Share is instead designed for sharing high-resolution photos and video with small groups or family and friends without having to send individual emails containing each item due to their size. Those who receive your photos can then decide what photos they want, and print out pictures they like at a quality resolution.

Memeo Share is offering a free lifetime use for the first 1,000 people to sign up for the beta with the public preview limited to 10,000 total sign ups. Even the de facto image editor Photoshop couldn't resist setting up shop. But sometimes you just want to simply resize or crop a photo and not be inadated with a multitude of tools and swatches. Enter picjuice, an online image editor with simplicity in mind.

As soon as you pull up the site it's clear that "ease of use" was the main objective here. The only tools available are Crop, Resize, Flip, Rotate and Adjust.

The controls for each tools are simple as well, depending on the tool selected you either get an A or B option, a slider or in the case of the Crop tool, a cross hair to select the area you want to use. These simple controls will aid in a shorter learning curve over the more feature rich sites.

In our testing we actually found the resizing tool here better than the one available from Photoshop Express. In Express, the resized image looked jagged but not in picjuice . However, the site seemed to be only compatible with JPG or PNG files as when we tried a GIF file picjuice would hang when we tried to edit the image.

Currently in beta, picjuice joins the already crowded online imaging arena. Hopefully, its limited get down to business attitude will help to differentiate itself from the competition.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Create panoramic photos and more at MagToo

Filed under: Design, Photo, Web services, Social Software, web 2.0

Sites like Flickr and Photobucket already have services that let you build slide shows, MagToo takes it a step further by also letting you create great panoramic shots to share with others.

Creating a panoramic image does require some thought before you start uploading. In order to get a quality panoramic image, MagToo recommends that your photos overlap by at least 20-50% and that you try to keep the camera level as possible. Once you've uploaded the photos, it's just a matter of clicking the "Stitch Photos" button and letting MagToo do the rest.

The main issue we had with the service is that Internet Explorer is required for the creation of the image. Hopefully in the future, the developers will add content creation support for other major browsers as well.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Get inspired with Moodstream

Filed under: Audio, Design, Internet, Photo, web 2.0

While Moodstream may be geared towards the folks in the creative department to help them design the next big thing, there's nothing wrong with using it as a screen saver. That is if you like a screen saver that doesn't actually save your screen and displays random pictures with music based on your current mood.

In order to get your mood on, you'll need to adjust a few sliders. Moods range from happy to sad, calm to lively, humorous to serious and so on. If that's more control than you would like, preset moods are also available.

Moodstream pulls in photos from Getty Images' vast database along with music from Pump Audio's Soundtrack. If you like the current mood you can save it to your moodboard (registration required) so you can come back to it later. You also have the option of purchasing any of the images or music on the spot.

So even if you're not the creative type but enjoy having random pictures and music playing give Moodstream a try.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hydra 1.5.3 (beta) for Aperture

Attempting to capture the different ranges you see with your eyes on camera is quite difficult. For the most part, digital cameras attempt to accurately capture an image but sometimes details are lost in the shadows or in the highlights. In high dynamic range (HDR) photography multiple photographs of varying exposures are taken of the same subject and later combined to produce a photo with a greater dynamic range than if only 1 photo was taken.

There are many ways to go about creating an HDR image and if you're an Aperture user, the folks at Creaceed may have a solution for you with their Hydra 1.5.3 plug-in. While currently wearing the beta badge, Hydra allows Aperture users to select up to 4 photos to create their HDR image and also offers the option to auto align your selected images, allowing you to take photos without the use of a tripod. This is an important feature, as when you are overlaying multiple photos it's important that they all line up perfectly. Controls are well laid out and results are fast and impressive.

While producing a quality HDR image is more than just having the right software, Hydra attempts to ease the post production work allowing you to concentrate on the most important part... what's happening through the lens.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dumpr: unfortunate name, neat photo effects

If you're no Photoshop guru, but you have fun applying different novelty filters to your pictures, you might like Dumpr. It's web-based, very simple to use, and has a pretty decent library of effects: sketch, Lomo, reflection and jigsaw puzzle, to name a few. You can upload photos from your own hard drive, or paste in URLs from some of the major photo hosting services, including Flickr and MySpace.

