25 awesome Cross-platform games you can download for free - pg 5
Warsow - Warsow's developer credit Quakeworld, Quake CPMA, Jet Set Radio, and Speedball for inspiring aspects of their game, and it's a combination that really works. The game's fast pace and cell-shaded graphics work well together. Other cool features: dual firing modes (weak and strong) for weapons, wall jump, ramp slides, dashing, and dodging.
Widelands - If you enjoyed playing the Settlers games and haven't tried Widelands yet, now's the time. Lead your tribe to glory in single-player mode, or go multiplayer on your LAN or over the Internet. You and your friends can unite to form glorious new empires - or just try to kick the snot out of each other.
Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory - Mein Leben! Ok, so that was from the old, old Wolfenstein. The idea is the same: shoot all the bad guys or they'll shoot you (or blow you up). The links will take you to Planet Wolfenstein where you'll find downloads for all three OSes, map editors, source code, and more.
Yo Frankie! - Built on the Blender Game Engine, Yo Frankie is as good a 3d platformer as you'll find for free. There's lots of lighthearted action to enjoy, and new levels are constantly being developed by an enthusiastic community.

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

This game isn't cross-platform, but it is free for Windows.
Fraxy is a top-down boss-destroyer type shooter. It includes like 50 bosses and then on top of that you can create your own. It's an amazing game, and making your own massive bad-ass bosses is unbelievably satisfying.

An open source Sid Meir's Colonization clone (although I am pretty sure it is not cross platform and only works on Win)

Can you guys please lemme know if there are any open-source or free Fighter games - somewhat of the genre of Soul Calibur or Virtua Fighter. Would be of great help!!

Try looking for Melty Blood if you like fighting games. IIRC its free, but mostly in Japanese - but it supports downloadable characters and levels, and such. You can have Homer Simpson fighting Megatron if you so desire, or Mario vs Master Cheif, or w/e.

I take it you didn't make it to the 'picks' page? ;)
I didn't include them on the original list because I figured they were the best known OSS FPS. Still, they're worth mentioning again, so they're on page 6!

Cave Story started off as a Windows-only game, but it's been ported to Mac (Intel *and* PowerPC) and Linux (Intel only), so it easily qualifies for this list. For those who haven't yet played it and enjoyed old-school NES action-adventure games, it is so worth the download...

Woo, Smokin' Guns! Probably my favorite free game of all time. Unfortunately Windows 7 and Intel screwed me with OpenGL support and I can't play it anymore... :(

I agree with Nigel Ng, zezke and keres - you're missing one very important game on this list, namely Urban Terror. The best free cross-platform game out there, imho. Nice that you included Wolfenstein Enemy Territory though, that easily comes 2nd. :)
