If you know someone on your gift list is getting a camera or is a new shutterbug, you might want to consider getting them a "pro" photo sharing account where they can upload all their new photos. This is a nice gift for several reasons: 1. A pro account is a must have since most free accounts have a storage limit that the average photographer will easily exceed. 2. Zenfolio is also worth considering I believe. I chose Zenfolio last year after some research. I'm happy with it and renewed this year.

I am pretty happy with my Flickr Pro account, although I would obviously be interested in a free alternative if it had the same features and backing of a know and stable company.

I have a Flickr Pro that I am very happy with. I am going to look into this archiving of originals a little further. I didn't know you could do that.

I am in love with my Phanfare account. They almost lost me and many other customers when they tried to make it "social" by locking everything down and requiring people to essentially register and subscribe to your photos in order to view them. However, they tottaly won me back when they actually listened and added back the ability for completely open sharing. They have a completely unlimited Pro option, they support video up to 10 minutes and 2GB, they store multiple and full res versions, and the upload app is the best out there, and I tried them all, including the three above. They all have their pro's and con's, but for the money, I think you can't beat Phanfare.
