Well, Google's great at search, but that doesn't mean it's the best tool in every situation. Consider searching for PDFs containing specific information; wouldn't you like to see a nice clean list of PDF titles with links both to the PDF in question and an HTML version of it? PDF Search Tool offers exactly that functionality.

To be fair, Google can do this too, particularly if you use the search argument "filteype=pdf", but PDF Search Tool feels somehow more purpose-built. For those that are inclined, it's interesting to see what happens when you search for a well-known author's name; PDF Search Tool almost feels like a pirate ebook finder when used that way. Not that you would. Or should.

Klava's a free, online touch-typing tester that delivers a never-ending stream of words in patterns that help you focus on the most troublesome letter combinations, increasing your overall typing speed.

The tool offers a few different word sets including standard and advanced English, and even a few programming languages for the software developers out there that would like to increase their speed.

As someone who taught himself to touch-type using an ancient piece of freeware on my Windows 3.1 computer, I can vouch for the effectiveness of this type of tool. Dedicate twenty minutes per day, and your typing speed will increase in no time.

The publisher vs. retailer dispute arose when Macmillan wanted to raise prices on its eBooks to $15, which is well over what Amazon currently charges (and, arguably, more than consumers will pay). You can get the details of the original dispute in an earlier post by Download Squad's Brad Linder.

For now, the details of the resolution aren't being made public, but Amazon has said it will allow major publishers to switch to an "agency" model for eBook sales. That means publishers like Macmillan and HarperCollins can sell you their eBooks directly, at whatever prices they wish, and Amazon will act as the middleman and take a 30% commission. The New York Times speculates that Amazon also asked the publishers not to make exclusive deals with other eBook vendors, like Apple's upcoming eBook store.

Creative writing is not an easy task, but the web gives us great opportunities to collaborate and get some help. For our own book, my friend and I set up a custom DokuWiki which does the trick quite nicely. But not everyone likes to tinker; some people simply want to get down to business and start telling their story while getting feedback from their writing buddies.

This is the purported target audience for ScribbleSquid. The site claims to be friendly to the average user and even "introduce non-techies to the power of version control". Excited, I went ahead and registered and then started fiddling with it and figuring things out.

Despite their claims, the site is complex. I had a hard time figuring things out even after looking at the docs and watching the videos. But that's okay -- not all sites have to be dead-simple. Yet imagine my amazement when after searching and searching, I came to realize the website is missing one key feature:

Continue reading ScribbleSquid tries to help new writers -- with one glaring omission

ScribbleSquid tries to help new writers -- with one glaring omission originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 16:10:00 EST. This will be of most interest to Apple fans who are planning to buy an iPad, because it's the file format that the iBookstore will use.

Even if you're not planning on getting an iPad, EPUB is the format used by all major ebook readers (except the Kindle), so the guide is probably worth reading anyway!

EPUB is based on an international standard and is intended to be the ebook format -- to that end, it supports just about everything, including the possibility to implement a custom DRM scheme to satisfy publishers.

The TUAW guide lists a few great Mac apps for making EPUB files (including the delightful open-source and cross-platform Sigil), but Windows-only options are slim pickings, unless you fancy forking out some serious dollars for Adobe's InDesign.

You don't need a fancy device to read EPUB files, though. There are literally tons of readers -- give Stanza [iTunes link] a go if you're using an iPhone or iPod Touch, or Bookworm for an awesome web-based EPUB reader.
In September of 2009, Automattic (the company behind WordPress) acquired ATD and promptly integrated it into their wildly popular blogging platform.

If you do any writing anywhere on the web and you're using Firefox, you'll be glad to know that the After the Deadline add-on has hit version 1.0 and should be shedding Mozilla's experimental tag very soon.

In case you're not familiar with it, ATD is a brilliant proofreading tool. It can handle everything from common typos to misused punctuation, redundancies, double negatives, and other grammatical gaffs.

