Sometimes you want to open a file saved on your desktop, but you don't want to minimize all of the applications you're currently running just to get to it. DesktopOnTop can help. While Windows lets you add a "desktop" toolbar to the taskbar that will let you launch items saved on your desktop, DeskTopOnTop goes one step further and actually shows you a visual representation of your desktop.

If you just want a list, you can right-click on the DesktopOnTop icon in the system tray and get a start-menu lookalike with a list of programs and files on your desktop. But a left click brings up a picture of your desktop. Sort of. The first thing you'll probably notice is that the wallpaper doesn't match yours. If this bothers you, you can either change your desktop wallpaper to match DesktopOnTop (which nobody really expects you to do), or you can select a solid color that looks good with your desktop an adjust the program's transparency level.

DesktopOnTop is highly customizable and light weight. It uses about 8MB of RAM.

[via Freeware Genius]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Backup your flash drives with USB Image Tool

Filed under: Security, Utilities, Windows, Freeware

USB Image Tool is a utility for creating an exact image of pretty much anything you plug into your USB port. This isn't the same thing as copying and pasting all the files on a flash drive to a new directory or zip file. Instead, every chunk of data on your flash drive is saved in a single file that you can then burn to a disc, upload to an offsite storage location, or just save on your hard drive.

If you keep work documents, portable applications, or other important data on a flash drive, it's a good idea to back it up occasionally. USB Image Tool makes the process about as simple as can be. You plug in a drive, hit backup, and choose a location to store the image. You can also select a compressed file format if you want to save a little bit of space, but it takes longer to create a compressed image.

[via gHacks]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Allway Sync: Easy file sync for Windows, now with Amazon S3 support

Filed under: Security, Utilities, Windows, Shareware

There are plenty of Windows applications out there that will let you synchronize files across multiple folders. But there are a few things that set Allway Sync apart. First up, you can install Allway Sync on a flash drive to carry with you and use on multiple PCs. Second, Allway Sync is free for personal use and you're only required to pay for a license if you're a heavy user of if you feel like it. No one will ever make you pay, but the software is totally worth buying.

The latest version also adds support for synchronizing files with an FTP server or Amazon S3 storage. This makes Allway Sync a great little tool for backing up your files to offsite storage. The only problem is that there's no built-in scheduler. You have to initiate each sync job manually. If you're lazy and prefer automated backups, you might be better off with a utility like Jungle Disk. But the advantage of performing manual backups is that Allway Sync provides detailed information about each new, changed, or questionable file.

[via Ed Bott]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Undelete Plus Offers Free, Fast File Recovery

We've gone through a ton of "simple" file recovery apps at Download Squad, and not all of them perform as advertised. Some take a painfully long time to scan only to report few - if any - recoverable files, dashing our hopes of retrieving that funny lolcat we deleted by accident.

Undelete Plus, however, is a champion at what it does. It quickly completes its scan for potential targets, displays them in a detailed list that includes likelihood to be recovered, size, date created, and path, and even gives you a second pane with totals grouped by file type.

We tried the recovery on formats that typically gives these programs fits - images and video - and Undelete Plus recovered each one without issue. Granted, there are going to be times when it can't - no recovery app is perfect - but we were certainly impressed in our testing.

If you've accidentally wiped something important from your PC, do yourself a favor and download it. We guarantee that it will increase the likelihood that your spouse won't make you sleep on the couch because you trashed their favorite pic or song by 70%.

[ via WinAddons ]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

FlexTK Makes File Management Easy

If you're like us, your hard drive is anything but tidy. That's because us power users can't be bothered to keep things organized - there are just too many awesome things out there to download, extract, and forget about because half of them turn out to be garbage.

