Linux Foundation picks "We're Linux" video finalists
So the Linux Foundation decided to put together a video contest asking some of those enthusiasts to develop their own ads. The odds of any of these commercials showing up on prime time TV aren't great. But this week the Linux Foundation picked five finalists from more than 90 entries. Tomorrow the winner will be announced, but all five of the finalists are worth a look if you're interested in open source software development.
The video at the top of this post wins my vote for the funniest of the bunch. But I'm not sure it's the best at conveying what makes Linux special. You can find the other four entries after the break.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...

I personally liked the Freedom and Origins videos were the best. The other ones just don't really seem to be in the same breed of what really seems best as an ad in today's audience. However, I do think it would be good to put in some Compiz footage as a little hooker to show that Linux can be pretty like Vista/OS X if it wants to. Not saying that should be the only thing to be shown.

completley agree that the origins and freedom are the best, their exactly the type of thing you'd see on tv.
the rest try too hard but don't really get anywhere (especially the last one! which is terrible). i didn't laugh at the first either...
whats the difference between an apple and a window...nothing...
i dont get it! :-S

Yeah the problem with all but one of these is that they are just as deceptive as the Mac ads, hell only two of them even reference the fact that Linux is an os directly. All of these, from a marketing stand point are fail.

What do you know about marketing? All marketing proffessionals will tell that you have to advertise your trademark not the product itself. Best examples: Apple: people now tend to call all music players ipods; google: because of google influence "searching the web" turned into "googling".
BTW, "what does it mean" ad seems to be the best imho :)

So apple doesn't show its products in their ads? The never show anyone using a player, or any specifics about them? Man I guess I missed those.

I loove the third one. An the last one's second in my opinion. I'm not impressed with the first one mainly because it took an unnecessary dig at windows and mac in my opinion. Linux is more than just an anti-windows/anti-mac OS. I think the third one and the last one captured the essence of Linux better than the other 3.

Funny, none of them is better than the one released more than years ago, by professionals: the IBM Linux ad.

I think people are using cellphones to cook... pens to take a bath... the wrong people to create a good ad.

...Just like the Apple ads. I'd call it "keeping with the theme" ;)
