This is a beta release and they have put up a slick user feedback mechanism for you to use in telling them how to make it better and what features rock (pardon the pun).

Yahoo! NewsOne aspect of the Yahoo! experience that always left me shaking my head is the News Message Boards. Easily accessible from a "Discuss" link at the bottom of news stories, it was the stomping grounds of trolls and other hate mongers with little to no social value, unless of course you are a troll.

But now I say, "Hallelujah!" Break out the bubbly and do a little jig on the table because the powers that be at Yahoo! News have shut down the News Message Boards. The "Discuss" link has been replaced with a link labeled, "What happened to the "Discuss" option?" The message at the other end of that link takes you to a short explanation of how the boards were dominated by a few, links were difficult to embed and something bigger and better is soon to replace the old board system: "Over the next few months, we plan to offer new discussion forums based on topics in the news and incorporating the latest features to foster a better discussion for all of our readers."

Will it be an implementation of the new Yahoo! Message Board system or something digg/Netscape-like? Will it combine Yahoo! 360 blogging platform to be more like Newsvine? We'll have to wait and see.

Yahoo! Mail Beta searchToday, Ryan Kennedy demonstrated why he's the right guy to be the Yahoo! Mail Beta evangelist. One of the best-kept secrets within the new Yahoo! Mail Beta have been the search shortcuts. We've learned a little about them from Josh here and in Ryan's post today at the Y! Mail Updates blog. The second best-kept secret? While holding down the Ctrl button, click on the Subject line of a viewed email. This generates a search result with all emails with the same subject line. A threaded view of sorts.

Y! TV Screencap

Yahoo! Go is the next generation of Yahoo! properties. It includes Y! Go Mobile for cell phone users, Y! Go Desktop for PC users (yet to be released) and Y! Go TV for television and multimedia PC users.

Y! Go TV (beta) was released a few months ago shortly following Y!'s acquisition of Meedio. The implementation was a stripped down version of Meedio's basic DVR product and was made available to US users as Y! Go TV for free.

Recently an upgrade to Y! Go TV was rolled out with several improvements but still as a beta.

  • Picture in picture viewing capabilities
  • View personal Flickr photostreams
  • Support for more tuner/capture cards
  • Overall user experience improvements (responsive and consistency of menus and navigation, video player and network experience)
  • Movie recommendations
  • Ability to access shared music from your local network

This latest upgrade supports many more tuners and the interface does appear more quick to respond and more intuitive to use compared with the original release.

Free streaming stock quotes have made an appearance on Yahoo! Finance with little to no fanfare. Above the charts on the individual stock pages and on Yahoo Finance's front page you will see . Click the "On" button provides a drop down display of streaming stock price information. Click on the "?" and learn that you can leave this open for up to 25 minutes and although these are streaming, they are not "real-time". They are delayed 15 minutes.

Streaming quotes has only been offered with real-time information as part of a Yahoo Finance premium service package.

Yahoo! NewsIt was almost a year ago when Yahoo! began including blogs as a subset of it's Y! News search results pages. Tonight I have notice that they are missing. There was a struggle as whether to include them within the News Search results or segregate them as was finally decided. I wonder if the battle with this decision is continuing.

No clues anywhere about not including them in search results anymore. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?


Updated 8/27/06 - I received information that this move was the result of the rampant splog problem and only a trickle of click-through traffic. Thus the overhead to operate it wasn't justified.

Second update 8/27/06: Greg Jarboe blogs: Brian Nelson, a Yahoo spokesperson, called me back to say the Blogs beta had been "temporarily taken offline to retool the offering."

So it depends on whether you believe internal communications or the PR group.

Yahoo!'s Richard Bangs Adventures
After a year's presence on Yahoo!, the Richard Bangs Adventures travelogue couldn't locate the minimum million followers it needed to continue. As a result, Yahoo! is pulling the plug on it.

Bangs and Kevin Sites were the poster children for Yahoo!'s exclusive content campaign last year. The Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone war zone commentary was able to garner the minimum traffic needed to continue on.

So far no other Yahoo! exclusive content contributors are reported to be discontinued.

Yahoo! Photos new version

The new Yahoo! Photos user interface is being made available to US users. The migration of accounts began tonight and is expected to take a while. It become available in a limited beta back in June and has now completed that phase.

