iConvert: web-based icon converter
Ever see an icon you like, but when you go to download it, you find out it's in the wrong format? You could copy and paste it into an image editor, and save it in the correct format, but some editors don't save .icns, .ico, or other popular icon types. iConvert does, though, and it's web-based. It also works with Windows, Mac and Linux-compatible formats.Just upload a file in any one of the numerous formats iConvert accepts, from .png to .tga. It will spit out download links for other formats, and you can just take the ones you need. I tried uploading a .ico file, and got links for .hqx, .icns, and 6 different sizes of png. So, don't despair the next time you find some great icons you don't think you can use: iConvert might be able to make them compatible with your system.

Interesting. I'd be even more impressed, actually, if it provided a means to actually build a proper icon file by submitting several appropriately-sized images (i.e. 512x512, 256x256, 128x128, 32x32, 16x16) via an upload form. That would eliminate the need to spend money on a third-party application to do it (or, in a Mac user's case, install several gigabytes' worth of developer tools to get at the 880KB Icon Composer app). For conversion, though, this sounds pretty neat.

This is an amazing service. When I was looking for creating a favicon for my site, I ended up using the service of iConvert. I am still to write about it though!

The backend to iConvert has the capability; I am currently working on designing the a simple UI for the advanced functionality you describe.

I'd love to, but it likely won't happen soon; the bandwidth costs would be extensive to make it a free service, to say nothing of potential copyright concerns.

Bradicon is an excellent service, but of little use to Mac users, who require icons in a format other than .ico
