Yahoo! Briefcase is finally being put out of its misery
Rather than upgrade the service with a slick new interface or additional storage, Yahoo! has decided to close its Briefcase. The company has posted a message alerting users that Yahoo! Briefcase will close on March 30th.
Yahoo! has posted an information page with instructions for downloading files from the service, but with only 30MB of storage available, I'm guessing most users (all two of them) won't have too many problems retrieving their data.

So as we await the fanfare that will result from the launch of the G-Drive, Yahoo closes their long abandoned trailblazer. I remember when this was launched; for a while there was a download offered that allowed you to integrate briefcase with Windows Explorer, offering a Y-Drive. Of course it wasn't updated to work beyond Windows 98 which is probably when the rot set in.
Back then their toolbar offered a unique online bookmarks service. Their (equally abandoned) notepad service allowed you to compose text documents online, offering the nearest to an online word processor available.
Google has since taken these concepts and done wonderful things with them. I'd like to think that Yahoo has been left to think what might have been, but closure of Briefcase suggests they still haven't rediscovered the innovate building blocks they abandoned ten years ago.
It's quite sad really; but well done Google for filling the vacuum.

Well remembered Kenny. The Y-drive was great. Just drag and drop. What an opportunity missed. I'm sure Google are putting together something similar that runs even more smoothly.

As lame as it was, it was still a very nice, no frills solution to having a few needed files handy when you were remoting into someone's PC doing support. As opposed to dancing on it's grave, how about some suggestions that allow you to store files without doing it through e-mail?

If you don't want to, look into these: Dropbox, Windows Live Skydrive, drop.io, box.net, Mediafire, SugarSync.

I hate Windows Live (not a Microsoft hater, just not a fan of all of their products). I'm also looking for something that I can log into on a client's PC and not have to worry about any security issues. As in, I don't want them caching a password that will allow them to send out e-mail under my name. That's why Drip.io fits the bill.

You make reference to other "gigabytes of free storage space," providers
but at least the 1TB one oosah is no longer providing:
"Uploading has been disabled to Oosah."
i think they run out of Disk-space or something, they had a very short life time anyhow

Crap. I used Briefcase all the time (before I got my flash drive) because unlike other online storage services, Yahoo didn't make you sift through three metric tons of crap and advertisements to find out how to download your files. Some places even make you wait 60 seconds for a countdown timer to let you download YOUR files.
And I can't imagine you would ever really need to upload those 200 GBs of pirated movies so you can access them at work! 30Mb is fine for pictures, presentations and some music.

I still can't figure out what "yahoo briefcase" is, so am still in the dark as to whether or not I will be affected by its existence one way or another. I can't download anything from their website. It just freezes up at forty four percent.