FlexTK for Windows helps make short work of cleaning up after yourself, offering a full complement of file management tools in one handy package. Folder sync, duplicate file search, temp file cleanup, storage utilization, search, and an advanced organization module are all included. Navigation is handled beautifully in an explorer-like manner, tweaked by the addition of breadcrumbs and a "bookmarks" pane that allows you to quickly link your favorite locations.
Continue reading FlexTK Makes File Management Easy

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Make your own Mario masterpiece with Mario Paint Composer

Filed under: Fun, Utilities, Windows, Macintosh
Mario Paint Composer lets you do what you know you've wanted to do all of your life...compose music in the key of Super Mario. Yay.

Don't have any music writing chops? No problem, neither do we. It makes fun noises and has cool Mario icons. 'Nuff said.

The default song when you load up Mario Paint Composer is a jazzy version of your favorite video game theme song ever. But it's up to you to write the next masterpiece.

And not just any masterpiece, you get to use pigs and cats and hearts.

Best part is that when the app is loaded, everywhere you click on your computer, the sounds follow. I like hearing a nice Yoshi sound when I click on an email or on iChat.

unFun built an interface for you to lo in and download all the songs you want, for your personal listening and partytime enjoyment, but it took forever to log into the system, so we wouldn't hang our hats on that feature.

[via chris pirillo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rember the memory checker

Contrary to marketing hype, Macs do crash and when they do you'll need to do some basic troubleshooting to determine the reason why.

If it appears to be a hardware problem, one thing you may want to remember is, well, Rember.

Rember is a front end GUI for Memtest and while you can certainly run Memtest in Terminal, Rember's GUI version makes it much easier to use.

The interface is broken up into 3 main parts:

How much memory you want tested

The number of times you want to run the test

Preferences

Once you decided on the amount of ram and the number of loops let Rember do the rest. Once completed, review the logs to determine if your RAM is the reason why your Mac is crashing.

Keep in mind that Rember is a GUI app that runs on top of your OS so some of your RAM will be in use and will not be available for testing. Think of it has a small trade off for not having to deal with the Memtest switches.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Do you know what your hard drive has been up to?

Knowing the status of your hard drive is a great way to prepare for problems that may potentially arise. And thank to CrystalDiskInfo obtaining this information from your hard drive couldn't be any easier.

CrystalDisk will gather data from your hard drive and will let you know its current temperature, the number of power cycles and even the number of hours the drive has been on. All this information comes in handy when trying to determine the root of a system crash or data failure, especially when you're dealing with an older drive in a crowded system case where cooling may not be optimal.

In our testing, the program was very easy to use and recognized our drive right away. Fortunately for us, we had no issues but if we did, we had no doubt that CrystalDisk would alert us to the problem so that appropriate steps could be taken.

CrystalDisk is a free application available for Windows and is a bit of a must have tool in diagnosing hard drive errors.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Beeswax: command-line productivity app

Filed under: Text, Utilities, Linux, Productivity, Freeware, Unix

One of the longest ongoing debates in the productivity/Getting Things Done crowd is about which app works best for keeping tasks in order. Different factions support everything from power tools like OmniFocus to good old pen and paper. Apparently, though, some people miss classic command-line productivity apps like Lotus Agenda. If you're running a Unix-like OS, and you need a solid GTD system, you might find Beeswax, a free, Agenda-inspired app, worth a look.

It's a little tricky to explain how this works, so you might need to check it out for yourself, but we'll do our best. Basically, you have to-do items, and you have categories. If you assign sub-items to an item -- you know, something that takes multiple steps to do -- it's treated like a category. Items can be assigned to multiple categories, so everything is flexible. If you're someone who hates anything that requires a mouse, this is right up your alley.

[via 43Folders]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sloth loves Chunk, and we love Sloth for Mac

Filed under: Utilities, Macintosh, Productivity, Apple, Microsoft
One of the only features some of us here like about Windows is that you can alt-ctrl-del and look at the open tasks and programs running at any given time.

It's nice to know what's sucking up all of your memory (pr0n) and what's bogging down your processor (DVD burning).