Install the Firefox add-on and you can tap its proofreading powers virtually anywhere you can type. It's well worth adding to your writer's toolbox even if you are a master of the written word -- it never hurts to have backup, after all!

Curious what goes on behind the scenes? Check out this recent blogpost which describes in gloriously geeky detail how ATD comes up with spelling suggestions.
For once, a cloud app I downloaded had absolutely nothing to do with storing files on someone else's remote server. This cloud is all about the tags, baby!

CloudPad is an open source note/task pad application that is elegantly simple to use and incredibly handy. Title a new note, set its priority, fill in all the necessary details, add some tags, and you're done. You can also add tags in bulk via a pop-up window or by inputting a comma-separated list.

Two quick ways to view your notes are provided -- the tag cloud (left) and the priority items view (right). A speedy and flexible search feature is also provided, and will no doubt come in handy once you're saved a few dozen/hundred notes.

If you're willing to overlook the required .Net 2.0 runtimes [Filehippo download], CloudPad can also be considered portable. It is for me, anyway, since all the machines I plan to use it on are running Windows 7 anyway.

You may find fuller-featured apps out there, but CloudPad certainly packs a big punch for such a small package.

CloudPad is a handy, lightweight GTD notepad with tag support originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 13:30:00 EST. As our lives are transformed by the convenience technology provides, the price we pay is the privacy we give up. Today is Data Privacy Day, and we thought it was a good time to highlight one of the areas where companies are watching your behavior closely.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation published an excellent guide, "The E-Book Buyer's Guide to Privacy " which dishes the goods on E book readers' privacy policies by brand. It might give you pause to think of the powerful information Amazon, Barnes&Noble, Google, and Sony could employ with the information they monitor on what books individuals read or search for.

For instance, two of the E-book readers (Google Books and Amazon Kindle) can monitor what you're reading. Google's Book Search Project takes tracking reading habits to a new level, logging what you searched for, the page you read, how long you viewed the page, and where you searched next.

All of the E-book readers, Google Books, Amazon Kindle, B&N Nook, and Sony Reader can keep track of book searches and book purchases. Most troubling is the fact that the information collected on your book selections, searches, and purchases could be shared outside the company without your consent (applies to the Kindle, Nook and Reader).

The good news is you do have options. You can laugh in the face of the commercial behemoths and get a free, open source FBReader (for Windows/Linux) which collects no data on your book selections or searches. Another option: you can go to a bookstore and purchase an old fashioned paper book, with cash preferably.
E-book buyer's privacy guide - reading isn't solo anymore originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 14:06:00 EST. Hockenberry is known for an online persona he sometimes takes on Twitter, where he types in all capitals. This persona is sometimes known as the CHOCKLOCK, and has resulted in people that are "in the know" referring to CapsLock as CHOCKLOCK.

All of that is background to explain why the utility I'm about to tell you about is called CHOCKSEE. CHOCKSEE is a Mac utility that will show you a pretty floating bezel on the screen if you happen to bump the CapsLock key, much like what you see on a Mac if you hit the Eject key.

And that's all that it does. Cute? Definitely. Useful? Kinda, sorta. I mean, there's already a visual indicator that your CapsLock key is on: ALL YOUR TEXT IS IN UPPERCASE LETTERS.

CHOCKSEE visually warns you when your CapsLock key is activated originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 17:23:00 EST. When I ask them why they didn't just get an iPhone, I often hear that they "need a real keyboard". I have to admit that when I started with my iPhone, I wasn't sold on the idea of a soft-keyboard (one that exists only in software through the touchscreen), but it took only a short time to be convinced. I feel reasonably fast when typing on my phone now, which is something that I can't say about my years using a Windows-Mobile based PDA.

In fact, if I was to venture a guess, I'd say that I'm as fast typing on my phone as I am writing. It's a revelation to me to be able to take notes digitally at the same speed as I used to be able to write them.

