Timeline: operating system progress while GMail was in beta

Why not take a look at Wikipedia's operating systems timeline and see what changes happened in the world of desktop OSes over the same period. It sure seems like plenty has changed since 2004, so I headed over to TimeRime and starting putting things together.

Needless to say, I'm glad I decided against my original idea to look at 20 or 30 popular applications over the same five-year period.

Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. Gmail maybe the longest service to hold the beta tag (Guinness world record pending), but it is surely the perfect service on public release (now, after beta) with tons of great features like "multiple inboxes" and "Undo send".
