So what do you have to look forward to?

From a viewer's standpoint, there are several new features of interest. Tops among them: advanced 3d effects - that's right, Flash now supports shaders. Web gamers rejoice, because this no doubt means a whole new era of addictive browser-based gaming.

Sound APIs have been refined as well, which should provide a boost not only for games, but also for streaming media applications. Also along these lines, Flash 10 support dynamic bitrate adjustments. Translation: it'll adapt to crappy network conditions automatically so that your video doesn't get all choppy.

Continue reading Adobe Updates Flash 10 Beta - Now Slightly Less Inefficient!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe makes Flash searchable, Flash designers rejoice

Filed under: Developer, Adobe, Google, Yahoo!, Search
UPDATE: E.W. Scripps SEM Manager Paul Petersen weighs in on the SEO impact of Adobe and Google's announcement.

Adobe's Flash technology has long been the bane of efforts to create a Web site or application that can be indexed by Google, Yahoo! or other search engines. What it lacked in search engine optimization (SEO), Flash made up in offering designers an infinite playground for creating rich-media apps, games and video.

But what good is an application that users can't find?

Yesterday, Adobe and the two search engine leaders came out with an answer: A special Flash player that opens up content within applications and translates it for search engines. Flash content owners and search-engine users should notice results immediately.

This news was also mentioned in today's Googleholic.
Continue reading Adobe makes Flash searchable, Flash designers rejoice

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe launches Acrobat 9 and Acrobat.com online office suite

Filed under: Utilities, Web services, Adobe, web 2.0

Adobe has built a suite of online office applications to compliment Buzzword, the company's online word processor. We've covered Buzzword in the past. It's pretty, fast, and not really all that much more useful than similar products from Google or Zoho. Here's a rundown of the other applications you'll find at Acrobat.com:

ConnectNow: A web conferenceing tool that lets you share your desktop with others, chat, talk over a VoIP connection, or share files and mark up whiteboards.

Share: Selectively share files with other users. Adobe Share lets you send files to a list of contacts, and lets the recipients view PDF image, and video files online.

Create PDF: Seriously, do we need to tell you what this does?

My Files: Store and organize up to 5GB of files online.

You'll notice that Acrobat.com doesn't have a complete office suite. There are no spreadsheet or presentation applications. But that 5GB of free storage space is pretty attractive.

Adobe has also released Acrobat 9, an updated version of its desktop PDF reader. The biggest change in Acrobat 9 is support for embedded Flash, which means you might start finding PDF documents with embedded YouTube videos or other Flash content.<h6 style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; What's on your Web Overhaul Due Diligence To-Do List? What steps should you take to ensure that your site gets architected, designed, programmed, launched, and updated correctly?

HOMEWORK - let's start browsing sites and making favorites/bookmarks out of the ones that catch your eye. Note that you like the drop-down menu in one and the fading background in another. Make a "how did they do this?" list of snazzy features to ask your designer about implementing. In fact, build a spreadsheet and make column headings such as: URL, feature, forms, Flash, menus and more so you can keep your design notes and questions in a handy electronic document to share with all the design firms you interview, and we want you to talk to more than one.

Continue reading Seven Web Redesign Planning Tools

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe offers up some CS4 betas

Adobe, who only last week was denying Creative Suite 4 release date rumors (or that the next version of Photoshop will be called Photoshop CS4), has just released the first CS4 betas for three of their products. Early versions of the next-generation of Soundbooth, Dreamweaver and Fireworks are all available for download for both Mac and Windows (Soundbooth is only available for Intel Macs).

Dreamweaver and Fireworks were both part of Adobe's acquisition of Macromedia in 2005, and to us, neither program felt fully integrated with the existing Adobe products in CS3. The CS4 betas promise to provide better Creative Suite integration (especially for Fireworks users) as well as providing some great new features.

Dreamweaver now boasts a Live View Mode so that users can see real-time previews without having to leave the program. Fireworks features a new user interface and compatibility with other Adobe technologies. The big news with Soundbooth is support for multi-track editing.

The beta applications will be active for only 48 hours, unless you are an existing CS3 customer. If you already have a CS3 license for the product your are trying, you can continue to use the CS4 betas until the final release.

Thanks Kent!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pizza Hut hops onto the Adobe AIR bandwagon

Filed under: Windows, Macintosh, Web services, Adobe
Although some of the best-known Adobe AIR apps thus far are Twitter clients, you don't have to be a Twitter freak to get in on the action. In fact, you just have to be hungry for pizza. Pizza Hut has released a desktop pizza-ordering app , and it's built on AIR. If you thought AIR hadn't hit the mainstream yet, this might change your mind.

Pizza Hut Shortcut is basically a slicker-looking, easier to use version of the familiar online ordering system. It has the current specials built in, so you might be able to skip the "Googling for coupons" phase of the order. We suspect this app is targeted at true pizza addicts, because you can still order almost as easily from the web interface. Also, the feature that saves your last order for easy reordering was a bit of a giveaway.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Flash Player 10 beta available now

Adobe has just made the prerelease version of Flash Player 10 available for download. Almost as impressive as the player itself is the fact that the beta is available for Windows, OS X AND Linux (including Ubuntu support)!