Phil Gyford was even more curious than me about input speed, so he set himself up a test between handwriting, an Apple Newton MessagePad, a Palm Vx, a Palm Treo, an iPhone, and a laptop, using each's primary input method:

Pen and paper

The Apple Newton MessagePad 2100's handwriting recognition (1997)

The Palm Vx's Graffiti (1999)

The Palm Treo 650's hardware QWERTY keyboard (2004)

The Apple iPhone 3G's software QWERTY keyboard (2009)

A full-size QWERTY laptop keyboard

I'm particularly interested in the comparison between handwriting recognition and the iPhone's software keyboard. The results (scroll down!) might surprise you, as they did me. Do they match up with your experiences?

After Google purchased the collaborative text editing site EtherPad and subsequently screwed up by trying to turn off the ability to create new pads, many people have lost confidence in Google's ability to effectively host their data on EtherPad. Google has been clear that it is their long-term plan to drop EtherPad as a service, but at the same time they have already begun open-sourcing the code for EtherPad so that others may make use of it.

PiratePad is a new site hosted by the Pirate Party using the EtherPad code to offer an alternative place to host your pads. Though the domain doesn't instill all kinds of confidence (I mean, do you really want to rely on a service with the name "pirate" in the domain?), it's nice to see what's possible with EtherPad's source code being opened up. And since the Pirate Party has not indicated any intention to shutter the service, it might be a way to ensure that you can keep consistently going back to the same service long after Google's decided that EtherPad's time has come.

I'd like to see someone come up with a very straightforward installer for EtherPad so that I can add the service's functionality to my own site. Do you use EtherPad, and if so, for what? Can you see yourself using Wave in the future instead of EtherPad?

PiratePad is EtherPad, elsewhere originally appeared on Download Squad on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST. Do you remember how great it felt to switch from T9 to a full qwerty keyboard on your phone? No more laborious multiple taps just to get one letter! Well, the developers of an app called Swype are hoping you'll get the same feeling when you compare their product to the software keyboard on your Android device. Swype brings a new way of typing to Android phones: instead of tapping each letter, you just swipe your finger to the next letter you want to put in. It may take some getting used to, but it may also be totally awesome and from the future.

Of course, the premise of Swype raises some questions: is this fancy new typing limited to a specific Swype app? What about error correction? It sounds like it's easy to make a typo when you're swiping like that! Well, fear not, because Swype's keyboard is available within existing apps, including browsers.

You can even change between Swype and standard typing on the fly. As for error correction, Swype will make suggestions, but it won't autocorrect to the first possibility. You actually get a handy list of possible words you could have meant to type (er, swipe?). If you make a mistake, you can double-tap any word to pick from the list again.

To get a feel for how Swype works, check out a demo video recorded by Mobilecrunch.

So far, Swype has an Android beta version that works on the Droid and the Nexus One, with support for other Android phones presumably coming later this year.
I was a little bit surprised by the reaction; some people thought it was a great idea, while others thought it ridiculous and couldn't imagine why anyone would ever want to do that.

Well, if you fall into the latter camp, you might as well skip the rest of this post.

But for those of you that, like me, find it useful to be able to create a new text file right in the finder, you're in luck. Jonas Wisser, the man behind the original script has created a new version of it with some added ease of use.

Jonas' new script will now ask you for a file name for the new text file (you don't need to add .txt, it will do that automatically), then automatically open the new file in your text editor of choice. Slick.

If, like me, you're using the Alpha version of the new Finder add-on Total Finder that Jay posted about, you'll want to note that there seems to be a conflict between Total Finder's Visor function and the new New Text File Here script that causes all new scripts to be created on the desktop instead of in the folder being viewed. Jonas is aware of the issue, and has promised to look into it, though it may or may not be something that can be solved in AppleScript. The workaround is to turn the Visor feature of Total Finder off, or uninstall Total Finder.

We've already got a ton of note taking applications to choose from -- like Evernote and Notational Velocity -- so what does Thoughts bring to the table to set itself apart?

