No glue or scissors are used at all, only folds on the paper itself. It goes without saying that it can take years to master the art of origami. But instant-origami has developed some clever ways to shorten the learning curve.

Using the power of video, instant-origami gives you a birds eye view of some very modern techniques to this ancient form of paper folding. Here you'll be able to view and create some of the most breathtaking paper sculptures like an octopus, a frog or even the mythical dragon.

We followed the instructions on the site and were very impressed with our own results as they came very close to the one on the video.

So if you've always wanted to try your hand at origami, check out some modern techniques over at instant-origami.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The users have spoken - Netflix is keeping profiles!

We recently reported on Netflix' decision to get rid of their profile feature, a decision that was not at all popular with customers. Here at Download Squad, we got several comments bemoaning the company's poor judgment and threatening to cancel their subscriptions to the service. Apparently, our readers were not alone. Thanks to pressure from calls, emails and petitions, Netflix has realize their error of their ways and agreed to keep profiles.

Today, Netflix users received this email:

"You spoke and we listened. We are keeping Profiles. Thank you for all the calls and emails telling us how important Profiles are.

We are sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused. We hope the next time you hear from us we will delight, and not disappoint you.

-Your friends at Netflix"

This is completely brilliant on the part of Netflix. They're going to get more goodwill from listening to users and keeping profiles than they ever lost by theatening to take them away. For users, nothing has changed, but the public perception of Netflix is bound to go up, now.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Search YouTube for music by artist, album with Jogli

Filed under: Audio, Internet, Video, Web services, Search, web 2.0

We'll let you in on a little secret: There are a ton of music videos and live performances on YouTube. What? You knew that? Well, then you also probably know how hard it can be to find every song on an album and play it in order. YouTube is really designed for searching for videos one at a time. But Jogli helps organize the mess.

Jogli is basically a search engine and music video player. Search for an artist and Jogli will bring up a list of possible results. Click an artist name and you'll find a list of albums. Click an album and you'll be presented with a list of songs. In many cases not each song is clickable, but many are.

When you hit the play button, a YouTube video will start playing in the corner. But you can also queue up additional songs and even search for new songs without stopping your recording. Jogli is a lot like MyStrands, another site we covered earlier this year. But the way Jogli organizes songs by artist and album sets it apart from the competition.

Thanks Chen!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wirewize - home theater setup help for the rest of us

Wirewize is here to help you put together your home entertainment center setup and tell you just where to put all those a/v cables that may be confusing you. If you're not savvy with input/output and reading tiny instruction manuals in Chinese thinly disguised as English isn't your cup of tea, Wirewize could be what you need.

The concept is great - you tell Wirewize what components you have by providing the brand and model and after you input all your components, Wirewize shoots out a detailed step by step instruction list. The best part is the instructions are complete with detailed illustrations of the cables and inputs and they're in color. Wirewize is also nice to include pdf manuals of your system's components, a list of necessary cables and a way to purchase the cables if necessary.
Continue reading Wirewize - home theater setup help for the rest of us

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

BBC iPlayer 2.0 arrives in beta

Filed under: Video, Web services, Beta

We've covered the BBC iPlayer in great depth here at Download Squad - from its inception to nationwide rollout - and today, the BBC has announced version 2 of the (hugely successful) project. The new-look site has been heavily re-designed, bringing together both Radio and Television shows in a central portal. Personalisation also seems to be the key to the new release, which incidentally runs side-by-side (at least for now) with the previous version. The iPlayer site keeps track of what you last watched, listing up to ten recently-viewed shows and if that weren't enough, a list of 'last night's TV' is available to help you find shows to catch up with. The video playback size also increased from 512 pixels wide to 640 pixels (a jump of 25%) and the BBC has promised a more 'cinematic' feel to pages playing video.

The iPlayer continues to use Flash to stream videos online for seven days after broadcast, and remains available only to UK residents due to the BBC's publicly-funded status - but if you're a UK resident then you can get started with this new beta here.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sing out loud over at Red Karaoke

Filed under: Audio, Fun, Video, Social Software

Let's be honest here. How many of us have gotten on stage to do a bit of karaoke. Don't worry no one is gonna laugh at you. Because when you did get up there, it was only for that moment never to be repeated again. Well that would be true unless you decided to sing it up at Red Karaoke.

Red Karaoke gives you the ability to sing your favorite songs and have it hosted on their site to share with others. Depending on how good you are at karaoke, this could be a good thing or a bad thing because members can comment and do vote on your performance.

The quality of the music reminds us of general midi files, but then again the accompaniment isn't the star here you are. If you want to give your performance a little more pizazz connect your web cam for some video karaoke action! The service itself is fun and easy to use. And Red Karaoke does offer a decent selection of songs ranging from the 1950's to the present in a variety of genres.