Dumpr isn't really meant for advanced users, although buying a Pro account will get you access to a few more effects. Despite the ... interesting ... choice of name, Dumpr is pretty fun to play with, and it's great for quickly doing things to photos that would take a while for a novice to learn in Photoshop. It also has a few Flickr-specific features, like searching for pictures similar to your favorites, and rating Flickr photos. We're still not sure about telling our friends we're going to Dumpr some photos of them, though.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Let Flickr spice up your wallpaper with DeskLickr

Filed under: Design, Fun, Photo, Macintosh
DeskLickr sounds like that kid we knew in first grade who would take any dare, but it's actually a neat little app with an unfortunately silly name. DeskLickr grabs desktop pictures from Flickr, making sure your wallpaper is never stale. It can change your desktop manually or automatically, and give you a little "about this photo" info, so you know whose picture it is and where to find it on Flickr.

There are plenty of options to make sure you get only the pictures you want. You can tell DeskLickr to grab from all of Flickr, from a group of your choice, just from Flickr's "interesting" selection, or from your own photos or favorites. If you don't like a picture, you can tell DeskLickr not to show it again.

Regular Download Squad readers will note that app is similar in function and effect to another one we recently reviewed, Desktoptopia. To compare: Desktoptopia uses its own image feeds, which are consistently full of great desktops, while DeskLickr offers a broader range with a little more hit-and-miss involved. Also: Desktoptopia is available for both Mac and PC, so if you're running Windows, you may want to scope out our earlier post.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

RIM releases mobile Flickr app for Blackberry handsets

Filed under: Fun, Internet, Photo, Blogging, Web services, Freeware, Social Software, BlackBerry

Does your Blackberry do enough for you? RIM thinks it could do just a little more, so it released an official mobile Flickr uploader for Blackberry handsets. The program allows Flickr-Blackberry hybrid addicts to snap pics, tag/geo-tag pics, place pics in albums, and adjust pic sizes. When you're all set and ready, posting the photo is a matter of a few button presses.

We recommend Flickr users with Blackberry handsets at least try it since it's free, and we can imagine the service being useful in a wide variety of situations including blogging, of course. It's probably more useful as a toy than a tool -- an easy way to share vacation photos on-the-go, great concert moments, fun party events, etc.

This is quite different from RIM's usual behavior, which is centered around productivity and business rather than recreation. The program's existence is likely a response to the recent surge of unique services accompanying successful, fun-based handsets (Sidekick, Helio Ocean, LG Voyager, iPhone, etc). Though it's not the most amazing thing to come from RIM, at least it's better than a useless MySpace app or another YouTube uploader... been there, done that, not impressed.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

CloudFire Invites Part Deux

Filed under: Audio, Internet, Photo, Video, Windows, Macintosh, P2P
So in our last post about the P2P media sharing site CloudFire, y'all jumped in and answered our question about BitTorrent's Bram Cohen.

This time around, there are no questions to answer. It's first come, first serve.

We have 100 invites to the first lucky folks who use "downloadsquad" without quotes naturally to sign up here.

We've had a bit of a play with CloudFire and the things that jump right out to us is that it seriously is easy to share media files with people who might not be as geeky as a lot of us are. And you know what, us geeky people like easy things too, that's why a lot of us use Macs.

There are some random issues as expected, and you have to make sure that the person connecting to your media has the most updated version of Flash, but other than that it works nicely. A good amount of bandwidth on your end doesn't hurt either.

They're completely open to your feedback and have been asking us what we think.

It's still very pre-beta and stealthy so here's your chance to join in!

UPDATE: If the code doesn't work then you might not have gotten in on the 100 invites. If we get more, we'll pass along the word!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Polar Rose plug-in: facial recognition in your browser?

Filed under: Internet, Photo, Utilities, Productivity, Web services, Search, web 2.0

Though it is currently accessible only to a closed set of beta testers, it seems the 22 minds behind Polar Rose are trying to create a sort of "Google" for people pictures -- a system that is always indexing visual information. But that's only the beginning of the service.

