Goodbye Entourage, Hello Outlook for Mac
Well, it was bound to happen! During a press call today, the Microsoft Business Unit announced that they are working on a version of Microsoft Outlook for Mac OS X. The news comes in tandem with Microsoft providing further details about the next major release of Office for Mac. Microsoft's Business Unit says the new application, which will replace Entourage when it is released in 2010, will contain a number of great features that will allow "increased productivity across platforms." Some of the highlights include:
- Built on Cocoa. The application is being constructed from the ground up on Cocoa to make integrating with Mac OS a lot easier.
- New Database. A high speed file-based database with support for backing up files with Time Machine and Spotlight searching.
- Information Rights Management. Helps prevent sensitive information from being distributed to or read by people who do not have permission.
With the release of OS X 10.6 right around the corner and promising native support for Exchange servers, it's funny to see Microsoft finally waking up and realizing they have got to do something to stay competitive.
So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

Microsoft probably made the announcement this far advance to perhaps soften the blow of Snow Leopard's built-in Exchange support. Sixteen months is a long time to wait for Outlook, but I can see most business users waiting to the goods from the mothership.

I'm concerned they will take the project center away, one of the primary reasons I use Entourage over other software.

Don't worry. They'll follow through.

Did you say "waking up and realize they have to do something"? What, you think MS just started working on this yesterday?
Why do bloggers and endusers alike fail to realize that people actually work on these things in the background without any fan-fare.

I'm sure this has been a project of Microsoft's for a while but given the timing of their announcement and it's proposed release date, I think that Apple's inclusion of Exchange support in Snow Leopard had to "light a fire" under them to a certain degree.

What crap!
After not being able to import my mails from Windows Outlook to Mac Entourage, and fetching all mails from the web, M$ introduces Outlook to Mac. I hope they have an option to import the Entourage mail database (and maybe merge it with my old Windows Outlook database).
