Google Voice now forwards SMS to email
Getting SMS by email has plenty of advantages. The biggest of these is that you can turn off SMS to your phone, so you're not paying for it, and read messages by email instead. You don't have to keep separate Voice and Gmail windows open to read text messages and email in your browser anymore, either. Also, you can file your texts in the same inbox as your Google Voice voicemail, so all of your incoming phone-related messages have one unified location. Finally, if you're using a threaded email client (like Gmail, as Google helpfully points out), your sms conversations will be threaded, too.

Here's an idea. Instead of having your MMS forwarded to email just have people send you an email!

I really don't understand the sarcasm. You obviously don't consider it important, but to me a workaround is not enough to switch.
GV is meant to be a replacement for your cell phone. Following that logic, you can also ask your friends to just send you an email instead of SMS. Obviously, it's useful otherwise Google wouldn't have implemented it.

Dammit, can Google just become an MNVO already? I want a cell phone with all these features built in, and without having to pay twice - once to my mobile operator, plus a monthly fee to Google for GV. For that matter, I want my cell phone to work in locations without a cell signal but with an open wifi connection, and to be able to make/receive calls on that same line from a home phone as well...in other words, VOIP over cell or wifi (or via home phone), with one number to manage, and without having to pay three different companies (Cell, VOIP, Google) for the service. Is that really too much to ask?

You're paying for speed. I've noticed that sms texts come to my email account anywhere from 2-5 minutes after I received the sms. Not very effective for the quick communication we come to expect with sms.