Sloth for Mac OS X shows us exactly what's running, Windows style.

You can see which application is running which process, reveal the directory it's running out of, and kill it off if you want. Sure, there are services out there who have come and gone that promised to store your precious information once you've taken days and days to enter them.

Here comes another, called IHeartMovies.org. We want to preface this by saying that you should always look into the background of web apps and feel free to contact the company to see if you feel like they're in it for the long haul. Nobody likes putting info up, only for the company to dissapear in a week or month.

Having said that, IHeartMovies aims to be a social network for you and your friends (and people all over the world) to share your likes as far as movies go. Great idea, let's jump right into the features.

Rate Titles

Break your collections down into lists (TV or Film)

Check out your collections in multiple views (full description and icon view, or quick list)

Full search of your lists, others lists, and sitewide information

Share movie likes and dislikes on Facebook, StumbleUpon, Delicious, Google

Pretty standard stuff, right?

But it's all in the presentation here. When you log in, you're presented with a pretty neat dashboard that will show you whatever you want to see based on your interests. Things like what your friends have added and quick surveys.

With this type of format, we really hope that IHeartMovies Hearts us and stays up with things, and that means adding more functionality and more widgets. It's an ajaxified and friendlier IMDB.

Post your lists in the comments so we can see what kind of wacky movies you like.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Optically challenged computers rejoice!

Virtual drive software isn't new, but with the recent surge of ultra portable notebooks that do not have built in optical drives this is a good time to go over one of the free emulation software out there, Slysoft's Virtual CloneDrive.

For those that may not know, a virtual drive emulates a physical drive, in this case an optical drive. This way you can mount a disc image and use it as if a physical disc was inserted into an actual drive.

CloneDrive gives you the ability to mount up to 8 virtual drives at once. Simply right click the virtual drive under My Computer and select the image you would like to mount or just double click the image file itself.

One nice feature of CloneDrive is that it also shows a history of what's been mounted before making it easy to swap out images without the need to browse your computer.

Keep in mind that you will need to convert your CD/DVD to an image format before using CloneDrive. But once you have, loading programs are only a mouse click away.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cocoalicious: Browser for Del.icio.us bookmarks

Filed under: Internet, Utilities, Macintosh, Freeware, Social Software, web 2.0
Cocoalicious is a really slick -- but, unfortunately, Mac-only -- dedicated browser for your Del.icio.us bookmarks. If you're a bookmarking junkie, and you have way more sites saved to Del.icio.us than you could ever hope to keep track of, this could be an ideal solution for you. It's laid out a bit like Apple Mail, with your tags running down the left side, your bookmarks on top, and a browser pane at the bottom.

You can put bookmarks directly into Cocoalicious -- it syncs with your Del.icio.us account -- or use the bookmarklet to add stuff to Cocoalicious straight from your browser. This way you can take advantage of autocompletion, tagging by dragging, and other features that make Del.icio.us easier. Cocoalicious also supports Spotlight, so you can search for your bookmarks straight from the Finder!

[via Lifehacker]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Change your Windows open/save dialogs with PlacesBar Editor

Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Open Source

Ever since Windows 2000, Microsoft has included 5 handy buttons on the left hand side of most open and close dialogs in Windows. PlacesBar Editor lets you customize those folders. Just launch the open source utility and choose the folders you'd like to use. If you never store anything in your My Documents folder, for example, why not replace that button with one that says Temp or Download?

If you're worried about mucking up your system, you can take solace in the fact that PlacesBar Editor has a defaults button that will restore things to normal with the click of a button (two buttons, actually. You have to click defaults, and then save).

PlacesBar Editor also lets you add 5 additional folders or locations to the MS Office open/save dialog.

[via Lifehacker and Freeware Genius]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blist adds new document sharing features

Filed under: Utilities, Social Software, web 2.0
Web-based list-creation service Blist has made a couple of changes recently, and the biggest one is "less a feature and more a philosophy." Because Blist is easier to demonstrate than it is to explain, you can now try Blist without an account. You can play with all the features, browser other people's Blists and even make your own -- you just can't save it.

