Canonical bumps Ubuntu One paid accounts to 50GB, pulling even with Dropbox

Canonical has decided -- in response to user requests -- to give paid users of its Ubuntu One online sync and storage tool a big, fat boost in drive space. One recently made its way into Karmic Koala -- which has just reached beta.
When beta testing began in May, it looked as though free accounts would get 2GB (the same as Dropbox) and premium users would receive 10GB. That may have been a tough sell, since the same $10 per month scores 50GB from Dropbox.
In response to beta tester feedback, however, Canonical has decided to pony up. Paid users of the service will now get 50GB.
I'll still give the edge to Dropbox since it's also available on Windows, Mac, and now the iPhone as well. On top of that, there's also the option of a 100GB account if you need extra elbow room. If you're only using Linux, can make do with 50GB, and want to support Canonical, however, Ubuntu One is a solid choice.

Does Ubuntu One have any advantages over Dropbox? I don't understand why it's gotten as much attention as it has.

Hi Jonathan,
Dropbox is a great file sharing and syncing service. Ubuntu One is going to be more than file sharing and syncing. We're about to release some additional services which will allow users to share and sync other types of data like contacts, notes, and bookmarks. These new services are built on top of CouchDB, which we think developers of other applications will benefit from by having an easy way to provide sharing and syncing for their users. We've got some more services and features we'll roll out over time, but it's a little too early to talk about those just yet. :-)

I think it's an awesome service to be offering... but unfortunately any syncing service which isn't completely cross platform isn't really viable in my book. This isn't even a case where you can pick a god app on each OS, a sync app must run on all of them.

Sounds cool, now if only I can install Ubuntu on my laptop without having to edit some stupid config file just to get it to play sound through my external speakers, that would be very nice....
Why can't Linux "just work" (TM) like Mac OS or even Windows 7 does?

Apple only has to write drivers and make software for a limited amount of hardware, and Microsoft has overwhelming support from 3rd party hardware manufacturers. Very few hardware manufacturers actually write drivers for Linux due to it not widely in use on the desktop. So it's completely understandable that not everything "just works" with Ubuntu. However I think that creating a way for Canonical to generate revenue from Ubuntu will allow for them to have more devs work on making things "just work," which I think is exactly why they're offering Ubuntu One premium accounts. I personally think that its a great idea, and once I get my System 76 laptop I would be more than willing to support them by getting a premium Ubuntu One account :)

I wasn't aware that Windows (even 7) "just works". On all of my computers, I've had to track down drivers (on my ATI card, I actually had to edit a driver file to make it work correctly). I've been following Ubuntu releases for a while, and now I'm running Karmic Beta. This is the first release where EVERYTHING on my main notebook works perfectly OOTB.