The new version boasts of drag-and-drop features, tagging, dynamic albums, sharing, commenting and enhanced searching. Also included is the ability to download full-size photos without needing to be a premium services subscriber as it was before.

There are two features from the previous version which I feel are sorely lacking from the new. If I want to grant access to my photos to a friend, then I must send them an email explicitly sharing the photos or album with them. Before, I merely indicated which Y! IDs could see photos in an album. This could be a deal breaker for me and cause me to give Flickr another look. Secondly, the frame choices are cheesy at best and lack the feathering options (frosting the edges to create a soft edge instead of a hard edge to the photo). I used the feathering frame types many times and rarely used the other frames at all.

All-in-all, this is a tremendous jump forward for the Y! Photos property. Kudos to the team!

Y! Answers Question ToolbarSomething new has appeared at Yahoo! Answers. A rating toolbar for each question and for each answer. These provide the ability to quickly click on a "thumbs up/down" to rate each question/answer. There's a button to "report" the question/answer for abuse, another to email the question to a friend and another to add it to your "watch" list, MyWeb, de.licio.us, MyYahoo! or any other RSS reader.

That's all good and well, but how is this going to improve the community at Y! Answers? The Y! Answers blog says this will help "identify content that is valuable to the community" but does it bring it to the forefront while burying the crud? I don't see this happening now but hopefully it will happen soon.

Train wreckAccording to James Derk in his Scripps Howard syndicated column, Yahoo! Answers is now a disaster. He says it was once useful but now is overrun with spam, chat-happy posters and others who simply disregard the guidelines knowing there will be little to no retribution.

I have to agree, sort of. It hasn't become the putrid cesspool the Yahoo! News Message Boards are, but can I see it coming.

Yahoo!Several months ago I recommended to a group that we use Yahoo! Groups to set up a mail list and group communication site. A few in the group rolled their eyes and with a great deal of emotion said something to the effect of, "That means you have to set up a Yahoo! ID and then tolerate all the xxxx that comes with it." I was stunned. The "what" that comes with it? I've had and used the same Y! ID since the late 1990's and haven't had any stuff to put up with.

People have several different IDs to access their accounts at gmail, digg, technorati, webshots, bloglines, goowy, etc. Isn't there value to having one ID that accomplishes all that (Y! Mail, Y! Photos or flickr, MyYahoo!, MyWeb, etc.)

There are those who don't or won't bother to change their marketing settings (which you use to opt in/out out of third-party offers and Yahoo! communications). I would guess those folks see "unsolicited" email that they weren't expecting nor want.

What are the reasons that keep you from getting a Yahoo! ID?

Add to My Yahoo!Have you ever tried to click on the "Add to My Yahoo!" button while in Yahoo! News, Yahoo! Search results pages or some other Y! property only have have it say the feed is invalid? That's a big WTF moment for me that has happened time and time again. Very frustrating.

I recently installed the new Firefox 2.0 beta 1 release and noticed it can subscribe "web feeds" (aka RSS feeds) to your RSS reader (either Bloglines, iGoogle/Google Reader, My Yahoo or a program on your computer) when you click the RSS or XML button on the page or the one that appears via auto-discovery in Firefox's address bar. Go to "Tools - Options... - Choose Feed Reader" to configure.

I didn't think much about this until I encountered another WTF moment. I clicked on the RSS icon in my address bar and viola! It was accepted when the "Add to My Yahoo" button attempt was refused. Sweet!

You could say Firefox does Add to My Yahoo! function better than Yahoo! does.

Yahoo! NewsFor I don't know how long, Yahoo! News has provided the means to rate (aka recommend) news stories. It's not a simple "thumbs up/down" but a five-star scale. At the top of each topic page at Yahoo! News you can find links to "Most emailed," "Most viewed," and "Most recommended."

I have started noticing how some photos on Yahoo! News now appear with a new option New - Purchase Photo. So far it appears that these are limited to AFP distributed photos, but not all AFP photos have this new option.

Mug shotThere is one photo of a magazine cover which I first saw this with. I called my wife over and we debated over whether it would make a better gift as a t-shirt, mouse pad, tile, or on a coffee cup. As you can see, it works great on a coffee cup.

Won't those on my Christmas list be surprised this year.