Beta testers have recently been given access to an Internet Explorer and Firefox plug-in that will scan faces on a loaded web-page, placing an orange or red rose icon in the lower right-hand corner of every face on the page. The color of the icon depends on whether or not the system can stick a name to the face, and this is determined by whether or not the face has been registered with the system. Any unnamed faces can be registered with the system from there, though, don't expect miracles. The plug-in struggles with low-quality or poorly lit photos.

This is "cool," of course, and we tend to like advanced stuff like this even if it's not personally useful to us. But what happens if a web-user doesn't want his/her face indexed? As is often with new technology/services (stop-light cameras, Google, Facebook, RFID cards, etc.) this may one day begin to spark the paranoia of privacy rights activists -- assuming it gets big enough to get noticed by less nerdy common folk.

[via BLORGE]

And not just to the web, but in a very lovely and seamless way based on the screens we've seen. They really want to make P2P mainstream. This is quite a hurdle to jump.

Their "manifesto" states that media shouldn't be a chore. It should be easy to create and share everything that you make to show other people. They want to make the act of uploading media files to outside servers extinct.

Rock on!

But when will we get to see it and play around for ourselves?

Now's the time. We were able to sleuth some invites to their private beta. Ok, they emailed them to us.

Just for you guys, the DLS faithful.

"But what do we have to do to get such an invite" you ask?

Well it's quite simple. Be one of the first 5 people to correctly answer the following question and you get the invite.

Who wrote a parody of a manifesto in 2001 that also has their hand in P2P?

UPDATE: Wow, that was fast. All 5 invites gone. Correct answer? Bram Cohen, creator of BitTorrent! We'll let you know if we get some more invites.

Well, RoundPic.com hopes to help by letting you round off the corners of any image in just a few seconds. You can select which corners to round, the quality of the rounded image, the round size, background color for rounded corners, and even if you want it exported as a transparent PNG image. We should note, however, that RoundPic.com doesn't actually host the image file, you will be required to download the saved image when you finish.

So, there is only one question remaining that we should all ask ourselves: in a world with rounded corners, will other shapes get jealous?

[via Mashable!]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SuperLame is KindOfFun, and makes comic bubbles

SuperLame isn't exactly a name that inspires confidence, but it's actually a fun web app. If our review of Comiq Life Magiq caught your eye, but you don't run OS X or don't have a need for so many features, SuperLame is perfect for you. It creates customized dialogue bubbles with no fuss, and it's flash-based, so anyone can use it.

One of the most obvious things we liked about SuperLame is that it lets you place bubbles outside the borders of your uploaded image. If your dog has a lot to say in that picture, SuperLame isn't going to get in his way. The other features you'd expect are all there: background and border colors, font selection, different styles of balloons ("the thinking one" and "the action one," naturally), and resizing. If you have a picture that needs the superhero treatment, you could do much worse than SuperLame.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Auto wallpaper multiple monitors with...AutoWallpaper

Are you lucky enough to have more than one monitor on your computer? Sure it looks cool, and it's fun to show off to friends..but it's very helpful with productivity too.

What's the first thing you do when you set up a new machine or monitor? Throw up fresh new wallpaper of course! Your mom, your cat, or your wife or girlfriend (hopefully not both, awkward!).

AutoWallpaper comes from a company called AlternativeRealities Software. It solves the multi-monitor / multi-wallpaper problem.

It's out for Windows and Mac and only costs $10. It's well worth it because you can not only manage wallpapers on your monitors, you can add effects and gradients as well.

My favorite feature though? Set your wallpapers to change whenever you want. That's right, if you want new wallpapers at exactly 9pm, you can do it.

Give it a shot and drop a link to a screenshot of your hot new wallpaper in the comments!

[Hat tip to snowbear]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Photosharing - comparing Flickr, Photobucket and Zooomr

Filed under: Internet, Photo, Video, Features, Social Software, web 2.0

How do you do decide which photosharing site to go with? If free is your criteria, there are certainly many options to choose from. Most free photo sharing sites are ad supported and come with a certain GB capacity limit. If you upgrade to a pro account, which can run anywhere from $20-$25 per year, there are typically no limits and no advertisements.