But try as we did, we couldn't find any NKOTB.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SearchMe visual search engine adds media search, bookmarks

Filed under: Internet, Video, Web services, Search, web 2.0

Visual search engine SearchMe is out of private beta and now has two nifty new features: Media search and stacks. Stacks is a fancy way of saying bookmarks, while Media Search lets you interact with online videos and images all from the SearchMe interface.

While traditional search engines like Google and Yahoo! present you with a list of text-based results, SearchMe shows screenshots of web pages matching your query. For example, searching for "Download Squad" would bring up a screenshort of our home page. When you click on the image you can visit the original page.

Now you can also click the video or images tabs and pull up screenshots of YouTube videos or Flickr images. When you click the play button you can even watch a video without leaving the SearchMe page. So you can flip through videos much like you would using the PicLens browser plugin, but without installing anyting.

The Stacks feature lets you organize collections of bookmarked pages. For example, you could create a list of your favorite tech news sites with thumbnails for easy reference. It's like an autopilot feature and it frakkin rocks.

A few months ago the company put out an even cooler feature that let Netflix account holders create multiple queues under one account. So basically your baby daughter, mom, uncle Steve, and your parrot Whiskers could have their own queue of movies that they want to see.

Such a time saver, such a great function that really reminds you why you use and love (and pay for) Netflix.

Don't go and try to sign up just for that feature though, because Netflix just announced that they're taking it away.
Continue reading We think we just saw Ashton Kutcher, cuz you just got Netflix'd!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Stage6 is dead, long live the Stage6 clones -- until they go down

DiVX killed off the Stage6 video sharing community back in February. And ever since then, new sites have been trying to pick up the torch. Stage6 used the popular DiVX codec and a DiVX Web player which allowed users to watch high definition videos at a time when most web video was YouTube quality. But the company decided the web service wasn't worth the price of bandwidth.

Last night one of the most talked-about DiVX clones, Vreel launched in public beta. And then the site went down after it was hit by a rush of traffic and several apparent attacks on the site. Durign the few minutes that Vreel was publicly available, the site looked pretty good. It features a fair number of videos, makes use of the DiVX web player, and allows you to watch high quality videos in full screen.

One of the things that really sets Vreel apart from other sites like YouTube is support for videos of any length. What that means is that while you won't find too many videos that are clearly labeled Lost episode 1, you can find plenty of full-length TV shows and movies if you look around. That means that once Vreel recovers from its traffic and hacker problems it may still face legal challenges.

But if you're tired of waiting for Vreel to get its act together, you should know that this is hardly the only site hoping to replace Stage6 in you hearts and minds. Others include Stage Next, Stagevu (which is currently down for maintenance), and SetVid. The video selection at these three sites is somewhat limited. But at least they're up and running (most of the time), which is more than Vreel can say at the moment.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Produce informational videos with Viddix

Filed under: Video, Web services, Social Software, web 2.0

Instructional videos or online reviews can sometimes be difficult to follow. Depending on watch you're watching it might be nice to have a second video displaying additional information that would aid in the presentation. Viddix may have found the answer to this in the form of their iPanel.

Once you've uploaded your video to the website, you'll need to add cuepoints. These cuepoints allow you to add text, links, photos, html pages, charts or other media rich files that your viewers can read and interact with. Viddix also provides cuepoint presets to ease the production of your video.

From start to finish, the production concept is straight forward and the average user shouldn't have many issues with producing their own videos.

While still in beta, we find the concept very useful, especially since we've started taking guitar lessons.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Skype 4.0 beta puts video front and center, takes over your screen

Filed under: Internet, Video, VoIP, P2P, Beta

Skype 4.0 beta for Windows is due out tomorrow. And this beta will represent a major shift for the VoIP client. While nearly a third of Skype calls are video, each version of Skype up until now has been designed with audio in mind. The client is small and easily resizeable and feels like an application for making phone calls. TechCrunch reports that Skype 4.0 beta will be a full screen application designed with video in mind.

The new version takes advantage of the larger window by spreading out the buttons a bit and adding support for new video features like picture in picture. There's also more room on the screen for text chat or for sharing files while conducting voice or video calls.

Skype 4.0 beta also features improved hardware deection and tools for testing your connection. But honestly, we're not convinced that this whole full-screen design is the way to go. There's no doubt that the updated Skype client looks like it will make video calls far more pleasant. But more than 70% of the calls placed on the Skype network are still audio-only. And we're guessing that a lot of the people placing those calls like to have a bit of space on their desktops to multitask while making phone calls.

