This week could go down in history as the week when Microsoft finally gave up on trying to get people to use its search engine because it's good and just decided to start bribing users. But we're guessing most people will probably forget about Microsoft's cash back offer for items found using the company's product search offer and go back to using better known product search sites.
• VLC's latest version:81,297,899 and rising
  Need a video player? Try VLC. How about an audio player? Try VLC. Need something that will open almost any format and has browser plugins for Firefox and Internet Explorer? Yeah, you know the rest.
• Hungarian student throws eggs at Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer
  Honestly, we're still not entirely sure why this guy was throwing eggs at Ballmer and not, say, the government officials he's accusing of wasting money on Microsoft products. But the video's fun to watch. And isn't that what really matters?
• Flipping the Linux Switch: Switching, literally, with Ulteo Virtual Desktop
  Want to run some Linux apps, but aren't ready to give up Windows? Ulteo's got you covered with a new virtual desktop product that runs Linux applications inside of Windows. And much to our surprise and delight, Ulteo Virtual Desktop does this quite seamlessly.
• Tag Galaxy: Spacy way to browse Flickr
  Tag Galaxy makes browsing Flickr a whole new experience. Just enter a search term, and watch as related keywords float across the screen. Zoom in and you can see a series of thumbnails. But honestly, words don't do Tag Galaxy justice. Just check it out for yourself. It's that cool.
• 10 Fresh NetNewsWire styles
  If there's one thing we love more than nifty visualizations, (see above), it's nifty skins. And OS X RSS reader NetNewsWire is fully skinnable, so we went on a skinning binge this week and found 10 themes that completely change the look and feel of one of our favorite desktop applications.

Been so buys buying smaller media companies that you haven't had time to keep up on the week's news? Here's what you've been missing, CBS, Condé Nast, and Comcast:

• Thunderbird 3 alpha 1 available now
  Firefox may get all the attention, but Mozilla's Outlook-clone/killer also shows that open source software can hold its own in the instant messaging space. This week saw the release of Thunderbird 3 alpha 1, which uses the Gecko 1.9 rendering engine, adds support for tabs, and a ton of other tweaks.
• OpenSolaris 2008.05, and other places the sun don't shine
  Sun released the open source version of its Solaris operating system this week. It's pretty, features the Gnome Desktop environment that should be familiar to Linux users, and is incredibly difficult to get working on common software. Join us for a romp through the world of OpenSolaris. You'll laugh, you'll cry. You'll thank us for trying it out so you don't have to.
• Torrent2exe turns any torrent file into a single-source BitTorrent client
  Ever try to explain to a friend how BitTorrent works and then suggest they download uTorrent just so they can download some large file from the web? Turns out there's a way to avoid that confused look on their face. Just grab the torrent file, upload it to Torrent2exe, and you'll get a single executable file that you can give your friend. When they click, the file will download just as easily as if they'd clicked a download link in their browser. You know, as long as someone's seeding it.
• Microsoft launches WorldWide Telescope public beta
  Why spend time gazing at the stars in your backyard when you could sit in front of your computer instead? Microsoft's WorldWide telescope lets you navigate they sky just as easily as Google Earth lets you navigate the earth. The software also features guided tours from astronomers and tools for controlling a telescope plugged into your PC.
• Monitor your hard drive usage with DriveSpacio
  Right click on a drive or folder in Windows and you can find out how much space it's taking up. But Windows doesn't do a great job of showing you which of all your folders are using the most space. DriveSpacio is. Enough said.
• Splashtop Linux interface coming soon to every Asus motherboard
  Imagine being able to surf the web or make a Skype call within seconds of hitting the power button on your PC. Pretty soon, you may be able to. No, Microsoft Windows 7 won't feature instant-on capabilities. But motherboard maker Asus plans to add an instant-on Linux-based OS to a million motherboards a month starting pretty soon. While you're waiting for Windows to boot in the background, you'll already be able to use your PC.

• Microsoft: Think twice about IE7 before upgrading to XP SP3
  We're going to go out on a limb and assume this doesn't affect a lot of people. But if you want to upgrade to Windows XP SP3 and use Internet Explorer 6 (because you're only cutting edge when it comes to operating systems, not web browsers), here's a tip: You will not be able to downgrade from IE7 to IE6 unless you install IE7 after SP3.
• Filemail: Email files up to 2GB
  We're always on the lookout for new ways to get around the 10-20MB file attachment limit imposed by most free email service providers. Filemail is a new service that lets you upload files up to 2GB to share via email. You can also adjust a variety of settings, or pay for a premium account if you need to upload even larger files.
• OpenOffice.org 3.0 beta now available
  The next major OpenOffice.org release isn't due out until this fall. But you can download a public beta of OpenOffice.org 3.0 today. The new version includes a handful of new features, a bunch of bug fixes, and a native OS X client.
• Hahlo 3.0: Twitter freak's new best friend
  Hahlo 3.0 might just be the best Twitter client we've seen for the iPhone. It's fast. It's pretty. And it supports practically every Twitter feature you could want in a mobile client.
• Puppy Linux 3.0 released: Linux for your flash drive
  Puppy Linux has long been one of the most popular "portable" Linux distributions. You can install Puppy to a flash drive and carry it with you to use on practically any computer that can boot from a USB device. The latest version includes a new theme, better hardware support, and some shiny new applications.

Well then, you've obviously had so much on your plate that you might have missed a few other stories this week. • Shady business practices work: Apple dramatically increases Safari users
  Apple got a lot of bad press a few weeks back for bundling the Safari web browser with its software update utility for Windows. Many PC users who thought they were just updating Quicktime or iTunes found themselves with a new web browser they never asked for. But you know what? It looks like it may have worked, because Apple tripled the number of Safari users on Windows.
• Flipping the Linux Switch: Xfce, the hidden gem of desktop environments
  Sure, GNOME and KDE get all the attention. But that's because they hog the limelight, while unassuming little Xfce toils away in the background doing what needs to be done. Xfce is a simple desktop environment for Linux that includes everything you need, and nothing you don't.

  Facebook recently launched a chat service that lets you communicate with other Facebook users in real-time -- but only when you're visiting the social network's web site. Now you can use desktop chat client Digsby to chat with your Facebook contacts whether you're on the web site or not. You can also use it to keep up with your AOL, MSN, Yahoo! AND Google Talk contacts.

The tests are too short to properly gauge how many words you can crank out in a minute. But you'll be amazed how quickly you can type when you see another player hot on your tail.

  If you're the sort of person who always has a hard time finding Hallmark cards that adequately express your feelings, you might want to check out Wrongcards. The site specializes in e-cards that are just... wrong. But funny. But oh so wrong.
• Del.icio.us releases Firefox 3 beta plugin
  Firefox 3 beta has been making the rounds long enough now that we know many Download Squad readers have started to use it as their primary browser. But there are a ton of useful plugins for Firefox 2 that don't yet work with Firefox 3 beta. And up until this week, the popular del.icio.us plugin was one of them. But you can finally cross that one off the list of incompatible plugins, because it's back, and it's better than ever.

Flickr launches video uploads

We've been expecting Flickr to add a video upload feature to the online photo sharing site for some time now. But we never would have guessed that when it finally arrived, Flickr users would be limited to uploading videos of 90 seconds or less. Flickr's justifying the move by saying the clips should be seen as long photos, not YouTube-style content. But that hasn't stopped Flickr traditionalists from forming and anti-video group and starting a petition asking Flickr to withdraw the feature.
