25 awesome Cross-platform games you can download for free - your picks!
FreeCol - Oh crap, I'm in trouble. As if I hadn't blown enough time over the years on the various Colonization/Civlization games. Explore new lands, build a nation, survive, and win! Thanks to wcroskeys for suggesting this one!

Warzone 2100 - Thanks to, er, John Doe for offering Warzone - a 3D RTS set in the future with a massive number of technologies (over 400) and units (more than 2,000). Multiplayer mode supports up to eight players.
Want more RTS action? Check out the list of games built on the Spring Engine, which feature themes like Star Wars, Gundam, and WWII (Spring: 1944). Thanks, Waldo!

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...

Don't forget Spring! http://springrts.com/
I guess technically its an engine, not a game. Here are some of the games that run on it:
Kernel Panic: http://www.moddb.com/games/kernel-panic
Spring 1944: http://www.moddb.com/games/spring-1944
Gundam RTS: www.moddb.com/games/gundam-rts

I'm addicted to Armagetron, it is an open source 3d Tron light cycle game. There are a lot of servers and a lot of different game types to play.

You should check out Daimonin. It's a MMORPG that's 100% free to play (they sell "donation" items on a web shop but the donation items are NOT required to play and some in-game items are better than the donation items). In addition to being free and cross-platform, it's also open-source. People can contribute to the game by coding, creating graphics, creating music, or making maps, in addition, of course, to providing comments and feedback in the forums.
Daimonin has a great community of players who are very helpful, especially to newbies, if the newbies ask for the help in /shout. A new version of the game (which is in continual beta for some reason) is slated for release within the next few months. Check in out: http://cli.gs/YNS9m2

Now, I know it's not as flashy as the other listed games, but how about an awesome game with tremendous staying power: Nethack!
http://www.nethack.org/
And it's been ported to more platforms than any other game listed here. ;]

Cave Story is quite awesome. It should be on this page even if the Mac and Linux ports are unofficial.