Yahoo! Music JukeboxYahoo! Music Engine is now called Yahoo! Music Jukebox (haven't I heard that name before?). This name change coincides with the roll out of new features and a premium "Plus" version.

According to the press release, Yahoo! Music Jukebox will be enhanced with:

  • New Audio Equalizer: A new 5-band equalizer allows users to adjust the sound of their favorite music in a convenient fashion.
  • Usability Enhancements: An overall new look of Yahoo! MusicJukebox has made key functions more accessible through consistent right click and tick menus. Users can quickly play a selection of an artist's top tracks with just one click. The improved application makes moving the Yahoo! BuddahbotBuddhabots have begun making appearances on Yahoo! Answers. Buddhabots' artificial intelligence is being demonstrated according to it's creator. "The Buddhabot is the first and only AI to compete with human beings to provide the best answers on Yahoo Answers new social networking site."

Ron Ingram is the human behind Buddhabots and according to his blog, "I look for questions randomly and let the Buddhabot respond on my behalf." This leaves me to believe Buddhabot isn't scanning Y! Answers and responding faster than a human could which would be rather irritating. It has answered 100 questions over the past three weeks and, to its credit, eleven have been chosen as the "Best Answer." I, a mere human, have a 57% "Best Answer" rate. Phew.

Yahoo! Finance Charts Beta

Earlier this week Yahoo! announced changes that would roll out soon to upgrade aspects of the Yahoo! Finance property. One of these changes, and probably the most significant for daily users, is the completely overhauled Stock Charts.

When Google rolled out Google Finance property, most of the hubbub around their offering was the dynamic charts. These hadn't been seen before anywhere and had a lot of "kewl" factor in them. Even without the kewl charts, Yahoo! continued to be the most comprehensive and most visited financial resource on the web. Y! Messenger PluginsThe new beta version of Yahoo! Messenger with Voice (version 8) lets users attach special use plugins. There were several available when the beta version was rolled out and today several more were made available in the Yahoo! Application Gallery.

Yahoo! Scribbler - It does just what the name says, it lets you scribble. When you and you chatting friend launch it, you can collaborate on a whiteboard. It also lets you drop in a photo from Flickr and doodle on it. And, if your work is worth it, you can save and store it to your Flickr account.

iTunes Remote - Erm, it's a remote for iTunes. Requires iTunes.

Yahoo! News - This plugin was one of the initial offerings. Maybe this is a new version? Gallery listing says it's only hours old. Lets you quickly browse news categories and zoom in on stories within Messenger.

Yahoo! Sports Gamechannel - This is my personal favorite. It lets you see the current US Major League Baseball stats and action within a smartly designed space. Cute animation and easy to read text tells you everything about the game being viewed. Also includes current scores and stats around the league. This was released a while back and is presumably an updated version. Lets hope it handle US football just as well.

And, by the way, plugins work in the Windows version of Y! Messenger but not the Mac version... yet.

Yahoo! announced in a press release that many long-awaited upgrades were soon to appear on Yahoo! Finance, albeit some only in beta form.

Stock Charts - Google showed us that they could beat Yahoo! to the punch with their Ajaxy charting tools. Unfortunately for Google, the financial users are a pragmatic bunch and need more than the "kewl" factor to make them switch as indicated by Yahoo! continuing to hold the financial users' interest. According to this recent announcement, Y! Finance users will soon be enjoying new kewl dynamic charting tools which take advantage of Flash and DHTML . It pays to be patient, eh?

Message boards - Yahoo! has been upgrading its message boards throughout its many sites for many months now. Yahoo! Finance has seen some of these changes already. Easier search, threaded views and now a rating system to quickly locate quality contributors to the conversation.

Y! Finance Badge - Y! Finance badges for your website have been out in beta for a while now but according to this announcement are out of beta and available for general consumption.

Y! Finance Videos - Y! has made huge advances recently in its ability to serve video regardless of where it is hosted. This is spreading to various Y! sites including Y! Finance. Today's announcement points out that video from several news sources are being made available via the Y! Finance site.

The new stock charts are being evasive. Hopefully we will see them in action soon even if only on a beta version of the Y! Finance site.


UPDATE: The new chart tools are being rolled out to small percentage of users for now. This is much as the ! home page revision was revealed to only a few users for their feedback before opening it up to all Y! home page visitors. More Y! Finance users can expect to see the new chart tools as time goes by.
