Snarl: Growl-like notification system for Windows
Mac users love Growl, a global alert system that displays notifications from your favorite apps for various events (like a new email message or a completed download). Now Windows users can get in on the fun, with Snarl. While Snarl isn't a straight-up Growl clone, it provides a lot of the same features, like customizable notification styles.Snarl isn't completely new, but the last time Download Squad covered it (in 2007), it wasn't ready for the bigtime. The only notifications available were for iTunes and a clock app. Now it works on apps like Firefox, Pidgin, iTunes, and Windows Live Messenger. Some of the available notification styles are also quite nice, rivaling even Growl's selection.

Whilst Snarl is quite nice, last time I installed it, I had to also install some other application to support it which was somewhat annoying. Then I found out that most of the applications I want notifications, already had one built in.
In the end I removed it as a pop up to tell me it was 6pm was hardly useful.

Like Richard I'm a bit mystified. Is it coz I'm on Win 7 that I get just about all the pop up (actually fade-in) notifications that I want? All the Action Center stuff (updates, MSE updates) completed downloads (even utorrent downloads - I like that one) and a few others.
True, I don't get my gmail email has arrived stuff, but whenever I use a program to get that stuff I turn it off within a few days anyway.
Oh I like the way its implemented, quiet, looks good, fades away or turn it off or get options. One of the small things that Win7 have done very well.

The Gmail app is the only one I would use (Google's is a hog), but as neither Snarl nor the app themselves tell you how to get it to work I think I'll skip it.

I use the GMail Notifier (http://www.nexgenmedia.net/extensions/) plugin for Firefox. The downside is that you have to have Firefox running, but the upside is that it's free, it works with Google Apps hosted domains (unlike the official Google notifier) and isn't as resource intensive as running Google Talk. Even with Firefox minimised, you get a nice little notification pop up in the bottom right of your screen when a new email arrives.

What makes snarl different from growl for Windows ?
I got confused when I was thinking about installing notification system for my laptop. I would appreciate if someone point me out pros and cons for both software.

i use this, gmail growl, prowl the website and the iphone app to get closer to push for my iphone. it also save on the battery since i just hop into the email client on the iphone only when i get an update from prowl via growl on my pc. IT ROCKS!!