As far as I can tell, Thoughts wants to be the pretty girl at the party. They're not trying to compete on features with the likes of Evernote, and they're not trying to compete on speed with the likes of Notational Velocity. Instead, they're taking the approach that note taking is more fun when it feels more like actually taking notes in a notebook.

The app is gorgeous, and very much a part of the delicious generation of software that puts a very high emphasis on aesthetics. You can create notebooks, add pages to notebooks, and even do some advanced formatting like adding tables to your pages. It also has wiki-like features allowing you to link to other pages within a notebook, to websites (of course), or even link to a message in Mail.

The fancy user interface includes animated page turns, and you can use mouse gestures to mimic the act of actually flipping pages. While this is a nice gimmick, it's certainly not the fastest way to navigate.

With a substantial price tag of 24 Euros, Thoughts has some stiff competition from the free note taking app crowd. I can imagine that people who are transitioning to using a computer from writing their notes in notebooks might enjoy the familiar interface, though.

Thoughts is a pretty new note taking app for Mac originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 11:01:00 EST.
Here you have it! A first look at Blio, an eBook reader app that is destined to be used on tablets such as Apple's rumored iSlate.

Blio is the creation of inventor and futurist Raymond Kurzweil. You might be familiar with his name if you've used speech recognition software, or if you've read one of his many books on the topic of transhumanism (a meaty subject, but well worth looking into if you're a nerd like me).

The app itself looks very sharp indeed and will apparently be released on both the iPhone and PC. With colour e-ink still not on the market, a swish and shiny app like this could definitely gain traction. The Kindle and Nook are great, but don't quite make the grade for kids' stories or educational/instructional books with diagrams and pretty pictures.

We'll be sure to bring you more info on Blio after it debuts at next week's CES!
You can get it at http://en.opensuse.org/Education/Live#Download. There are some screen shots here.

This is a Live DVD - you simply place the DVD in the computer's DVD drive and reboot the machine from it. When the machine comes up, you will be running Linux. Normally, the software won't write to your computer's hard drive unless you specifically ask it to. So

You'll want to plug in a USB disk drive / memory stick for documents you want to save or share with other users or machines.

When you shut the computer down and remove the DVD, it will come back up just as it was before.

What's on the DVD:

Dozens of educational, scientific and mathematical software packages ranging from pre-school to graduate school. A partial list is here.

The Sugar desktop from the One Laptop Per Child project.

Graphics and desktop publishing. A partial list is here.

The OpenOffice.org productivity suite, the Gobby collaborative editor, the Okular PDF viewer, PdfMod PDF editor and the Evolution e-mail / calendaring package.

The Ekiga Softphone voice over IP and video conferencing package.

The Firefox browser, XChat IRC client, Pidgin and Kopete Instant Messaging clients, Chokoq and Gwibber Twitter clients and many more Internet tools.

Both the Gnome and KDE desktops.

If you're a more advanced user, or work with a school system that's building an educational computer system, there are many more tools on this DVD, described here, here and here.

Now let's take a closer look at some of the packages. For photographers and graphic artists, there's the GNU Image Manipulation Program, known as The GIMP. Typically, you would use GIMP for retouching photos, editing images, making logos and other sophisticated image manipulation tasks. There's an excellent collection of tutorials here.

If you're interested in mind mapping, there's View Your Mind (vym). You can do 3D modeling and animation with Blender. For vector graphics drawing, there's Dia, Inkscape and Xara. Desktop publishing is easily done using Scribus. For musicians, there are a number of multimedia players, CD/DVD burning packages, the GNU Solfege ear training package, the Hydrogen advanced drum machine, and two score editors, Canorus and NoteEdit.. There's also the Gnome sound recorder.

Finally, for developers and other power users, there are four major integrated development environments (IDEs): Anjuta, Eclipse, Mono and NetBeans. There are two web page editors, Bluefish and KompoZer.

