Microsoft: Vista to be available until 2011, officially

Microsoft responded quickly with the official word: they haven't decided yet when to pull the pin on Vista. According to internal policy, operating systems are made available until at least four years after their introduction. In Vista's case, that would put the earliest date at January 2011.
Historically, Microsoft has allowed about a six month licensing overlap when a new OS is released. Pulling Vista prior to that amount of time could be a colossally bad PR move, as it would no doubt be interpreted as yet another sign that even Microsoft didn't think Vista was all that hot.
As far as Windows updates are concerned, consumer editions will stop receiving "mainstream updates" after April 10, 2012 (you'll still get security patches). Here's another small slap in the face to anyone who ponied up for Vista Ultimate: that includes you, too. Vista Business - though much less expensive to license - will be fully supported for an additional five years.

What's crazy to me, is that of all of the complaints that I've been reading about Vista, it's run solid for me ever since it came out (or at least since I've had it). There was the slow file transfers issue that was fixed early on, but that's pretty much all I've ever had to deal with.

No Kidding. I've been running Vista Ultimate for 4 months now and I haven't had any crash or slowdown while running apps, it runs pretty smoothly.
In fact I really like Vista, of course Windows 7 looks pretty great.

Absolutely! I've found Vista to be a worthy upgrade to XP. I can never understand what people fuss about all the while whining about Vista.

I think it is rather low for MS to dump Vista users so quickly. Nothing like Vista being pushed under the bus, Microsoft.

I've had Vista since it's release on a laptop I own. Granted, I do no development/design work on that machine, but I've had no issues with using it as a typical user might and then some.
Other early adopters I think had problems with older hardware not working automatically; for instance, my inlaws purchased a computer (running Vista) that included a printer. The printer would not work for a while as no driver's existed for Vista for the printer despite the Vista ready label. So there was that misleading label that really tainted the OS in consumer's minds.
