Microsoft releases Sharepoint Designer 2007 as a free download
The page states that Microsoft is "implementing a number of changes to promote and facilitate even more customization efforts on top of the SharePoint platform." One good way to do that is to get more developers to download and use Designer, and making it free should certainly help things along.
In general, the developer community is always slightly aloof when Microsoft announces they're releasing something for free. To ease minds, they put together a Q&A page to shed some light on the hows and whys of the Sharepoint change.
You'll need an MSN passport to sign in, but many of you either had one or created one so you could download the Windows 7 beta.

With Halloween fast approaching, it's a great time to get in some practice defending your territory against zombies. In Graveyard Shift, you take aim at zombies and other creepy-crawlies, blasting them into splatters of cartoony green guts. It's a casual first-person shooter, and it's very easy to get the hang of - use the mouse to aim, click to fire. Graveyard Shift has at least 15 levels, and it might even have some secret stages I haven't unlocked yet.
They key to getting good at Graveyard Shift is learning to use ...

What a relief, I was really worried about paying a few hundred bucks for this program to use in my $20k sharepoint server.

So bad they had to make it open-source. In my opinion they Website Design IDE's are dying. Really if you have to use an IDE then you really should be doing web designs.

since almost nobody is using Sharepoint, Microsoft is really open-sourcing a useless product...

They are making it free, not open sourcing it. There is a big difference.
Just cos something is free doesn't mean it is open source and vice versa, (although it is often the case, it isn't always).

It's not called MSN passport anymore I think. But Windows Live ID.

I see the trolls are out.
If you didn't know this is pretty much the same thing as MS Expression Web (for the moment until the newer version of EW comes out) which just happens to be one of the best web design packages around (and yes easily comparable to DreamWeaver).

Ugh, I think you forgot to link the "d" in "open sourced"

Still not interested. Not so many changes from the previous package "Front Page".

Uggg NOOOO! I have to work with this crappy software at work and now that it's free, my boss is going to find it all the more appealing. But Sharepoint is utter crap. Totally unconfigurable and just a plain mess. Server side and the designer. They HAD to make it free so more people will use it. I hope it backfires horribly and more people just notice how bad it is.
