Firefox for Android pre-release now available for download
Our friend Brad Linder, over at Mobiputing, says that the build that's going around right now is optimized for Droid, and doesn't run quite so smoothly on his Nexus One. He also points out that you'll need to copy the .apk file to your phone's SD card and use a file explorer app to complete the install. It's called "GeckoApp," by the way, which is a reference to the Gecko rendering engine used in Firefox.
If you're not amongst the brave early-adopters who want to download and install a prerelease app, you can still scope out the video after the jump for a visual taste of Firefox on Android.

The Illusionist's Dream is a simple platformer; you play as a magician who needs to get through each level by transforming into any number of animals that you encounter along the way.
Each animal can do different things; the butterfly can obviously fly, but if it encounters a frog, the frog eats it, and you have to start over again. There's also a fox that runs fast and leaps far, but it eats any rabbits that cross its path. That means that, if you may need to be a rabbit later on, you need to take that into account ...

I'm all for Firefox coming to Android, but this pre-release isn't worth sending out to the public in any way, shape or form. It runs of absolute ass. Be advised.

How did you get it? The site won't let me download it without a password.

The site is requiring authentication to download those files.
Maybe get a better link up?

Maybe look at the site?
Granted it's in German, but still, you can clearly see the username and password written in German that might as well be English.

Not worth downloading at all. It seems like I'm just using a desktop version of firefox on a underpowered and very small machine. It doesn't really even look like the one in the video.
Wtf?

"Optimized" for Droid, my ass. This runs like crap. First time I tried starting it, the thing froze my phone. Now it starts...after a while...and runs terrible. Why would anyone even release this? It's terrible.
It has promise, to be sure. I can SEE the features on it will be great...you know...when the browser is actually usable.