Of course, if you're just using Skype for voice communication, you can always minimize the application while you're talking, web browsing, and playing World of WarCraft. Or whatever it is you do when you're on the phone.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hulu on AIR, kind of

Here at Download Squad, Hulu has become our favorite way to watch television online. With ever-expanding content choices, good quality and a nice interface, Hulu is almost as good as TV (as long as you live in the United States, that is). One of the few downsides is the need to use a browser to access content. Paul Yanez has created a program that aims to to solve that problem and make Hulu even better.

My Media Player is an Adobe AIR app that is designed to act as a Hulu portal of sorts. Launch the AIR app and you can choose from a categorized list of TV shows and movies available from Hulu. There is also a search function located within the player window so that you can find episodes or shows by title and also clips from Hulu.com

You can resize the application so that it can be docked to the side of the screen (if you want to watch a show while also doing some "real" work) and Paul designed the application to scale to fit a 30" monitor.

One of our favorite features of My Media Player is the ability to search for shows without stopping the program. Instead, the show continues playing in a small window in the left side of the application screen.

We really like the concept behind My Media Player and think it has terriffic potential, but there are a few issues that will probably keep us from using it as our primary method to access Hulu. Because My Media Player works by using the embedded versions of the programs from Hulu.com (Hulu.com allows you to embed all or part of a show onto your own webpage), the quality isn't as high as it is accessing the show directly from the web. And although we really like the ability to dock a Hulu playing window to the side of the screen in a small, unobtrusive size, we wish we had the ability to view the program in full screen. As it stands right now, expanding the window to cover our entire screen is both kludgy and unattractive, due to the aforementioned embedded version issue.

Still, if you want a way to watch shows without having to use your web browser, give My Media Player a shot.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PicLens 1.7 adds Amazon, news, movie trailers

Filed under: Internet, Video, Browser Tips

The folks behind the PicLens browser plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer are on a roll. Earlier this year the company rolled out an improved version that lets you view image slideshows from Google, Yahoo!, Flickr, Photobucket, SmugBug, Photobucket, and DeviantArt as a never-ending wall of pictures. Last month, PicLens added support for YouTube videos. And now PicLens 1.7 adds a whole new "Discover" section that lets you browse images and movies in categories such as:

US News

International News

Sports

Entertainment

Movies/TV

Fashion/Lifestyle

Science/Technology

Business

The content comes from several sources including MSNBC, ESPN, and movie trailer sites. And the content is constantly changing. You can access the Discover tab just by hitting the PicLens icon in your browser and selecting the Discover button on the left hand side of the screen.

PicLens has also added the ability to search Amazon.com from the main search box. And probably one of the most useful new features is a "Return to PicLens" button that pops up in your browser window any time you follow an image from PicLens back to its original source. This lets you go back to your PicLens session without starting over from scratch.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Vreel to launch Stage6 replacement soon, launches silly video now

Filed under: Internet, Video, Web services, web 2.0

Still reeling from DivX shutting down its Stage6 online video site? Vreel is here to help. Or it will be soon anyway. Vreel, or the Stage6 clone formerly known as DivXit, is preparing to launch a new online video sharing site featuring a high definition video player like the one formerly used at Stage6. Of course, we heard the same promises almost 2 months ago when Vreel was first announced. But now the team behind the site have released a super-short promotional video that seems to indicate that... well, not much really.

The How To Geek, on the other hand, has a more in-depth look at the new service and an interview with the site's founder. The new site uses the DivX Web Player and a decent looking site navigation. One nice feature is a pop-out button that lets you watch videos in a separate browser window.

Vreel is currently in private beta and accepting beta testers, with a full launch to follow once a few bugs have been worked out, including problems with files uploaded that don't have a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Boxee: Media center suite with a social twist

Filed under: Video, Macintosh, Linux, Open Source

There are plenty of media center suites designed to let you access photos, videos, and music stored on your PC or the web using a TV screen and remote control. But Boxee, which launches in private alpha on Monday is a bit different from Windows Media Center, MythTV, or other media center suites. That's because Boxee doesn't just let you access your media, it lets you share media and recommendations with other users. Eventually, the company plans to add Facebook integration so you can access your social networking data on a TV screen.

Boxee is based on the open source XBMC project. That means anyone can develop add-ons for the media center suite. Currently the software runs on Linux or Mac, with a Windows version coming later this year. Down the road, the company is hoping to bundle the software with set top boxes so you won't need to plug your PC into your TV to use Boxee.

The software supports a wide array of video formats and resolutions, including 1080p HDTV. But it does not support DRM, which means you won't be able to watch videos purchased from stores like iTunes or Amazon Unbox.

Boxee launches in private alpha on Monday, but you can sign up for an invitation on the company web site today.

