Google's GDrive inches closer to becoming a reality

In the aforementioned javascript file ( which you can read here ), the Google crew offers two key insights about the enigmatic GDrive:
- GDrive will provide reliable online backup and storage of your files, including photos, music, and documents.
- Files will be accessible anywhere by using your desktop, a web browser, or a cell phone.

So, just how good at time waster games are you? Think you've got the stuff? Well, The World's Hardest Game 2.0 doesn't think you do.
Yes, amazingly, it's possible to have a sequel to a game called "The World's Hardest Game". It doesn't seem logically possible, since if the first one was actually the world's hardest, how could another one come along and share the moniker? It made me doubt the name in the first place. That is, until I tried the game.
The mechanics of the game are very simple. You are a small red square, ...

Too bad the upload speeds of ISPs in the UK sucks.
512k is average 768k is above average, 1Mb if you're lucky, 1.5Mb if you're luckier, and 2.5Mb if you're with Be/02 (and sacrifice some download for the privilege).
Virgin Media seriously think 1.5Mb upload on a 50Mb download service is acceptable...

Sounds good.... Especially if they offer "real" access to the files, say through SFTP. That would allow me to use whatever back up software I want...

Ah, the cloud. It's just the old client-server model, that's been around for decades now, repackaged and rebranded for the 21th century. What a have! ;)

I'm sure they won't let you store all files - just images (through Picasa), text documents and spreadsheets (google docs) and according to that script - music (which is a surprise, since letting users store mp3s is asking for trouble from the RIAA).
Some people seem to be expecting a g: drive that can be used for any files, just like a hard drive. That just won't happen. I'm looking forward to GDrive as a way to store my photos and make them accessable from more than one computer though!

GMX already has it, why not Google?

Perhaps Google doesn't feel a G: drive for generic storage is profitable. I don't know, but it sounds plausible to me. In any case, I'll be interested in whatever they do propose.

The Holy Grail for this sort of thing is (and has always been) finding a way to offer a product that would replace small and medium businesses back up plans. Allowing them to ditch tapes or usb drives or babysitting of BackupExec, etc etc.
There are plenty of consumer sites that do similar. Mozy et al. They have business offerings, and I know there are ways to DIY, but none of them hit the mark. I've tried almost all of them
If google can nail this market and integrate it with their google apps offering, I can't even imagine how big it would be.