We took a look at the most popular photosharing sites' features and did a comparison to help you decide which photo site is best suited for your needs. We compared Flickr, Photobucket and Zooomr and then test drove each of the sites to see how well they did. Check out our unscientific findings after the jump.

Continue reading Photosharing - comparing Flickr, Photobucket and Zooomr

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Fotosizer: A free batch image resizer

Filed under: Photo, Utilities, Windows, Freeware
Fotosizer is a free batch image resizer for Windows. The tagline for Fotosizer is "batch image resizing made easy," and we couldn't agree more.

In the Fotosizer interface, you have the option to select individual files or entire folder. You can also include sub-folders with a simple click. Once you've selected the images you wish to resize, you can resize them in one of three ways: custom size, using a percentage of the original, or using a preset size.

Set your destination folder, output format, and filename mask, and hit Start. That's all there is to it.

In our tests, Fotosizer needs about a second for every file to be resized. Combine the program's quickness with the time you will save by not having to individually resize all of your images, and you might just have enough extra time in your day to boil an egg, or write a Twitter post. Heck, two Twitter posts, even.

Fotosizer is a free download, and Windows only.

[via gHacks]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Photoshop Express gets Flickr support

Filed under: Internet, Photo, News, web 2.0

The Photoshop Express public beta launched about six weeks ago and other than some early concerns about the ToS, we continue to be impressed with the service. Today, Adobe has added a number of new features to the service, including support for Flickr.

At the conference call in March, we asked Adobe about their plans for integrating Photoshop Express with other web services and they assured us Flickr support was on the way. It's available now and we think it adds a lot of value to both services. Now you can download your Flickr photos directly into Photoshop Express for cropping, color correction, digital effects, etc. Photos edited with Photoshop Express can be immediately re-exported/uploaded to Flickr all in one seamless step.

Additionally, Adobe has added a new "Save As" feature so that you can save multiple versions of a photo in addition to the original image. Adobe has also introduced a new embeddable media player for photo slideshows that can be used with Facebook, MySpace and other social media sites.

Adobe Photoshop Express is free and available now.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Flickrfs and DFO, just in case there is a Flickrpocalypse

Filed under: Photo, Utilities, Linux, Yahoo!, Open Source
Ah, Flickr. How we love you. We loved the idyllic pre-Yahoo! days, and held back our tears with the Yahoo! phase of growth. But even when things seem so good, we wonder what the future holds. Microsoft? AOL? An undead uprising?

Now couple our fears with our stupidity. All those photos we uploaded over the past year or two? The ones housed safely on our hard drive? Yeah, right... the hard drive we, in our infinite wisdom, managed to reformat during a routine upgrade?

Flickr, you are our only hope. You hold our memories safe and secure on a server bank. Somewhere. And it's not that we don't trust you. It's Microsoft, AOL, and zombies we have problems with. Sure, some of us could do a mass download from your servers on to our machines. But for others, there's that Microsoft thing again.

We use Linux, and but for one word, we'd be horribly out of luck.

Continue reading Flickrfs and DFO, just in case there is a Flickrpocalypse

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Google releases Picasa 2.7 for Linux

Filed under: Photo, News, Linux, Google, Freeware

Google has released Picasa version 2.7 for Linux, which promises many of the same improvements of the PC version, including (drum roll, please) uploading and downloading from Picasa Web Albums.

Further improvements include:

Folder hierarchy views: Browse explorer-style through your photos

Save edits to disk: Including batch saving

Improvements to importing: You can now import into an existing folder.

Better RAW support

And much more. So if you're still running version 2.2 of Picasa for Linux, head on over to Google and download the latest and greatest. Picasa should run on any x86-compatible Linux system.

So, with Linux getting some love, what does this mean for Mac users? Absolutely nothing. The Google camp remains mum about the possibility of Picasa for the Mac, and all we have to assure us is the over-enthusiastic promise of a t-shirt wearing publicist.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