[via NewTeeVee]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

WB announces web video distribution deals, snubs Hulu

Warner Brothers is broadening its online video strategy. The company recently launched a private beta version of a web site featuring WB television programs from years gone by including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, and Friends. There's also a smattering of original content. Now the WB has announced plans to spread the video love through a series of partnerships.

The WB will be launching two web sites, TheWB.com and KidsWB.com. You'll be able to watch videos on those two sites, but the WB will also be distributing content via DailyMotion, Joost, Sling Media, TiVo, and Veoh Networks.

The whole thing actually sounds an awful lot like Hulu, a similar venture started by Fox and NBC. While you can watch videos at Hulu.com, you can also find Hulu content at other online video portals like AOL Video or MSN Video. The WB already distributes a handful of shows through Hulu, but nowhere near the number you'll be able to find at the new web sites.

Honestly, it would have been kind of awesome if the WB had partnered with Hulu so you could find most of the content you were looking for at a single site instead of visiting yet another page to find a video. Fortunately, some of these partners, including Veoh will have partnerships with both Hulu and the WB, which means you may be able to find a one-stop shop. It just won't be managed by Hulu, Fox, NBC, or the WB.

The new channels will launch in mid-September.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

TidalTV: Web video doesn't get much more TV-like

Filed under: Internet, Video, Web services, Beta, web 2.0

TidalTV is the latest company attempting to demonstrate that online video doesn't have to look like YouTube. While Joost takes online video away from the web browser, and Hulu embeds high quality network video on a web page, TidalTV has taken another approach by creating a web service that looks an awful lot like an old fashioned TV interface.

When you first visit the TidalTV page, you'll see an electronic program guide with a schedule of currently playing and upcoming shows. In the corner you'll see a video box. You can click the video to enlarge it, or you can flip channels by scanning through the program guide.

If you don't feel like waiting until 2pm for a show to start, you can just click on it. While TidalTV does have a "live TV" feel, all videos are available on demand. You can also click the on demand tab to browse for programs.

TidalTV doesn't have as much content as NBC and Fox-backed Hulu, but the site does have several content partnerships in place which means that you might actually find something worth watching. So far, partners include CBS, National Geographic, DIY network, HGTV, The AP, NBC News, MSNBC, The Weather Channel, The WSJ, and TV Guide.

[via ReadWriteWeb]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

It's that time again! So some guy named Steve Jobs got up on stage at something called the WWDC yesterday and talked about some products from a company called...orange or banana? Or was it carrot.

Oh, Apple, that's right.

It was long. And sometimes boring. So thanks to Mahalo Daily, here it is in Sixty Seconds. Did we get our iPhone with iRobot and iHateMakingMyOwnCoffee? We do get Exchange integration and now we're all Mobile with MobileMe and plus Apps for iPhone coming July 11th. Whew, that's a lot.

What they left out was that the new OS Snow Leopard or Rain Monkey or whatever (coming next year), will support multi-core processors, AND be able to take advantage of even more RAM (up to 16TB!).

See for yourselves.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Turn your webcam into a security camera with Periscope

Filed under: Security, Utilities, Video, Macintosh
Have you ever wondered how you could set your webcam up as a security camera and have the images sent to you somewhere else? Maybe you wanted motion detection or noise detection to turn it on automatically? Or maybe that's just us, and we're a little paranoid. Regardless, Periscope is a tool that lets you do all of those things with your webcam, and more.

You can trigger it to start recording in several ways: motion detection, noise detection, via Apple Remote, or with a timer. Once it's on, it'll capture images and save them to disc or send them to a few other places for review. It works with Flickr, e-mail, FTP, iPhoto, and the now-obsolete .mac (presumably an upcoming version will support MobileMe). You can also time-stamp or add your own logo automatically to your pictures.

Even if you're not interested in the security applications of Periscope, you might find it useful for making time-lapse videos. With its ability to capture images at intervals, you could theoretically capture your entire day at your desk if you had the disk space. Although we tested it with a built-in iSight, Periscope should work with other webcams.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Daily Show, Colbert Report come to Hulu

Filed under: Internet, Video, web 2.0

It might be time to give up your cable box (If you live in the US anyway). Two of the most popular shows on Comedy Central are coming to Hulu. Sure, you could already watch full length episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report at the Comedy Central web site, but we're big fans of one-stop shops around here. And as of today, you can find these programs along with episodes of The Office, Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, and Starsky & Hutch all in one place. What more could you need?

While Hulu started out as a partnership between Fox and NBC, the company has been steadily adding content partners over the last few months. While CBS, ABC and the CW are nowhere to be seen, you can find some popular TV shows and movies from networks including Sony, MGM, and Warner Brothers.

Hulu will also be adding PBS content later this month, with shows including Nova, Carrier, Scientific American Frontiers, and Wired Science.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