For the full list of features and known issues, check out the release notes, but some of the highlights are:

New text engine

Ubuntu OS support

Custom filters and effects

Large bitmap support

Adobe's demo page for Flash Player 10 is pretty impressive; we especially liked the inverse kinematic and native 3D demos.

Adobe recommends uninstalling previous versions of Flash Player before installing 10 beta. Downloads are available here.

We're always on the lookout for good desktop Twitter clients. Because while the microblogging service is kind of useful as a web-based tool for sharing your thoughts, desktop clients make Twitter feel more like an instant messaging platform that allows you to communicate with hundreds, even thousands of people at once.

While there are a couple of excellent Twitter clients for Windows and OS X, Linux users have had a more limited selection. A few months ago we looked at gTwitter, an application for reading and sending Tweets from your Linux desktop. While gTwitter will get the job done, it lacks some of the features we use the most, like URL shortening and the ability to reply to tweets from other users with the click of a button.

So we were pretty excited when we read about Twitux, another Twitter client designed for Linux. Installation couldn't have been easier. We downloaded a deb file for Ubuntu, and our system automatically downloaded all the required dependencies and instlled Twtiux. And then we saw that it was almost as basic as gTwitter. Twitux gives you more control over your timeline view, allowing you to see the public timeline, your friends timeline, your own timeline, direct messages, or replies. But if you want to send a reply or direct message you'll have to do it manually. There's no option to click on a friends' name in the timeline and respond.

Fortunately, now that Adobe has released a version of their AIR platform for Linux, you can run popular AIR-based Twitter clients like Spaz and Twhirl, So while we're still kind of hoping that someone will develop a full-featured Twitter client that runs natively in Linux, we'll happily settle for the cross-platform Twhirl client. A new version of Twhirl was released this week with a few bug fixes and one major new feature: support for Friendfeed discussions.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nominate the best for the Flash Forward Film Festival

Filed under: Design, Games, Internet, Video, Adobe

Flashforward2008 is going to be in San Francisco this August.
Adobe's Flash player already powers YouTube, Hulu, and roughly 99% of all the video you see on the web. But apparently that isn't good enough for Adobe, because the company has launched the Open Screen Project, with the goal of creating a Flash standard that will work equally well on a variety of devices, including computers, cellphones, and set top boxes.

Adobe will be removing restrictions on the use of SWF and FLV formats, will publish device porting information for the Flash Player, and will remove licensing fees for the next releases of Adobe AIR and the Adobe Flash Player for devices. Currently you can get the computer versions for free, but you have to pay for the mobile versions.

In other words, Adobe is opening up its proprietary formats, releasing technical information, and generally making it a lot easier for developers to write Flash content that will play seamlessly on any device.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe launches Adobe Media Player

Adobe has officially launched its Adobe Media Player application which has been in public beta since last year. Adobe Media Player is a desktop application built on Adobe AIR that lets users watch streaming and downloaded web videos from content partners including CBS, PBS, MTV, Revision3, and Blip.tv.

The interface is slick, and it's clear that Adobe has put a lot of work into the media player since its beta days. Playback is no longer choppy and the content library is choc full of shows you might actually want to watch. Not as full as say, your cable box, but given the web video landscape, it's not bad.

Users can also add any online video to their player with an RSS feed. It took us a few minutes to find the "Add RSS" option, so we'll save you some trouble: It's in the "My Favorites" section.

Adobe has also launched Adobe TV, which is basically a web site filled with tutorials and other information about Adobe related products. You can either watch Adobe TV videos from the web or using Adobe Media Player.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe tweaks Photoshop Express image licensing terms

Filed under: Design, Internet, Photo, Web services, Adobe, web 2.0

When Adobe launched Photoshop Express last week, we were so excited to try out the powerful online image editing application that we didn't read the fine print very closely. But one of our readers was kind enough to point out the fact that Adobe reserved the right to do some interesting things with your photos.

Specifically, Adobe's terms of use stated that the company could "use, distribute, derive revenue or other renumeration from, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate" and use your images "in any format or medium now or later developed." Now, while it makes sense that users need to grant Adobe some non-exclusive rights to their images so Adobe doesn't get accused of any wrongdoing by publishing your images on the web, the whole making money off of your images even after you remove them from your account thing seemed like a bit much and led to a few complaints.

Now Adobe has revised its terms of use. And while the company still has the right to display and distribute your content, the new terms clearly state that Adobe does not have the right to sell your content or to use it at all once you remove it from your account. And if you want to prevent Adobe from displaying your image publicly in the first place, all you have to do is refrain from clicking the share option.