In short, just about everything you need to get started with Linux is on this DVD. I highly recommend downloading it and trying it out!
Best Linux software for new users originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 30 Dec 2009 12:33:00 EST. When you ask about a free alternative to Windows Notepad, chances are good that Notepad ++ will be recommended to you. Another alternative which doesn't get mentioned as often is Notepad GNU.

It occupies the space in between Notepad and Notepad ++. Notepad GNU does offer loads of features, though not quite as many as Notepad ++. Which is fine, because plenty of people just want Notepad with a few tweaks like line numbers, bookmarks, and syntax highlighting. Notepad GNU does all that and more!

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the foreign language install menus - not a surprise, since the developer's site is in Russian. Click through, and you'll wind up with an English language interface when you launch the app.
Notepad GNU is Windows Notepad on steroids originally appeared on Download Squad on Tue, 29 Dec 2009 17:43:00 EST.
It's a misleading statistic, as I said: no one buys paper books online on Christmas Day -- people do, however, log in with their new Kindles and buy some ebooks. The actual number worth paying heed to is the sheer volume of Kindles that were sold or gifted this year -- a number that Amazon seems unwilling to divulge.

Estimates put their 2009 sales figures at over 500,00 units. Couple that with 390,000 books now available in the Kindle Store and you can see that this might be the beginning of the end for physical books. At the very least we may see a cut in the wholesale price of books. I've never really thought about it before, but book publishers don't have any competition: no one else can sell a paper-back edition of Harry Potter in any given market. A digital version of Harry Potter, with a ubiquitous reader like the Kindle would result in real, honest-to-God competition.

Amazon, as part of the same press release, also gave us some interesting stats and holiday sales numbers. The best one, I think, is that they shipped 7 million units in one day at the peak of the holiday season. They maxed out at 9.5 million items ordered in one day -- 110 per second. But go read the press release, if you want more.

Amazon sells more Kindle books than conventional tree-murderin' books originally appeared on Download Squad on Sun, 27 Dec 2009 11:00:00 EST. It's cross-platform, and it supports almost any e-book format you can think of. Calibre's latest trick is converting books to and from EPUB and PDB formats that work on Barnes and Noble's Nook e-reader. Version 0.6.27 of the app introduces this new feature, and it should turn at least a few Nook users on to how useful Calibre is.

Calibre isn't just a converter, although it works well in that respect. It's also a great way to organize your book library, transfer books to other devices, and read books on your PC. Calibre is compatible with this long list of book formats:

Input Formats: CBZ, CBR, CBC, EPUB, FB2, HTML, LIT, LRF, MOBI, ODT, PDF, PRC, PDB, PML, RB, RTF, TCR, TXT

Output Formats: EPUB, FB2, OEB, LIT, LRF, MOBI, PDB, PML, RB, PDF, TCR, TXT

Aside from the Nook and the Kindle, Calibre also works with iPhones, Android devices, and a host of less-popular e-reader devices. If you're into eBooks, it's a must-have app.
Despite all the hype about the iPhone and new Android devices, BlackBerry is still one of the most popular smartphones out there, so this represents a significant new market for Amazon. There hasn't been a big announcement about the BlackBerry app, but the San Francisco Chronicle broke the story last week.

Kindle for BlackBerry is listed as "coming soon" on Amazon's Kindle product page, but we don't have an exact timeline yet. Will BlackBerry users want to read Kindle books on the small screens of their devices? Maybe not, but Kindle's well-known brand name and large library of books means Amazon probably has a better shot than anyone else at marketing a BlackBerry e-reader.

Kindle for Mac is also listed as coming soon, which isn't a huge surprise after the PC version was released in November. No one seems to have gotten a peek at the Mac app yet, so, like the BlackBerry version, the best we can say about the timeline is "coming soon." Early reviews of the PC version of Kindle praised the seamless WhisperSync download experience, but bemoaned the lack of display settings. Knowing how Mac users love eye candy, Amazon may have to step up its game for a successful OS X release.