At the same time, they've introduced social features, similar to the ones you're familiar with from places like Digg and Google Reader. You can add contacts and share Blists with others via your contact list. Previously, you could only share via email (that feature is still available.) We love to see intelligent uses of social features like Blist's. Chi.mp stands for Content Hub and Identity Management Platform, and it's centered around your own yourname.mp domain. Instead of keeping your data fragmented across several different social networks, you own your data, and you can keep it all on one domain and control what flows out to where (and to who).

Chi.mp is still in alpha, but we can't wait for a chance to see what it can do. We already know that your chi.mp domain will work with OpenID, and consolidating your login is definitely a good start. The specifics of chi.mp's interface and how it will interact with existing networks are still under wraps, but this looks like one to watch. Signups for the beta are still open, so head over and check it out.

If you're curious about how chi.mp has got its hands on all those .mp sites, here's the explanation: ".mp, the ccTLD for the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands (CNMI) is being repurposed for personal identity and social networking. Second-level .mp domains will be integrated into the chi.mp offering and given away to personal owners free of charge." If you want to get in on the sunrise registration for .mp, you can score a domain for $50.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

PlanningWiz: plan and share room layouts

If you're moving to a new place or just want to reorganize furniture in your current living space, PlanningWiz may be helpful by letting you plan and lay out objects in your rooms. Set your room dimensions (you can choose Imperial or Metric system, but for some reason you can't choose Imperial on the first step) and start selecting furniture pieces to begin experimenting.

You can choose furniture from categories like "child's bedroom," "bathroom," and "kitchen," and you can drag-to-resize the furniture objects to match the dimensions of your existing (or future) objects. PlanningWiz also lets you customize the design with color, text, and dimension guides.

The plan can have a custom scale from 1":1' down to 3/32":1'. Plans can be saved to your free account space, printed, or shared via e-mail.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Showcase your stuff with meOwns

meOwns is a site designed to allow you to showcase the stuff you own. You can list items that you actually own, or items that you would like to own on the site and add photos to those lists so people can see what you're talking about. The lists you create on meOwns can then be put into a widget that you can embed on your website or MySpace profile, or you can add a Facebook widget to display your items for your Facebook friends.

According to the site, the idea is is to bring people together through "the one thing that connects us all - the yearn to own!" While we're not so sure <strike>any normal person</strike> anyone would want to upload all the stuff they own to the site, the site could have some use in getting rid of the stuff you already own and don't want anymore. The widget could be an easy way to showcase your old movies, CDs, computer monitors, clothing, etc. for your friends, and mention things that they might own you'd be interested in taking off their hands in exchange.

One huge downside is that right now the site requires you to upload photos from your computer for each item you add. It would be nice to see them add automatic photos for things like DVDs and CDs that are going to always look the same so you don't have to upload a new picture for each individual item which gets annoying pretty quickly particularly if you have that crazy "yearn to own" they were talking about.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Temporarily turn off Windows Update restart nags using Leave Me Alone!

Filed under: Utilities, Windows, Microsoft, Freeware

Since you want your computer to be as secure as it can possibly be, you have Windows set to automatically install updates as soon as they're available, right? Well, if you do, you will have noticed that Windows can be pretty pushy about wanting to restart. In fact, it will pop up a reminder every 10 minutes until you finally give in, or worse, accidentally press the space bar when the update dialog pops up and initiate a restart at the exact wrong time.

To avoid this annoying situation, check out Brad Isaac's free utility called Leave Me Alone! Leave Me Alone! allows you to temporarily turn off the restart nag window until you actually do restart. This allows you to finish what you were doing and choose when to restart, rather than being bullied into restarting at the least convenient time.

Leave Me Alone! works on both Windows XP and Windows Vista.