[via Gizmodo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe AIR for Linux alpha released

Filed under: Internet, Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Web services, Adobe, Beta, web 2.0

Adobe has released a public alpha of Adobe AIR for Linux, which means you can now run applications built using the Adobe Integrated Runtime on Windows, Mac, and Linux machines. Adobe AIR is an environment that lets user run online applications offline. For example, here are a few of our favorite AIR applications:

Twhirl - Desktop client for Twitter

Xdrive Lite - Application for accessing AOL's Xdrive online storage service

Google Analytics Reporting Suite - Application for viewing and interacting with Google Analytics data

eBay Desktop - Manage your eBay auctions

Adobe is also joining the Linux Foundation today, joining other companies including HP, Google, and Nokia. The group encourages Linux development, and the addition of Adobe AIR could really step things up a bit, since developers can now create applications for a single platform and have them run on Windows, Mac, and Linux boxes.

[via CNet]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Adobe Photoshop Express Beta launches

Filed under: Design, Internet, Photo, Features, Web services, Adobe, web 2.0

Gallery: Photoshop Express Beta

Digital photography has become a way of life for lots and lots of web users and there is no shortage of services out there to host your digital pictures (Flickr, SmugMug, Picasa, Windows Live Spaces, not to mention social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace). As more and more day-to-day computing tasks move to the cloud, the market really needs a solid, web-based editing suite. With Adobe Photoshop Express, which launched its beta today, we get just that.

We look at a lot of web software and services, but have to say that Photoshop Express one of the slickest web-based applications for photos that we have ever used. Although services in the past like Picasa or Picnik have offered some basic photo editing capabilities, what Photoshop Express is doing is in a completely different league. Like many other photo services, Photoshop Express will let you share and display your online photos; each user account is given 2 GB of space to store and share photos (this is free, additional space and extra features will be available in the future, pricing TBD) and you can embed links to the Photoshop Express hosted galleries or direct-embed individual images.
Continue reading Adobe Photoshop Express Beta launches

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

You Suck at Photoshop - a series of tutorials

Filed under: Design, Fun, Video, Adobe, Imaging Tips
Okay, just admit it. You know you want to. We can admit it, so we're sure you can. You want us to do it for you? Alright then, here it is:

You suck at Photoshop.

See, it wasn't so bad, was it?

The truth is, most people suck at Photoshop. But most of us also wish that we sucked a little less at it. Luckily, if your ego can handle it, Donnie Holye has created a hilarious and educational series of Photoshop tutorials titled You Suck at Photoshop.

These videos aren't for the faint of heart. Donnie has been known to use more than the odd bit of profanity, and some of the subject matter might be off-putting to our more sensitive readers. But if you have the fortitude for it, You Suck at Photoshop is an entertaining way to pick up a new Photoshop technique.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Windows Mobile to support Flash

Filed under: Internet, Windows Mobile, Adobe, Microsoft
iPhone, eat your heart out.

According to early news reports Monday, Microsoft has licensed Adobe Flash Lite for Windows Mobile devices. Essentially, Flash Lite will become a plug-in for Pocket IE, so that users can view embedded Flash content on their Windows Mobile devices. Adobe claims that up to 80% of Flash pages will work using the Flash Lite plugin and Pocket IE.

This also means that future Windows Mobile devices will support both Flash and Silverlight.

Flash, Silverlight: it's starting to sound like a group of superheroes around here.

Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn't yet said when it plans to support Adobe Flash Lite on Windows Mobile devices, and it hasn't given out any dates regarding support for Silverlight either. But at least they stuck their neck out and said that they would support it; which means, eventually, they'll have to deliver on that promise.

[via AppScout]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Using WINE to install Adobe AIR on Linux

Adobe hasn't officially ported Adobe AIR to Linux yet, but Ubuntu Unleashed figured out that you can install AIR using the WINE windows emulation layer for Linux. Installation isn't exactly painless, and when all is said and done, there are a bunch of AIR applications that won't run. But some will.

Note that the instructions at Ubuntu Unleashed tell you how to install Adobe AIR beta 3. But read on and we'll show you how to install Adobe AIR 1.0.
Continue reading Using WINE to install Adobe AIR on Linux

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

eBay Desktop 1.0 released

Filed under: Business, Utilities, Adobe, Freeware
What a time for 1.0. Hot on the heels of Adobe's official release of AIR version 1.0 comes the 1.0 version of eBay Desktop. The two releases are so close you would think the makers of eBay Desktop planned it (which of course they did).

eBay Desktop 1.0 provides a desktop alternative to the eBay website - you can use it to search, browse, bid, keep track of your auctions, and more. And because it uses Adobe AIR, it runs on both Windows (XP and Vista) and Max OS X (10.4 and 10.5).

The eBay Desktop installer weighs in around 7 MB (the AIR installer is included if you don't have it installed on your system already). Install was quick and easy, though getting the program to run was a little more work: on our test Mac, the program kept crashing until we went to the Applications folder and opened the program manually.

When you first start the program, you'll be met with a nifty little video introduction to the eBay desktop. The eBay desktop home page allows you to track all your bidding and watching activity, and there are separate tabs for finding items, tracking and paying for your winning bids, and a feeds tab.

eBay has put a lot of work into this desktop application, and it shows. The interface is clean and very intuitive. The one major drawback is the lack of features for sellers. You can't track the items you're selling or your past sales. At this time, eBay desktop is definitely a buyer's tool.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
