Microsoft retail stores coming soon to a strip mall near you
Still, I can't help but wonder why Microsoft thinks operating its own stores will be more profitable than selling software downloads and getting physical copies of its software into existing retail outlets. Maybe this is really just a branding initiative, since that whole Seinfeld thing didn't really work out.

I'm betting you'll see little stations where a customer can punch in what they want/need in a computer and it will
A) make a reccomendation of select hardware from featured partners like HP and Dell available off the shelf
and
B) allow the customer to further explore all the possible models/configurations then allow them to custom configure one that can be ordered and shipped to them.
They can really focus their efforts on offering choice, and finding the right computer for everyone.
Add to that Xboxes, Zunes, mountains of software, and salespeople who can spin things just as well as Apple store employees (in the other direction) and you've got a winner

So, in other words, what the Apple store does.

no.....not like Apple
because Apple has an extremely limited product offering and push their "one-size fits all" philosophy. Microsoft can do well by emphasizing choice.

What choice? Whatever you pick, it will still crash within a couple years.
