Finally, serious competition for iTunes...from Sony!
They've been awfully quiet the last couple of years, except for the recent PS3 price reduction and slow drip-feed of good games. But it seems, after the appointment of a new CEO back in 2006, the results of some internal reshuffling might finally be coming to fruition! There's no name for the new software reported on by BusinessWeek. There's also very few details of the functionality Sony's iTunes-killer will actually utilize to draw people away from Apple's soft, white allure and into their black, serious grasp.
BusinessWeek suggests that the software will try to differentiate itself from iTunes by including Picasa- and YouTube-like functionality, allowing users to upload videos and photos from their (Sony?) cameras. Other than that... who knows what Sony has up their sleeves?
Sony are huge however -- multi-national robber-baron 'XBox' huge -- with an additional vast library of music and movies. They also have a large installed base of PlayStation owners (that's fast increasing!) It wouldn't be a surprise to see some kind of 'PlayStation App Store' included in Sony's new software.
We shall see!

I don't know if this is a labor of love or merely the brainchild of four very gifted games designers, but Level Up is a really weird mash-up of gaming elements that you have probably never seen in a Flash game before.
Let's start with the premise itself: Groundhog Day meets Memento. The game experience revolves around 'days': you explore the world and the clock slowly ticks towards the evening. You bounce around picking up gems and talking to the denizens of 'Level Upland'. Eventually you feel tired and head back to ...

Your "BusinessWeek" link goes to a Telegraph story about a woman swallowing 78 items of cutlery!

Hahaha.
...
Oops.
Does anyone else get that problem when they hit ctrl-c but the old item on the clipboard remains...? :P

I get that sometimes... but more importantly, I want to see the old link more than the new, correct one =p

Sony already has an app store - it's called the Playstation network and it's been around before the iPhone one.

Hm, I thought that might be the case, but I have heard so little about it that I figure it isn't doing very well/isn't very good?

It's quite good and how successful it is, I'm not sure. Most people I know that own a Playstation product enjoy it.
It is accessible from both the PS3 and the PSP. Sony released a version of the PSP called the PSP Go that gets its games, media and software almost exclusively from the Playstation Network.

Well I don't think you could technically call Playstation Network an app store. It sells games and movies but I can't go in there and buy a facebook app for example to add to my system. I think this could be a step in an interesting direction but i'm not sure how practical this will all be in the long run. I've got my computer a mere few feet from my ps3 so I personally don't have any need to upload any videos or pics I have to my youtube or picasa accounts. If I was Sony i'd stick to netflix i'd bring on hulu support and stick to things that work on a home multimedia setup and not stuff I can or would rather do on my computer. Just my two cents on the matter.

Sounds sensible enough :)
I think their plan must be to be squeeze more out of their current hardware. They've been a hardware (and games) company for so long... but nothing else really.
If they can make their PS3s and PSPs do a bit more...

My thoughts exactly. I can't imagine browsing for music is going to be very fun using a controller. Then there's the problem of getting it onto a mobile device (not everyone owns a PSP). And for some reason, I doubt Sony will go DRM free on music purchases.

Sony had a music store that they closed at the end of the good o'l MiniDisc player days. This doesn't surprise me too much though, with Microsoft basically trying to do the same thing with Zune and Xbox.
